I am hoping to travel to Iran in August or September of
1999. However, I am an American woman planning to
travel alone (apparently, I couldn't pick a worse
combination in terms of getting a visa). Does anyone have
any suggestions about how to obtain a visa?
Can I obtain a visa here in the United States? In Turkey
once I arrive?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Joan

I have found cheap holiday insurance on the net but I am
travelling to Turkey and am not sure whether the whole
country is classed as Europe (which cuts the premium by
about half). I know that Turkey spans two continents and am
unsure if I will be covered once I cross the Bosphorus.
Anyone had a similar problem?

Hi,
The following remarks are additions/corrections to the LP
Iran, second edition. They are the result of a three weeks
trip through Iran in April/May. In general, I found Iran
fascinating, its people truly friendly and hospitable.
Prices mentioned are prices as quoted by hotels,
restaurants, and taxis. At that time, open market rates were
about 8000 Rial for one US$. Iran Daily publishes open
market rates every day (May 18: 8230 Rial for one dollar).
Kashan:
There is a guesthouse called "mosaferkhunΘ Gulestan" located
at Motahhari Square, south-eastern side of the square, not
signed in English, single 15,000 Rial, shared toilets.
Within 100-200 meters of Khan-Θ Borujerdi, there are several
other old houses, such as Khan-Θ Abassian and Khan-Θ
Tabatabai. Both houses are more beautiful and larger than
BorujerdiÆs. Ask the locals for directions.
Taxi to Abyaneh: about 50,000 Rial.
NaÆin:
Guesthouse Eslami Inn is located near a square (which was
called Emam Khomeini Square û if memory serves correctly),
signed in English, single 15,000 Rial, shared toilets. They
took me to the police station first, probably to get
permission to stay there (??).
There is a very good, cheap restaurant at the square,
restaurant Kavir.

Lonely Planet people - please do not allow this 21 year old
guy from Jordan to keep spamming the site. Sure, one self-
righteous promotion is fine, but not one on every single
person's thread. People are posting and thinking they are
getting real responses only to find a post from this creep
on every thread. It is really unfair to us to have to deal
with his selfishness.

The following article appeared in the South China Morning Post on 24 May.
An Australian who allegedly tried to sell his country's secrets in Bangkok asked an e-mail chat group what canned fruit was best to use for sex.
Jean-Philippe Wispelaere's contacts with various sex, travel and defence chat groups reveal a conceited, penny-pinching, immature and perhaps lonely man.
The trail that eventually led him to wait - for FBI agents, as it turned out - by a baby grand piano at a Thai hotel with some of his country's top secrets in a shoulder bag criss-crossed the Internet for months before he joined the Defence Intelligence Organisation in mid-1998.
Wispelaere, 28, was lured from Bangkok to the United States in an FBI sting operation and charged last week.
Apparently, he had thought he was clever trying to sell top-secret papers to a so-far unnamed Asian country using a false identity. That arrogance shows strongly in the sharp put-downs he loved dishing out in, for example, travel advice on the Internet.
To a Canadian who wondered what currencies can be used in New Zealand, he wrote: "We use coconuts and trinkets. Blue marbles are especially appreciated, as they can buy no fewer than three sheep apiece."
A guru of budget globe-trotting, "JP" laid down the law about travel from Tibet to South America, from Hong Kong to Africa.
But his "advice" was racist at times.
"Gypsies are filth," he wrote. "I had no trouble with them in Italy. As soon as one got near I punched it very hard, male or female. I'm a 110kg bodybuilder, which makes life easier in that respect."
Wispelaere - or Piggy Le Hogg, as he styled himself on sexual matters - could pontificate knowingly about which sex films you should watch with a girlfriend.
He once asked what canned fruit to use in sex, writing: "Pears and apricots tend to be a little bulky."
Whatever his diversions, he acquired enough knowledge of military matters as a graduate student at the Australian National University to convince his country's spy masters to give him access to top-secret papers, many supplied by the US under sharing arrangements.
A travelling companion of Wispelaere's told an Australian paper Wispelaere was amazed at how easy it had been to steal secrets and that he had planned to spy for Britain.
The Sydney woman, 42, was quoted by the Sun-Herald as saying Wispelaere told her he was able to photocopy sensitive documents and "just walk out the door".
Wispelaere allegedly handed over 713 secret documents in exchange for US$120,000 (HK$930,000) from FBI agents posing as spies.
He faces the death penalty in the US if it is shown the secrets concerned nuclear weapons or military aircraft.

After a little searching, I have finally managed to swing a
visa into Iraq. Anyone know what the situation is there
with regard to
A) Depleted Uranium
B) Cholera &c.
C) Being shot for being a Westerner?
This seems like too good an opportunity to pass up, but I'm
rather concerned about the potential long-term risks (e.g.
to my children, should I ever decide to have any... will
they have more than one neck?).

