Does anyone know about flights between Montreal and Habana?
If so, would you please give me phone numbers (for travel
agents), estimated costs, and whatever details you think
useful. I just found out that I can travel between New York
and Montreal via Amtrak for $118 roundtrip! Now, I just
have to get to Cuba. Thanks in advance!!!!

  1. NYC to HAVANA Added by: kevinNYC (kjenkins@darbylaw.com)
[Timestamp: Thu 6 May, 0:15 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    Try Nash travel at http://www.nashtravel.com/cubahome.html
Also, how long does the train take from NYC to Montreal. I
too am planning to fly to Havana soon from NYC and need to
get either to Montreal or Cancun. I wonder if it isn't
worth spending the extra dollars to fly to cancun and then
to havana. The train trip to Montreal must be very long,
no? When are you going? I may go this month or in August.
You can email directly if you want. Thanks

Yeah, I was thinking of going through Mexico too. However,
the flights were running around the $400 range to Mexico
City/Cancun. (I guess it's those summer travelers.) The
train ride is approx. 9 hours, but I figured it might be
relaxing, or scenic at the very least. I thought it might
also be easier going through customs between the U.S. and
Canada. Additionally, I've just found traveling by air a
little stressful after a while. Buying the tickets is a
pain in the "you know what" and rushing around the airport,
trying to find your connecting flight can become a little
daunting. Instead of trekking out to LaGuardia, JFK, or
Newark, I kind of like the idea of taking the subway down to
Penn Station, getting on the train, and waking up in
Montreal - for $118. What do you think?
    -
Incidentally, flights between NY and Montreal are running
around $200-$220. That's a lot better than the prices to
Mexico - although you would paying more for the flight from
Montreal to Cuba. It's really 6 of one, half a dozen or
another. I just think that taking the train would save
money, reduce stress, and be a little more interesting than
    flying.

  3. Good idea actually Added by: kevinNYC (kjenkins@darbylaw.com)
[Timestamp: Thu 6 May, 4:00 Tasmanian Standard Time]

True, just going to Penn Station sounds much more appealing
than traveling to the airport, which is half the battle in
NYC. Plus you'll save taxi fare. Is the train an
overnighter? That would be cool actually. Let me know what
Nash says for flights to Havana. Actually, Ihave them
working on a package for me right now, flights & hotel in
Cuba. It really is muchcheaper that way. Of course if you
want to stay in a casa particular that is even cheaper. But
you can always book the package for just a few nights and
then decide if you want to stay in the hotel or go to a casa
    particular.

Thanks for the heads up! They are working on prices for me.
However, I found out an interesting tid-bit of information.
Apparently, the airport in Montreal is approx. 50 miles
outside the city - and there is no easy way to get there.
The guy @ Nash suggested maybe Toronto, since there are
shuttles between the airport and the city. But since I've
been to Toronto already, I thought Montreal would be more
interesting. Anyway, I'm investigating how to maneuver
through Montreal. Hopefully it is still do-able. I'll keep
    you posted. Thanks again!

  5. Another way Added by: Hans (stardustnyc@yahoo.com)
[Timestamp: Thu 6 May, 5:22 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Why not Toronto? Your ultimate goal is Cuba so when travelinging thru NAmerica it really matters little in the ways of sight. I travel last Dec from NYC to Toronto by Greyhound, ride is long but slept most of the way(as you probably will on Amtrek) Cost ~$90usd
I'll be on my way for 3 weeks this july and will appreciated if you can give me a heads up on what's going on there. If the atmosphere hadn't subside by then maybe it's not too late to change course.
BTW, I'm not the package looking to be fed the can version of Fidel's travel plan. Any insight in outter province is grateful.

  7. Thanks for the offer Added by: Diago
[Timestamp: Thu 6 May, 23:43 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Perhaps you could help. I haven't really considered Nassau
this time, only because I've gone through there 4 times
already. As much traveling as I'm doing, I would like to
see some places besides just Cuba and the airport in Nassau.
That's actually why I traveled through Costa Rica, Panama,
and Bogota on my last trip to Cuba. At this point, I'm no
longer going to Cuba as a tourist, rather with a distinct
purpose. Consequently, the novelty with Cuba has worn off
and I'm trying to find different routes in order to keep
these trips interesting. The price from Montreal is about
$500 (CDN), which works out favorably for me - with the
exchange rate. The flights between Nassau and Habana are
$208 roundtrip. If I could get a good rate to the Bahamas,
perhaps I would consider trying it again. However, I've
found that buying airline tickets during the summer months
can be a pain! That's why I thought a simple train ride to
Canada might make this trip a lot easier. Cancun might not
be too bad, but the prices are approaching $400 to Cancun.
If I were to travel that way, I might end up spending around
$700, as opposed to $500+- if I took the train to Canada.
And while $200 might not break me, I could definitely do a
lot with that in Cuba. I'll check the prices again to
Nassau, it's just not my first choice. As the travel expert,
    what are your thoughts?

  8. try toronto Added by: mikey (m_silk@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Fri 7 May, 14:13 Tasmanian Standard Time]

getting to toronto from NY is a bit farther but i think there are way more flights to cuba available on offer. try sunholidays.ca -- the 'book online' section and also the 'last minute specials' AND the link to signature vacations' site. even in the off-season there are flights to varadero, holguin and ciego de avila, total including taxes less than cad500=usd340. canada3000.com is also good for charter flights but there doesn't seem to be any cuba in summer.

