We┤re going to London this summer with two kids (8 and 9 years).
Do you have any suggestions for a place to stay, not too expensive). Apartment or a nice B+B, rather centralish or in a nice suburb.

We have a 7 year-old, active boy. He enjoys adventures. We
hope to use Estramadura as a base for looking about Portugal
. Any suggestions for reasonable cost accomodation for up to
4 weeks,mid-July to mid-August,will be gratefully accepted.
We have searched the Web (though not especially
thoroughly ) and of course looked at our Lonely Planet
Guide. The Web sites post rather expensive 'Manor-House'
residences quoted in English currency. Local contacts
probably will be better. Any suggestions?
Also, can anyone suggest activities that would give our boy
the chance to meet with other children. We have no
Portuguese at present, but from other experiences elsewhere
do not feel that that will be a major problem. Thanks,
Michael.

We have a 2 month old baby and are travelling to Bangkok

place?) but just want to ask for any tips on where to take the
baby for easy, interesting days out and any special
precautions we should take.
Thanks

We are planning several weeks in Singapore and Malaysia
with our son who will be 6/7 months old when we travel. My
main concern is about availability of disposable nappies
and food. He will be mainly breastfed but will be on solids
as well by then. Is commercial baby food available and
suitable? Any advice appreciated!

it out for a child's perspective.
My non-commercial website also has details on how we lots of
side trips on our 4 month independant trip, but also lots of
other info, tips, advice, our itinerary, important health
info, lots of photos, details of all our hotels plus heaps
more at

Looking for suggestions for a good place to take a one year
old for a week or two in Queensland. My husband and I have
frequent flyer points that we need to use so would need to
be somewhere that Qantas flies to. We like snorkelling and
rainforests. We are also interested in quiet,
friendly accommodation - not too budget but probably not
resort-priced either.
.
Btw, we live in Sydney but have lived and travelled all over
NSW, ACT and Vic and are happy to provide info to anyone
travelling in those areas.

I am planning a family trip to last six months. This trip will take place in 2003. My family includes, wife and three children. My kids will be 14, 12 and 7. I would like to start invistigating places-to-go now. We would like to go somewhere french speaking, although we are open to all suggestions. Somewhere similar to, say, Goa would be nice. I've been to India twice and would perfer to go to some other country this time. Money is a factor, so somewhere cheap. I welcome e-mails with suggestions.

We would like to make a cycling-trip in oktober/november
together with our two daughters Aranka (in oktober almost
3) and Emese (in oktober 8 month). When Aranka was 6 month
we cycled with her in Europe and when she was 10 month in
Turkey (trekking, camping and staying in small pensions).
Especially Turkey was excellent: the contact with the local
people (and also women) was very good. Several times we
were invited in the family-houses when we were on the road.
Later we cycled and camped one month in the Baltic States
(Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). With one girl we can cycle
60-80 km a day.
In oktober we're thinking to go to an other "interesting"
country. Not too hot (max 23C, not too wet (no rain), not
too heavy cycling (some hills are OK), a little traffic,
and with basic facilities for food, water and health and
easy to reach.
Which places do you recommend?
Please mail us: nkuper.jwvandalen@gironet.nl
Contact us also if you want more information of us about
cycling with a baby/kid.

writting. I'm doing this web page called " Born to be a

I can to let me have their stories to publish on my web

Please send and kind of story, it can be true, fanticy,

I'm a single parent with a 13 year old daughter and am looking for an all-inclusive (or other sugggestions) vacation spot geared to both of us. I want to relax. She wants to hang around other teens. I want the "hanging around" to be somewhat supervised. We've done cruises and those were ok, but I'm looking for other suggestions for this summer.

We are arriving in Cancun 7/1 and will be there 9 nights.
I do not want to stay at large resort-y places or gringo
meccas or partyvilles (no Cancun , Isla Mujeres, Cozumel,
or Playa del Carmen).
What beach towns can we stay at that are safe, quiet, super-
cheap (lodging under $45 a night for my kidder and me),
have tranquil surf and easily accessible by bus or
collectivo? We are not gonna rent a car and I do speak a
little Spanish.
I'd appreciate any suggestions for good cheap beaches,
accomodations, transportation, etc.
So far, I am most interested in Tulum, but am also
considering Tankah... I think Akumal is too "yuppy" for
us. Xpuha sounded absolutely perfect until I heard they
are building 2 huge resorts there (ugggggh!).
I do not mind staying in cabanas or having to share a
bathroom or a kitchen or cooking area- just want our
sleeping quarters to be super-quiet, private and safe.
Also we are TERRIFIED of bugs! I do like the cute lil
lizards, though!
thanks!

