And another thing..

Does anyone in Cuba ever say "Thank you?" I seriously doubt
it. I can not site ONE instance in which a person thanked
me. Maybe I use the word too loosely, the Cubans on the
other hand dont use it at all. This isnt a knock, just an
impression I got. Comments???????

just accept this as a cultural difference. there aren't a
lot of, compared with cultures like India, but keep your
eyes open, don't get angry, just accept. you're in an other
    cultur, as a guest.

I don't know where or what kind of people you met during
your stay but my experiences were very very different than
yours! On the occasions that I gave people things, I was
always thanked...gracias! Nor was I asked for things nor
hinted at for things...perhaps you ought to have tried the
    eastern side of the island!

I made the same experience as golden sunshine. Eveybody
thanked me heartfully for receiving clothes, for getting a
ride in the car etc. I only met smiling people all over
    Cuba.

I have learned that cubans with family or very close
    friends don't say thankyou...
When a good friend would arrange something and I thanked
them they would always say "Why are you thanking me"?

I agree with Renate, Cubans are generally very polite, well
educated and certainly do give thanks for car rides,
clothing, chickle, tips, whatever, Maybe it depends on the
    attitude of the donor?
