Hi, anybody been to Cayo Largo, Cuba? I am going end of
May. Any info/advice much appreciated. Also, what is the
air link to Havana like; cost, regularity etc.
Thanks.

I went to Cayo Largo in March - I went to learn to dive at
the Action Sport Dive Centre on PLaya Sirena - if you are
interested in diving I highly recommend it. The Island is
beautiful but it is a resort island - strictly for tourists
- the only Cubans there are the people who work there. The
only accommodation, I think, is in hotels which are all
inclusive. It is very much a package destination - don't go
looking for a real Cuban experience - I found paying so
much for a hotel a waste of money because I was away diving
each day, but it was just a part of my trip to Cuba and I
achieved my aim of getting my dive certificate. Getting to
the island - easy to get flights from HAvana I flew on a
little 12 seater plane - cost about $80. Have a good trip
I agree with the above post. It's a perfect place, perhaps
a little too perfect. It is very eerie that the only Cubans
on the island are the ones working in the tourist industry.
This is exactly what I expect North Korea to do if it ever
opens up any part of itself to outsiders. Everything runs
smoothly, from the calypso band that greeted our flight to
the yummy lobster buffet. It's a place for the spoiled rich
more than for those looking for Cuban adventures. Really,
there was nothing "Cuban" about the place. Just a lovely
island like many others...
If you want a better place to go, try Treasure Cay in the
bahamas. Its a great place and commie free.
Remember, people were murdered at the Hotel National last
year and the travel agencies coverd it up.
