Where to go?

I will have 3 - 4 weeks in April to travel with my sons,
ages 14 and 11. They have not yet been outside the USA,
and I would like to expose them to other cultures. We only
speak english (sorry, will learn!), and am NOT looking for
the resort experience. We were initially thinking Jamaica
then Yukatan penninsula of Mexico, but I've been warned
that Mexico is dangerous now. Suggestions please?

My boys really enjoyed Costa Rica-the wild life in
rainforest the people were very friendly, the beaches
beautiful the boys learned so much without realizing it.

Have just returned from a two week vacation to the Yucatan with our four and one half year old daughter. The Yucatan (unlike Mexico City) is quite safe. Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatan, is a beautiful city that will be an excellent introduction to another country. There are fascinating Mayan ruins easily accessible from Merida (Chichen Itza is two hours east and Uxmal and the Puuc cities are one hour south). The beaches on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Penninsula (in the state of Quintan Roo) are wonderful; we stayed at Playa del Carmen this time (which has more for families to do) and Akumal about six years ago (pre-parenthood). I can't recommend Playa del Carmen highly enough for a family beach vacation in Mexico.

  4. How 'bout Austria Added by: Heidi Bammer (treehousehotel@hotmail.com)

If you like to hike and enjoy the outdoors Austria is great! I am also American and I live here in a small village called Gruenau in Upper Austria. I also run a backpacker hotel and you would be more than welcome to come and stay with us and experience some Austrian culture. I have two boys ages 3 and 5.
Gruenau is located between Salzburg and Vienna and Austria is basically in the heart of Europe. Lots of people speak English these days so don't let that frighten you off. This time of year is also a cheaper time to travel since it is not yet high season. If you would like more information I would be happy to help. Please email me at treehousehotel@hotmail.com or call or fax Ph. 43 7616 84 99 fax:43 7616 8599. I look forward to hearing from you! All the best!
