Hey... go to the Italian Ice King of Corona in Queens.
There's a Boci court across the street with old and young
Italian guys who are undoubtedly wagering a fair amount of
money! South Street Seaport is neat. There's a little zoo
in Central Park - I enjoyed it.
I'll write again if I think of anything else!
I am a Manhattan dweller with children 4 and 6. My childrens' favorite hang-outs are as follows:
-Central Park(the carousel, boat conservatory, nature playground with its large marble slide, row boating on the lake (zoo is cute, but a little anti-climactic).
-Lunch at Mars 2001- Mars-themed restaurant on Broadway at 51st
-Grand Central Station
-American Museum of Natural History
-FAO Schwartz - toy store
-riding the atrium elevators to the top floor of the Marriott Marquis (Time Square)
-dinner and dessert in Little Italy (must be after dark)
-Staten Island Ferry (50 cents for an hour's ride with spectacular views)
-"Broadway Kids" show (child stars of Broadway perform)
-Oddly enough, the Port Authority bus station has a very interesting sculpture of balls and clockwork that has mesmerized my children)
-turtles and crabs in China town
-Liberty Science Center in Jersey City is a great excursion out of Manhattan
If I think of more I'll let you know!
I'll second the Manhattan Children's Museum...even though
they were doing construction a month ago, there's still lots
to do. Check out the NYC Fire Museum (in the Village
area) if he's into fire trucks. The gift shop alone is
worth it!
walk across the brooklyn bridge (free), ride the tramway to
roosevelt island ($1.25 subway token), the Brooklyn botanic
gardens(easy subway access, clean, safe, you can run around,
decent restaurant) walk around the east village along saint
mark's place and see lots of wierdos with blue or orange
hair and pierced everything ( it's safe but feels wild),
check ahead for lots of concerts in central park or prospect
park in brooklyn, there are also several free pools in the
parks, check in Time Out or call the NYC parks department,
If your kid likes trains, the transit museaum in brooklyn
has subway cars and bus stuff and often has kid activities.
Have fun.
