Next August I will be travelling to Autralia with my
husband and our two kids (4 and 2 years old). We would like
to visit Perth, Darwin and the surroundings.
Any place not to be missed ?
we are looking for places to stay (nice and cheap, of
course) such as hostels or motels, any good suggestion ?
We will be looking forward hearing from you. Ciao.

Hi, why don't you try the east coast instead. Everything
closer together easier to get around. Cheaper to get
around. Otherwise Monkey Mia is a place where wild/tame
dolphins come to feed at the beach. Also public transport
in Perth is supposedly very good.

I grew up in Perth and now live in Darwin, so I'll have to disaggree with the former post - definately visit Perth and darwin. So many people go to just the East coast, but I assure you that you'll be in for a much more 'Australian' experience on the West Coast and in the Top End. Perth is a great city - easy to get around. Fremantle (southern suburb_ is great to have a look around, and a nice place to stay, too. Three or four hours south is Margaret River which is a great region for beaches, wineries, food, craft shops etc... (hire care or own transport recommended, though). Perth has great beaches, too. There's a fun underwater aquarium and dolphin show at Hillaries in the Northern Suburbs. Sci-Tech discovery centre is also fun for kids.
Darwin is a long way away, but worth the visit (though very hot in the wet season October - April. Perfect weather but lots of tourists May-September). Only a small city (around 80000 people) and very multicultural and laid-back. Lots of wildlife things to do - crocolile farm, crocodylus park (must-see), jumping crocodile cruise, excellent wildlife park about 40km from town. Litchfield is a national park about an hour away - wotrh seeing for the waterfalls and swimming holes. Kakadu National Park is only a few hours away, but not as spectacular during the dry season. Katherine is a small town about 3-4 hours south which is worth a visit for a cruise (or canoe) down the gorge system, and other sights along the way. Also lots of aboriginal history stuff.
In Darwin, Mitchell Street (in the centre of town) has heaps of backpacker typle places, cheap eats etc. Oh, and April-October every Thursday night is Mindil Beach markets - crafts and entertainment and beautiful sunsets on the beach, but most importantly food like you've never seen before - hundreds of stall with all sorts of food from around the world (mainly Asian because of our proximity) all very cheap and delicious. A definate must-experience!
    Enjoy!