I spent four years backpacking around the globe and I must
have had blinders on because I truly don't recall seeing
many, if any, travellers with kids...not in any of the
hostels, backpackers, campgrounds, etc. Granted, most of
my time was in out of the way places in Third World
countries, but still, should've seen some kids. At any
rate, I'm now a single parent of a 2-1/2 year old and would
love to do some travelling with him. Can you other
travellers suggest interesting places where parents/kids
tend to congregate (please, not the Disneyland crowd
though). I'm most interested in hiking, beaches and
natural beauty (e.g. waterfalls, mountains, oceans, etc).
Also, would be interested to know if anyone is aware of a
site where single parent travellers might hook up to plan
some tandem travelling together (with their wee ones, of
course). Thanks.

We are in the early stages of planning a one year trip with
our two children who will be 5 and 3 when we leave.
Current plans are to leave around May 2000. We would like
to "live" in about 12 (or fewer places) and find fully
furnished places with kitchens. We are very still very
flexible about destinations and would like suggestions on
places that people have really enjoyed with young children
on extended vacations. We would like to find smaller towns
and establish contacts with people in some of the places
before we go. We live in the U.S. and have travelled in
Canada and Mexico and before kids we lived in Italy and
Germany. We're looking for new adventures so info on the
rest of the big world would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello!!
We are about to have a baby pretty soon, and we would
like to go away with it for a month or two when the
child will be between 6-12 mnds. Previously we have
been to quite a few tropical islands in the
Phillippines, Indonesia, Seychelles and the Maldives,
which have mostly been great. The problem with these
places are that they are either too desolate to bring
such a small kid or too expensive for a let us say 6
to 8 week stay. Places we were thinking of are KOH
LANTA and KRABI in Thailand, ( We have never been to
the thai islands- just stopovers in Bankok). LOMBOK
and GILLIES (Here we have been many years ago, but not
with a child) and PERHENTIANS and TIOMAN in
E-Malaysia. Can you bring such a small child to these
places?????? What we need is bungalow on the beach
with A/C and no malaria problems!!! All related info
are welcome!!! Thank you!!!! Bjorn

On June 13th we leave Sweden to spend about six weeks in
Japan, Australia and Singapore. We are going to spend most
of the time in Australia and we've planned this tour:
Melbourne - Uluru - Kings Canyon - Alice Springs - Darwin -
Kakadu NP - Katherine - Cairns and drive down to Brisbane
(camper van probably) - Sydney - Melbourne. Our girls are 5
and 7 and we would love some ideas on how to see things
away from the tourist track suitable for children, although
there are lots of "have to see-things" we don't want to
miss also. Also would like some ideas on how to prepare the
girls for the trip.

I am a white male aged 47 (large but a bit tubby). I and my boyfriend (soon to be husband)
want to travel with our kids (one adopted child aged 7, from Uzbekistan, one adopted chinese
(actually from Szechuan) aged 4) through the deep south of the USA by bicycle (and maybe hitch hike).
We are concerned about narrow-minded views
spoiling our trip and my boyfriend suggested that he dress up as a woman to make us look
like a traditional southern couple. I think this is kinda dumb. The kids wanted to go to
Disneyland but we thought riding our bikes up dirt roads in the southern apalachians would be
a great way to see the real America (he thinks he can ride his Schwinn in a dress, though)
Do you readers have any advise, especially travelling with our kids

Hello!!!
I am a 29 year old Canadian woman desperate for advice!!!
The travel bug bit and I spent the summer of 1998 teaching
English in Cairo, Egypt. I wish to return by July of 1999
to spend six months to a year in Egypt. This time, I will
be bringing my 9 year old son with me.
As a single mom who will be bringing in a modest income
(1500 Egyptian pounds per month), I am having a difficult
time finding a school taught in English for my son to
attend. Most schools range from $8000 to $13000 American
per year. This is an impossibility for me!!!
I don't know what other options may exist, but am anxious to
find out. If you have any advice to offer, or perhaps you
are an expatriate currently living in Cairo, I would
appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks to all!!!

We have a new web site at www.undergroundtravel.com and

The site is aimed at travelers who would rather spend a

We are looking for video and stories relating to "life on

I have a 3 year old daughter and would like to take her

anyone has travelled to Australia with kids, from Canada or

Some of you may know, some not: here it is:
The museum PAPALOTE (Aztec: butterfly) in Mexico City is a
great place for children to bring. From the age of 2 (our
daughter was 2 when we got there and she loved it) to 22
there are loads of wonderful things to experience: physical
wonders like laser (safe, anyway), gravity and light,
paintings, and many more very interesting things to do. Of
course, a very large toboggan indoors and a huge McD.
outdoors will make heaven complete for children of any age.
I do not have the adress right now but I will add it later,
or just send me a mail.

