We are planning a safari trip for March 2000. We will be
taking our three kids ages 11, 9 & 6. Can anyone recommend a
great tour operator? Our time is limited to 2 to 3 weeks.
given that, would it be better to pay more and make all of
the arrangements before we leave the US? Does anyone have a
preference between Tanzania and Kenya?

Hi Jennifer, I'm thinking it may be better for you to
hire a 4 wheel drive in Nairobi and drive your family.
Maybe research some accom at say Masai Mara, Lake Navasha,
etc to get an idea of prices if you book before you go, but
it's not that hard to drive yourself. In Kenya UTC is the
main tour operator - they have a web site. I'll find it and
send to you. The kids will have an awesome time. Good Luck.,

    UTC web address is; utcn@Africaonline.co.ke
You don't say if you want to camp or stay in lodges etc?
There are some cheaper safari companies like Kumuka,
but you'd have to find out if they took children.
We drove ourselves and had our own tent - which is awesome
at night - you hear all the animals rustling around, and
snuffling under the sides of your tent (a bit scary) but
unreal too. Often in the morning when you put your head
out of the tent there are springboks or baboons still
around. Very special (though not the baboons as they are
really hard to get rid of).Ambosili was a bit of a dust
bowl, but you can't beat the view of Kilamanjaro in the
background of your photos. Good luck.

The best tour operator by far is Abercrombie & Kent. You
will pay more for their services, but they have the best
guides, the best accomodations, the best of everything.
They reallly take care of you from the moment you step off
the plane until you say goodbye. As for destinations, I
thought the Ngorongoro Crater was incredible, largely
because there are so many different ecosystems in one
area. But I also loved the Masai Mara, Serengeti,
Amboseli, and Mount Kenya. At any rate, you really can't
    go wrong. Bon voyage!