Has anyone out there travelled this way or does anyone know if there are many travelling this way. If so can you get boats straight from Egypt to India.Do you need visas for all stops on route or can you get access at the port, ie in Jedda. What are the prices to travel on these boats and how safe are they

A couple of questions about costs. I need to know if I'm
able to do the whole thing with my savings, so please let
me know:
1. Prices of the budget accomodation in Syria, Lebanon,
Egypt and Jordan. Budget means for me max. $6-8 for a
double room or max $3-4 for the dorm bed (if there are any
dorms there).
2. Transport costs: e.g. prices of the bus/train trip from
Hallepo to Damascus, Amman to Aquaba, Aquaga to Nuwayati
(ferry).
3. Syrian consulates in Turkey? Istambul? How many days of
waiting for the visa? Kinds of visas? Prices?
4. Does Syria any of the countries mentioned in 1. have
something like the special Tourist prices (as it is in some
countries for transport)
5. Any problems on the borders or with the police when in
the country?
6. Has anyone gone to Libia? (...and came back?)
Thanks
PS I know that I can find these answers in the LP guide
book, but I cannot get one here, so please share your
knowledge and experience.

Just on more question from me before I am travelling to
Iran. Is malaria a serious threat to travellers in the
south (or anywere)?. I get different types of information,
depending on the doctor I ask - or the vaccination-web site
I visit. I am not sure about whether it is necessary to
take som heavy medicine, or I can get away with a normal
doze - taking a couple of pills every week.

I am going to be in Turkey next month and would like to buy

wondering if anyone who has bought a Turkish rug recently
could give me a ballpark figure what I should be aiming to
bargain the price down to (having travelled extensively
throughout the reason, I'm sure from experience that it
would be pretty easy to get tricked into overpaying!!)
Also, I was planning to take the bus from Istanbul to

b) cost c) how long it takes??
Thanks all

Does anybody have a clue on travel in the Caucasus
countries, particularly Georgia and Azerbaijan? I am
planning a trip from Karachi (Pakistan) to Athens (Greece)
via Iran, Turkmenistan (I already have a visa invitation),
Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, but fear that as I have been
able to find so little out about the Caucasus, I may have to
re-route. The only vaguely useful info is in the Trailblazer
Asia Overland guide, but it's so sketchy.
Or would it be a better trip to go from Iran to Turkey and
then south to Istrael? Does anybody know how cheaply I could
pick up a flight to London from Israel?
Back to the Caucasus and Turkmenistan: how likely am I to
find other travellers there? Is there much to see? How long
should I allow to do these places justice (I have three
months in total, and intend to spend about a month in Iran)?
How much is shoestring travel there likely to cost? What's
the climate like? And would anybody be interested in joining
me? I'm a 20-year old UK student who has so far been to
India, Nepal, Thailand, Laos, China, Pakistan, Burma,
Cambodia and Tunisia. I consider myself pretty adventurous,
but do like to take it easy with a beer/check out clubland
too (though obviously not in Paklistan, Iran, etc.!)
I have very little time really to get the visas (I have the
Iranian and Pakistan ones already, plus the Turkmen
invitation), so may just go for the Israel option unless
somebody can help me fairly soon: I am flying out from
London Heathrow on 19th June... .
All advice etc. would be VERY gratefully received.
Cheers!

Just returned from a trip to Istanbul. It was terrific. The sites were wonderful (the main ones and smaller ones.) The Blue Mosque is a must see especially if you can observe quietly and respectfully in the rear during the late afternoon prayer. I suggest getting out of the main tourist areas and experiencing some of the neighborhoods. I encountered a group of school kids by the Feityeh Camii; they were so excited to meet an American and were anxious to practice their English. They even volunteered to accompany me on my walk to Balat. One played her flute for me! I stayed at an Ottoman style hotel in the Sultanahmet area. Great location. Easy to walk to the main sites, the covered market, Eminonu and surrounding area.. A Bosporous ferry ride is a must although the 3 hour stop at Anadolu Kivagari is too long. The people I met were kind, friendly and helpful. I got lost a couple of times and was able to easily get re-directed by local folks. (For women travellers: I was travelling alone and never had a problem; just need to totally ignore some of the heckling and attempts at conversation; I was able to comfortably walk to most sites in Old Istanbul. Of course, I did not venture out alone in the late evening, although walking around in the early evening was okay.) Thanks to all of you who were helpful in answering my questions about Istanbul and who encouraged me to stick to my travel plans in spite of the PKK activities. Istanbul is a fabulous place -- go if you can!

I am leving for Iran in two weeks, and I would be very happy
if somebody could give me some advice on this
financial questions:
1) How should I bring my money along? (for a 30-day trip) I
have heard that the exchange of travellers cheques are
unfavorable for the traveller - cash exchange is much
cheaper. However, what about the security (it is not nice to
walk around with more than 1000 dollars in cash in a
pocket on your stomach all the time).

