Kid-friendly destinations in Mexico?

We'd like to take our two little girls to Mexico one of
these years and are thinking about suitable destinations.
.
We've travelled a good bit in Mexico but are not quite
adventurous enough to subject small children to the rough
style that characterized most of our trips. Neither are we
interested in a completely sanitized, Cancun-style gringo
experience. So we're looking for an experience that's
safe, reasonably comfortable but not necessarily luxurious,
and very Mexican.
.
Aside from the fun and general educational benefit of
travel to Mexico, I'm particularly interested in language
exposure. We speak a bit of Spanish around the house and
they have friends from Spanish-speaking families but none
of that has "clicked" yet for our girls. I'm hoping that
hearing Spanish used in a more natural setting may spark
their interest in the language.
.
A couple of thoughts have occurred to me:
.
(1) Anybody known of a nice resort frequented by
middle-class Mexican families? Maybe just a hotel with a
pool, a bit of garden and some playground equipment where
the kids are likely to find playmates their own age.
Ideally it would be in a place with some scenic or
historical interest to us grownups as well.
.
(2) When the kids are older, I've wondered about
family-oriented service trips. Maybe painting a school,
planting trees, or something of that sort. I know a lot of
such trips are sponsored by church groups, but we're not
from a Christian background so we'd need something that was
tolerant of non-Christian participants. And again, a
program that involved Mexican families would be preferable
to one that just consisted of norteamericanos.
.
Any suggestions along those lines? Or other ideas?
Thanks.
.
[And yes, I see the older threads on this topic further down
the Thorn Tree; forgive the redundancy.]

It has been a while since I was there (8 yrs.) but there is
a beautiful resort outside of Mexico City. It is called
Cocoyoc. I can't remember the town but the resort is very
popular with upper middle class Mexican families. The
resort at one time was a hacienda for Cortez. Some of the
original aquaducts and alot of the original architecture
make up the resort. It is very peaceful and one day we
will return with my daughter. It is close enough to Mexico
City for you to visit there as well. A very crowded place
but it has incredible history. Have a great trip wherever
    you go!!
