Teenager in Mexico

I've been asked by my son (who doesn't live with me) to take
him on a trip to Mexico. He's 16 years old; has asthma so
air quality is an issue; he is also not a good swimmer; and
his idea of a great time is either watching really bad
television or haning out at the mall.
I'd like to take him with me to Mexico, as I think it would
be a great experience. My only experience with Mexico is to
rest on the beach and brush up on my spanish.
Does anyone have any suggestions that might make an
interesting trip for us? My preference is the west coast,
as it is cheaper for me to get there.
Thanks for your h

  1. asthma and travel Added by: Catherine

I am an asthmatic adult and a few years ago went to work in
Jakarta, Indonesia (which is up there with Mexico as being
among the top polluted cities of the world). Anyway the
amazing thing that I found was that my asthma was actually
heaps better there than here in Australia. It might be
worth checking out what your son's asthma triggers are to
see whether pollution is likely to affect him. I am
obviously troubled by allergens in Australia but have no
problem with pollution (at least asthmatically speaking).
Also just make sure you are familiar with your son's
medications (preventers and relievers) before you go and
carry spares in separate places in case one bag gets stolen
or lost. Also find out where you can go to get help if he
does have a serious attack. I think the trip would be a
good experience for him and help him realise that he still
can do amazing things despite his asthma.
    All the best,
    Catherine

  2. Maybe Copper Canyon? Added by: Prentiss Riddle (riddle@rice.edu)

If he's asking to go to Mexico, it sounds like he's ready to
try something different from TV and the mall. Maybe if you
ask him a little bit more about what he hopes to experience
in Mexico, the picture will be clearer. Gosh -- maybe he's
    growing up! :-)
    .
That aside, I'd say that Copper Canyon might be a
destination worth considering. I've never been there, but
it's said to be more spectacular than the Grand Canyon, a
comparison that should mean something even to a couch
potato. If time permits you could combine a train trip to
Copper Canyon and back with a few days of beach time on the
Pacific coast. Check out Lonely Planet or another good
    guide for details. Have fun!
