I`ve been hearing alot of horror stories about Cuba (theft
at gunpoint, etc). I would really like to hear from people
who have gone there. We`ll be two girls backpacking. Also,
if anyone has specific info on how to get from Florida to
Cuba, it would really be appreciated. One last question, is
it possible to get from Cuba to Yucatan by boat or is it
necessary to fly? Any info would be really appreciated!!
Thanks!

I just returned from Cuba last month. I would not worry
about being robbed at gunpoint their as much as I would
worry about it here (U.S.). What I would worry about is
how to get to Cuba legally from Florida unless you are
licensed by the Dept. of Treasury.
I've been to Cuba 6 times - 5 times with another girl &
once alone. Never had any trouble. It's one of the safest
islands in the Caribbean. Relax & have a good time.
hola...traveled to cuba for 2 weeks alone and didn't have
any problems, except for the occcasional "hey italiano" by
the fellas on the street looking for the quick buck.have
some excellent recommendations on places to stay in both
havana and trinidad,casa particulars,as well as paladars..i
took a flight from cancun to havana, approx 265.00 rt via
aerocaribe..short flt approx 45 min...it's a beautiful
island and the people are incredible..i came away
entranced..try not to miss the cemeteries in both
cities..incredible...good luck,ciao...e
Susie, you can call Cuba Tours in Nassau (242) 325 0042 and
talk with Ken Collins, or call information for Havana Tours
in Nassau for schedule and flight information for your trip
to Havana Cuba. Cost should be $193 with Cuba Tours and $201
with Havana Tours.
You would most likely have to fly from Cuba to the Yucatan
penisula. I have read a lot about Cuba but have seen nothing
indicating that there is a ferry or boat service.
Some people had indicated that a ferry service was planned,
but those plans apparently fell through before getting off
the ground.
Good luck.
I have a very good friend who works at the port for ship in
old Habana. Lately, there have been many ships coming to
Cuba, but they tend to be the larger cruise ships. Smaller,
private ships generally go into Marina Hemingway. In order
to get on one of those, you are going to have to find
someone with a private yacht who is going that way.
Otherwise, your best bet is flying.
Cuba is the safest place to go in the Caribean and probably
South America.
I have been 6 times since Dec 1994 and the last 2 trips in
legal Casa Particular.
Was never stolen and no one even tried.
Normal precaution is required on beaches where you do not
bring your jewels etc...
You'll probably hear Jesse Helmes advocating Castro's kind
on government before a Cuban in Cuba actually robs someone
at gunpoint. Guns among Cuban citizens is not the norm
there as it is in the U.S.
Was it Jesse Helmes that told you this story about being
people being held up by gunpoint?

No, you wont be robbed or assaulted in Cuba, remeber not
everywhere is like Anytown USA, I┤d be mores stressed in any
american high shool than in cuba. When I think of this I ask
to myself if what US want to export to Cuba after Fidel is
just that ? Violence, Drugs, Vice, Hate.........
Hi there,
my family and I spent two weeks in varadero three years ago and found the people very warm and receptive to tourists. You have to remember that you are in a country that has been deprived of alot of things that we take for granted. It could be a culture shock for some.Having said that, we did not find any trouble whatsoever. The Police in Cuba run a zero tolerance on all offences, Which in turn leads to a very well behaved people.Obviously dont put yourself in any posistion that you might think is a bit dodgy, but then again its plain common sense isnt it.
If they still run the sea safarie I would reccommend that you take a trip on it, I promise you wont be dissapointed. You get a whole day on a yaught sailing the coast, all food and drink is included as well as snorkling off a reef, and dolphin watching.
Oh yes dont lose your tourist card, they wont let you leave Cuba unless you have it.
See ya. and have fun.
Safe in Cuba, are you kidding, if a cuban robs you the
sentence in life in prison, If he has a weapon (armed
robbery) the sentence in death. How's that!
It's a very safe place...