We are planning a 3-week trip to Turkey later this Fall. We
don't like to move too quickly, we'd like to spend at least
a few days at each destination.
Understanding that Instanbul could easily take weeks on its
own, but that we only have thre weeks, would it be realistic
to try to got to Instanbul, Ephesus and Cappodocia, with a

Is this long enough? Or would it be better to do the

Hi Guys
I've lost both your addresses as, in my attempt to avoid
such scary phone bills, I loaded some free Net phone call/
ISP software onto my computer. Total disaster followed and
my previous provider told me how many other people had had
the exact same problem when I called and crawled back to
them!! I lost all my computer data including your email
addresses. Rob, I know you're not going to Iran anymore
but would like to keep in touch. Anthony, we can't meet up
in Tehran if we don't establish contact again before
then!! Till I sort things out please email me at the
Hotmail address above. Speak to you soon.

-whats the cheapest fare to get from Suez straight to India
-What are the main routes and companies that do these kind of journeys
-Could anyone give me info or links to finding out more info on this
-Does anyone know if its possible to get work on a boat on such a trip, either organized already or just by asking around while at the port?
thanks for your time and any info

Hi fellow travellers,
I am in the process of planning a trip from January 2000 on,
overland through north africa to iran , pakistan and india.
Does anyone know how to travel between egypt and iran? Would
North through Jordan, Syria and Turkey be an option in
winter? Or is it possible to get from egypt to the UAE
somehow to catch the boat there? How would this go with Saudi
visa? Also, is it possible to get a bus through Saudi Arabia
and then get a transit visa?

Im trying to get to India overland from Turkey. At the moment im traveling alone, I have not done big travel like this before and im wondering can I do this, if so how, roughly how long it will take and around how much cash will I need for it.
Whats the best way to hook up with people in turkey who might be doing the same, should i wait in istanbul, meet them and get all visas there or go to the last Turkey border town with a visa and wait there.Or should I apply for it here in Ireland.
thanks
Duncan
When you get a visa does it have definite dates on it or does it start from when you enter.
If i leave Iran for a week to go to a cousin in Dubai does this count on Iranian Visa time or is it stop started

A recent article in the travel section of The New York
Times spoke about how the Yugoslavia situation and the
pending Ocalan trial are destroying the tourist season in
Turkey. Sources in Turkey described a lot of empty hotel
rooms and the threat of lost air charters that normally
would bring in tourists.
I am not one to react to bad news by dumping my travel
plans- in fact I haven't even made them yet. It sounds to
me like Turkey could be a bargain this season. Does anyone
have any input as to whether tourism is actually down,
hotels are more willing to cut a deal, sites and beaches
are less crowded, etc? I would think one fallout would be
lower air fares into Istanbul, but so far I have not seen
any to speak of. Would it be cheaper to fly in from London?
Thanks very much.

Thanks to all who have sent info in the past. It's been

question is about recommendations for 3 star hotels with
a/c in Luxor and on the West bank. Also, how much time does
the trip to Hurghada take and can we plan on seeing Abydos
and Dendara on the way or is that a day's outing in itself?
Any more recent info on the ferry crossing to Sharm? We get
sea sick so if July waters are just are turbulent as Feb.
maybe we'll try the land route. Any recommendations would

I have the application forms in front of me but I am
somewhat confused. It says visa fees are (one or two
entries) as follows: American Citizens - $61.00 ($16.00
visa fee + $45 Application fee) Now my question is if my
daughters want to go to Lebanon while there, they would
need either a 2 entry or multiple entry visa. How do you
figure the cost for that? Anyone else have this problem?
I don't want them to have to get them at the border. It
would be less complicated for them to have it before they
leave.

Hello,
I am planning an extended journey to the Middle East and
Central Asia for this coming fall. I will start off
working on a Kibbutz after which I intend on journeying in
Jordan, Syrian, Iran, and possibly Egypt. My main question
concerns travel from Iran into Uzbekistan:
Is it possible to rail from Iran, through Turkmenistan,
into Uzbekistan? Also, I'm interested in taking the train
to Moscow from Central Asia. Is this doable?
I would be grateful to any feedback on do's and dont's in
and around the Middle East. I'm a U.S. citizen, so for
those who might know, how accessible are visas to the
aforementioned areas?
Additionally, I'd love to teach English in these areas or
Eastern Europe. I'm wondering how easy it is to pick up
this kind of work without a TESL certificate.
Any information you can provide would be appreciated.
Thanks a million.