Of all the sites on tt this one has the least traffic. I travel with two girls, its the best gift I can give. I'm hoping to teach them to think on their feet, think for themselves, not
to be afraid and above all self confidence. What better gift
can you give a child. We are using travel as education.
I hope this is teaching them to be tolarant & understanding
of other cultures and respectful. We have met incredible
people and been to wild places, push those comfort zones.
Most cultures embrace children so buy the tickets and go.
Our 14 year old earns the money for her ticket and we
decide where we can afford to go, joint decision.
My husband won't go with us but he is very supportive
and always picks us up at the airport. He sees the benefits
that backpacking has had on the girls. Anyway hope to see you all out on the road. Happy Trails!!

Hi, my best friend and I (two single mums) are heading of with out 3 kids 9 - 11 in July next year. We have our schedule basically planned, (we found a good 7 day safari with Roys Safaris and 4 days in Zanzibar including airfares and accomodation for $1295 p.p adult and 800p.p child) We are looking for some good cheap accomodation for 1 night in Nairobi, 1 night in Arusha and 1 night in Dar es Salaam, we don't care if it is a bit rustic (max $25 p.p/night) also so looking for decent accomodation in Avignon, Turin, Rome (near pantheon), Lyon, Dijon, Chamonix and Paris (is 13 days enough to drive from Rome to Paris excluding stays in those two places. Also does anyone know a way to do Disneyworld cheap (accomodation wise). And can anyone recommend a good reasonable baby sitting service in San Francisco, New York and New Orleans.
Like I said, just the little things. If anyone would like any detail of the safari, feel free to email me.

We'd like to take our two little girls to Mexico one of
these years and are thinking about suitable destinations.
.
We've travelled a good bit in Mexico but are not quite
adventurous enough to subject small children to the rough
style that characterized most of our trips. Neither are we
interested in a completely sanitized, Cancun-style gringo
experience. So we're looking for an experience that's
safe, reasonably comfortable but not necessarily luxurious,
and very Mexican.
.
Aside from the fun and general educational benefit of
travel to Mexico, I'm particularly interested in language
exposure. We speak a bit of Spanish around the house and
they have friends from Spanish-speaking families but none
of that has "clicked" yet for our girls. I'm hoping that
hearing Spanish used in a more natural setting may spark
their interest in the language.
.
A couple of thoughts have occurred to me:
.
(1) Anybody known of a nice resort frequented by
middle-class Mexican families? Maybe just a hotel with a
pool, a bit of garden and some playground equipment where
the kids are likely to find playmates their own age.
Ideally it would be in a place with some scenic or
historical interest to us grownups as well.
.
(2) When the kids are older, I've wondered about
family-oriented service trips. Maybe painting a school,
planting trees, or something of that sort. I know a lot of
such trips are sponsored by church groups, but we're not
from a Christian background so we'd need something that was
tolerant of non-Christian participants. And again, a
program that involved Mexican families would be preferable
to one that just consisted of norteamericanos.
.
Any suggestions along those lines? Or other ideas?
Thanks.
.
[And yes, I see the older threads on this topic further down
the Thorn Tree; forgive the redundancy.]

other sunny country for that matter) for 4-6 months at
reasonable price. Leaving our exclusive apartment for rent
during same time, at the gate of the land of the midnight
sun and the northern lights. (Lulea, Lapland, Sweden). Send
a mail if you are interested or may help us in our planning.

Hi,
I am a single mother traveling to Scotland this summer with my two children (ages 9 and 12). Was wondering how local culture tends to deal with single parents (especially when looking for accomadations, etc.). Also, I have not been able to find a lot of ready material dealing with travel with children (especially those that are the age of my own). I would also like to find something interesting for them to read to familiarize them with the country.
I am also thinking of renting a car (but don't have a credit card) or buying. Any advice?

We are planning a 3 week sojourn into the Middle East (Egypt, Israel and Jordan) this year with Zach a vibrant, curious and excitable 17 month old and arelooking for advice and tips from people who have done this part of the world before. We did a successful 3 week trip to Zimbabwe and South Africa last year so found out some handy hints ourselves - can give advice in this respect but would like to hear about pitfalls and triumphs in the Middle east. Cheers

Hi everybody
Thanks for the messages to my first query.
I've narrowed down the choice to:
Madden Mountaineering (Caravan)
Kelty (Explorer)
MacPac (Possum)
Yet, it's impossible to find ANY child carriers here in
Japan so I'd have to order them thru the net. Before I do
that, however, I'd like to hear from people who've been
using the above and about their experiences (pro / con),
etc.
Thank you so much

I am planning on taking my 4 children overseas for about 7
months this year. Unfortunately, my children are subject to
a Family Court Order after the break up of my marriage.
Originally my ex agreed to me taking our children overseas
but now he has refused to sign the passport applications.
So now I have to get a court order to allow me to take my
children out of Australia.
Has anyone else been through this hoop and can advise me on
how best to convince the court that my children should be
allowed to travel overseas.

