I've just added a new page to my website about our 4 month
budget trip to Nepal, India and Thailand (with kids). This
new page is quite a large story written by my 11 year old
daughter, about her impressions of travel to Nepal. Check
it out for a child's perspective.

My non-commercial website also has details on how we lots of
side trips on our 4 month independant trip, but also lots of
other info, tips, advice, our itinerary, important health
info, lots of photos, details of all our hotels plus heaps
more at
http://www.southwest.com.au/~lockley
Questions and requests for further advice welcome.
Ian

Ian and Gemma. Great story. Took my kids backpacking in Japan this February. We stayed in Hostels and rode trains and buses for many hours. We were chased by monkeys in the mountains and stayed with wonderful people in Kyoto. It was winter in Japan too and I thought they would never want to go traveling with me again. On the plane on the way home, I said well where should we go next, expecting them to say no where, they really surprised me and said Bali! So we are saving our $$$$ and hope to go next winter. Many happy trails to you!! My daughters are 8 and 14 and people are always happy to see children with backpacks on!!

Sounds great, Mad Potter. Tell me, is it expensive to
backpack around Japan? What was your total daily budget
    (minus main flights)?

We had been told horror stories about Japan. But honestly it wasn't too bad, just be smart.(finacially speaking) One of our most enjoyable lunches was running into one of those food marts with an entire wall filled with noodles. Hot water at the counter. Got our noodles and drinks and hiked down a few meters to a park and ate with the Nikko mountains in the background. Cold day, hot noodles and soup and hawks over head. The kids still talk about that! Our entire trip with plane tickets cost $1800. (We had a great deal on tickets $333.00 per person, with tax etc our tickets were $1100.00) So we spent $700. for the time we were out. For tickets I usually check out www.frommers.com look under the newsletter. When ever we can find cheap tickets that becomes our destination. We tend to travel off season, fewer crowds etc. One thing I will say about Japan people were so excited to see us, a woman traveling alone with 2 kids and full packs is not something they see everyday so there was some sense of adventure in what we were doing. The people were just fantastic. My daughters name is Rachael, if Gemma would like to correspond, my e-mail is posted above. Many happy travels to you and your family!