  9. Thanks for all the great help! Added by: Diago

Mikey, Sun Holidays was pretty cool! They have a flight to
Habana from Toronto on the July 3 for $450 (CDN) - taxes
included. I have been somewhat resistant to going to
Toronto, since I've been before. (Also, the train ride is
12 hours to Toronto rather than the 9 hours to Montreal)
But I may have to go for it! Thanks once again. If anyone
else has advice on traveling from Toronto or Montreal,
    please let me know.

Check into Mexico City Cubana consolidators...
I flew round trip mexico city-havana in feb for $280USD,
including taxes and Cuban Visa. Cubana quoted me something
like $430 for the same ticket! The Cancun RT Is even
    cheaper I think.
The guy I dealt with was Named Roberto Mongana, He usually
advertises his small agency, Sybony Tours, in Tiempo Libre
magazine which is widely available in Mex. City. I have his
phone # somewhere if anyone's interested.

When you guys finally figure out the cheaptest way to get
to Cuba please let me know! I want to go to Cuba or some
other carribiean spanish speaking country this summer.
Being on a tight budget, money is a big factor for me.
I'll be flying into Philadelphia from Taipei, Taiwan via
L.A. and New York so my gate cities to the spanish speaking
    world are many. Gracias!

you'll have to do a bit of your own research, but the above point you in a few good directions. starting in NY or PHL you're within a day's drive/bus/train of toronto where fares to cuba (or dominican rep if you prefer) are about 400cad (1usd=1.45cad). by the sound of it the price is very similar from mexico city and may be less from cancun. but what would it cost you to get to mexico from where you are?
your willingness to pay the difference depends on whether you have an interest in going there anyway (or to canada for that matter) as part of the adventure.
. the tone of your post suggests we should all sort out who's 'right' while you snooze under the nearest palm tree. i'm giving benefit of the doubt; maybe i misunderstand.

Your 100% right I am just a free loader! But I have no
other alternative. I have gone to a number of travel
agencies here in Taiwan and half of them think Cuba is
located in South America while the remainder never heard of
Santo Domingo. So I am now counting on all the good
samaritins, out there, to help me find the cheapest way to
get to Cuba, Santo Domingo or Ecuador either from L.A., N.Y.
    or Phil. Thanks!
P.S. If anyone has any plans on coming to Taiwan let me
know and I'll help them in what ever way possible.

  15. Getting there is easy! Added by: Diago
[Timestamp: Mon 10 May, 23:24 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Going to any of these spanish-speaking countries is easy
through the U.S., except Cuba. Unless you are preparing to
go to Cuba, you can get to Santo Domingo very easily from
Miami, Los Angeles, or New York. Same goes with Ecuador.
The only reason you would go to Canada is if you are
planning on visiting Cuba. Perhaps you should first figure
out where it is you want to go, create an intinerary, and
see what your costs are. If you are looking for cheap
flights into South/Central America, I would suggest calling
either Olga, Deborah, or Henry (although he can be a little
    testy) @ Ole Travel - (650) 559-5192. They are
consolidators, specializing in Latin America. Someone on
the thorn tree referred me to them and they gave me
    unbelievable prices. Good luck!

[Timestamp: Tue 11 May, 0:10 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Thanks for the information. Two other questions: What do
you mean by "they are a little testy"? And do these
    agencies have 1-800 numbers. Gracias!

  17. Steve... Added by: Diago
[Timestamp: Tue 11 May, 4:12 Tasmanian Standard Time]

..."a little testy" means that Henry is a pain in the ass,
but he gets good prices. As for the 800 number, they don't
work outside of the U.S. Aren't you in Taiwan?

  18. Diago Added by: Steve
[Timestamp: Wed 12 May, 21:47 Tasmanian Standard Time]

That's what I thought it meant. Yes, I am in Taiwan but
the 1-800 numbers do work outside of the U.S.A. You have to
dial two or three other sets of numbers first in order to
    get the 1-800 conection.

  19. Travel.......cont'd Added by: Diago
[Timestamp: Thu 13 May, 0:42 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    O.k., just dial.....800-559-5192. Once again, I've almost
always used Henry, but he gets on your nerves quick! Both
Olga and Deborah should be able to help you out.
    -
As for my plans to travel through Montreal, they are looking
pretty good! Mikey, thanks for the SunHolidays hook up!
They can get me from Montreal to Habana for $476 (CDN),
which translates into $316 (USD). That works out
beautifully - $118 (USD) to Montreal via Amtrak, then $316
(USD) to Cuba! That would be the least I've ever spent to
    travel to Cuba.

  20. Diago Added by: Steve
[Timestamp: Thu 13 May, 18:13 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Thanks! It looks as though I may be going to Ecuador. It
seems that a trip to Cuba for me and my chinese lady friend
involves too many headaches. Have a nice time there in Cuba!

  21. FROM TORONTO OR MONTREAL Added by: FROM CANADA TO CUBA (gatienj@cancom.net)
[Timestamp: Fri 14 May, 12:00 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Nash Travel (Ontario)quoted me $ 540 CDN flight for Habana
and return in 15 days.( Montreal-Habana)
I was quoted $499 CDN for 14 days from other Travel Agent
    in Montreal.
From Dorval Airport To Mirabel (where you board Cubana),a
shuttle will charge less than $24 CDN (rate of Downton
    Montreal)to go and back.
I honestly think that the differences in price from one to
the other will depends on if you want to spend 14 or 15 days
in Cuba. as well as the hour you want to arrive there and
the same as your way back.
Personnaly trying Nash this June and may come back to
Montreal Agencies in August and October.
The only differences I haave found is Nash do not seem to
provide you whith a reference In Cuba if you have any
problems while many agencies in Montreal, will refer you to
Mrs Caroline Limoges,on place for now more than 8 years.
The difference between a dry thicket sold in Ontario and one
    sold in Montreal