We are traveling round Rajasthan during the month of

precautions about the water, food and higiene, we
would welcome any suggestions about reasonably priced

(a break from architecture and handcrafts) and about
clothing both for sun/dust protection (she's quite
fair skinned) and for morality (would jeans cause
problems?) Thanks, Sleepy

Does anyone know anything about how safe (or not safe) long haul flights are during early pregnancy. I'd like to go to London (and back) mid year, which is about 22 flight each way, but if all goes to plan I may be pregnant by then (first trimester) and am concerned about any risks to pregnancy such a long flight may involve (eg. increased risk of miscarriage). Does anyone have any info about this, or any tips for making a long flight more safe/comfortable during pregnancy?

Can anyone help? We are going to East Africa with a four year old and 16-month old, and I have been given such conflicting advice on Lariam that my head is spinning. I don't want to harm my children with the tablets, but obviously I don't want them to get malaria either!
Is Lariam safe for a 16 month old? The leaflet in the packe t says not for children under 14, my doctor said give her a quarter tablet, and the cdc says give her half of that! What have other people heard/done?
I feel a bit safer about the 4 year-old, but just to be on the safe side, what has anyone else heard/done?
I'm not so worried about the famous psychological side-effects as permanent damage that the tablets might have on a small infant.
Please help!!

We'll be stuck at the airport in Moscow for 10 hours. I'd

Also: ideas for games to play, things to do and snacks to

Will be visiting Washington D.C. this summer for about 4 nights, along with my two sons, ages 10 and 14. Have heard positive things about staying in the city, but also have heard from others who claim it is a much easier experience if you stay in Arlington or surrounding cities and take the Metro into DC each day. I would love to hear from anyone who has been there with kids and has an opinion on this. Also, any recommendations for kid friendly places to stay would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Next April I will be almost two years old and my mum and dad want to take me to India for two months. They have been there twice before but have never had the exciting(!) and exhilirating(!!) experience of having me in tow.
The problem is that they are not too sure where they should take me at that time of year. They think it will be too cold in the Himalayas (as when they got there in April it was too cold to play outside) and that it will be too hot in the South or Rajahstan (as when they left there in April it was too hot to play anywhere).
If there are any other two year olds (or one year olds or three year olds or four year olds or......) out there who have been anywhere at that time then can they please email me back.
PS: Dad says that we can't change the time of year that we go as we are then heading to NZ (to retire).
PPS: Any travel hints to make my life (or my mum and dad's life) easier would be very welcome.
Thankyou,
Rohan Samuel Lewis aged 18 months and 1 day

We are thinking of trying to get out of Sydney during the
2000 Olympics (to take advantage of cheap flights) and are
interested in the possibility of doing a house swap with
someone in Europe or just renting a house/apartment (like
the idea of a rural village in Spain, France or Italy). We
will travelling with our toddler and thought it would be
easiest to base ourselves in one spot and just do short
trips away from our base. Has anyone had any experience
with any of those house swapping or rental agencies? Also
does anyone have any experience with this sort of European
holiday with a toddler? I haven't actually been to Europe
before apart from 3 weeks in Italy on the tail end of a
Middle Eastern trip but my husband has done a lot of travel
in Europe and lived in Spain for a while and is itching to
get back.

Help,
Need to plan a holiday for next summer with two teens (14 &
18). Budget minded but not cheap! Kids like to hang out at
the beach, go snorkeling, eat out in restaurants (and the
latest music of course). They don't like site seeing, art
galleries and museums. Their parents like everything the
kids do as well as everything they don't. Have been to the
Caribbean and that works but am looking for something
different. Was thinking of Portugal... 1 week in the
Algarve (for the kids) and 1 week touring around (for the
adults). Anyone got any ideas or suggestions? We'd be
departing from Toronto and would like to keep it to the
either the Mediterranean or the Caribbean.

We're off to Ecuador in February with our four year old boy.
We would like to go to Galapagos, but we have heard that
most boats don't take children. And if they do maybe he
doesn't like staying on a boat anyway. Has anyone been there
with kids? Is it a good idea to go and stay in a hotel?
Should we book a hotelbased trip including daytrips or is it
better to just put up in a hotel and arrange trips once
we're already there?
Any other ideas about where to go in Ecuador?
