non-resorty trip?

I'm looking to go somewhere in the Caribbean for about a
week between May and September, but I DON'T want a resort-
catered atmosphere like I hear most of the islands down
there have become. I really need great hiking, preferrably
mountainous, and snorkeling. Lotsa biodiversity, too.
Friendly locals and a laid-back atmosphere. I'm 25, so
a "young" feel would be good. I'd most likely be traveling
alone. Any ideas? I was thinking about Grenada. I don't
want someplace too crowded -- if that's possible down
there. Thanks in advance for the tips!

  1. Grenada a possibility Added by: Dan

    Hi,
Grenada might fit your bill, but I'd double check the
expected weather when you narrow down your travel times.
With the exception of St. George, I doubt that you'd feel
crouded in Grenada. If you want further isolation,
Carriacoa is an option. I enjoyed Grenada for the beaches,
did some scuba while there (B-), liked the people, and did
some exploring. A caution: I didn't find the island
particularly inexpensive (ie car rental is high, but worth
it). Do some research and give it a shot. Try

  2. Try Andros in the Bahamas Added by: Ted Eliason (ted_eliason@mail.amsinc.com)

I just got back from a week on South Andros island in the
Bahamas. While this is not technically the carribean, it
was definately miles from any mob tourist resort. If you do
it right, you can hop to Nassau from Ft. Lauderdale for $160
RT, and take the mail boat to South Andros for $35 each way
without having to Stay in Nassau for a single night. Great
snorkeling in the South Bight of the Island. Gibbon
McKenzie, a local guide took us on a hike into the interior
of the island complete with herons, bat caves, etc.
Barring this, there's always camping in St. John national
    park, USVI.

    St. Vincent,
I lived on this island for four months from May to September
I never saw very many tourists, accept for expats. You can
hike in an inactive volcano. Many different lush vegitation
the lonely planet doesn't say very much about this little
island. I stayed with a host family, but there are many
cheap hotels. Many islands to visit as well. There Mardi
Gras festival happens in July and is fabulous! Small but a
good show. If you do happen to visit this quaint island
Charlottes Fort is a nice site as well. Stop in at Radio
705 and say hi to the D.J. Colin and receptionist Jasmine
    from Nicole the Crossroader.

Lots of cheap places to stay, friendly locals, great
inexpensive food, amazing snorkelling, big festival in
July. Email me for more info - been there 4 times and have
    tons of contacts. Deb.