Dear travellers,
I am planning to spend my summer vacations in IRAN, in the
Lonely planet (1992) I've found two news that I've found of
particular interest:
1) Is it still working the law that allows only 5 films
to be brought in that country.
2) Is it still usual that travellers with backpack maybe
not accepted in Hotels because Iranian people often
associates it with the beat generation ( that is not totally
compliant with their point of view of life).
Reading through the topics in this page I've read that it
is not possible to travel in IRAN without buying an
organized tour, is this true ?
If anybody has an answer for these question I'll be very
grateful for every information; on my side if anybody has
questions about Middle East (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan ) or
Nord Africa ( Lybia and Tunisia ) I'll be delighted to try
to answer them.
Best Regards
Gabriele Pierantoni

There is no such universal rule that you shall join a tour
to get Iranian Visa! NONSENSE.
Certain people may find it a bit more difficult to obtain a
visa, such as a young female travelling alone or certain
nationalities such as the US and Brits ( Still lots of them
get to Iran ). But they too shall give it a try to get
visas ( preferably with a local sponsor ), if not, there is
still this chance of getting transit visas which could be
extended several times ( max 4 ) for different periods (
from 5 days to two weeks sometimes ). Or there are travel
agencies which would apply a visa for you on booking couple
of nights with them, though the rates would be remarkably
higher than usual. If it is worth or not, is upto you, but
don't ask me 'which travel agency?'. I won't amswer no
more. Go and find them by yourself ( This way I won't be
accused of publicity! )
But there is no such universal rule that you should join a
tour to get the visa. Iranian visa needs a good backpack,
patience and determination. Do NOT give up with the very
first turn-downs from embassies. Show you are determined.
They have no such instruction to limit tourists. Infact the
President Khatami's policy is to promote tourism exchange.
Ask those who have already been to Iran ( recently ) for
info. They are accessible on this site. Denis Zagloboutski,
where are you now? ( He met me in my office in Tehran and
exchanged a lot of good stories of his travel to Iran ).
Iran is very safe for travellers, man or woman, alone or
not ( in comparison with Turkey for example ). As far as
you exactly know where you're going and with whom and as
long as you observe the islamic codes, there is nothing to
worry about.
For US nationals, the governments of the both sides which
are desparately working on making things normal again, are
a bit conservative, with Iran's hesitation in granting
visas and US govn's warnings issued by Depatment of State.
Infact the Iranians are so hospitable that you won't need a
tour operator to help you. ( Poor travel agencies ! ) You
may even get lodging with locals for free ( just use your
intuition to define who's honest, who's not, mostly are! )
Go for Iranian GenXers. They are very different from what
you may have already heard on Iranians. They mostly speak
good English ( if not French or German too! ), have good
knowledge of western culture ( are Baywatch-watchers !). If
you miss your music ( no matter 'Doors' or 'Black Sabbath'
), the Iranian 25+ years old youth may be of some help!
There are now more than 70,000 internet users in Iran ( in
ME standards, it's remarkable ). Find them on-line and do
your homework before coming to Iran. Guide books may come
short in hands-on info.
Take your backpack: The most difficult part of a trip is to
get out of home!
God save Lonely Planet and its Lonely Travellers!

It is reported that Israel's National Parks Authority has
authorised a private contractor to build a submerged
floating bridge into the Sea of Galilee so tourists can
simulate Jesus' walk on water. The 28-foot-long crescent-
shaped bridge, with room for 50 people at a time, will be
two inches below the surface. There will be no railings but
lifeguards will be on hand in case a walker, carried away
by the experience, goes too far.

Hi everybody!
I'm travelling to Jordan, Israel and Egypt this summer.
I prefer LP guidebooks (I'm used to them for once) over
Let's Go ones. However, LP does not have the updates from
at least 1997 for the Middle East (I know that there are
some updates on LP site - but unfortunately not for
Jordan yet!!!), whereas Let's Go has a new guidebook out for
1999.
Are there any critical changes in prices and hostels and
stuff that would really affect me if I stick to LP? Or
should I take the Let's Go? Oh, I really really can't
decide...
Thanks for your thoughts, Em

I read a couple of posts on this thread that expressed less
than enthusiastic sentiments regarding the orient hostel(in

oblique, I'm not really sure why people are turned off the
place. I'm leaving for Istanbul in a couple of days and
have made the Orient one of my definite options as a place

If anyone has scoop about why this hostel should not be

I'm also more than eager to receive recommendations from
people who've been to Istanbul regarding cheap( i'm on a

Thanks.

As an iranian who regularly visits this site, I come across
several postings as well as inquiries to myself, from US
nationals on how to get to Iran. I would like to put a last
word on it:
I haven't yet heard of any US national who's got a visa (
with or without Iranian sponsor ) to Iran. The only way is
through travel agencies. Now if you're not for a guided
tour, there is this chance for you to have an individual
tour for you alone ( which will cost a bit high of course
). The point is the Iranian government would like to keep
an eye on you. It is both for your safety and that of our
national security!
And if there are so many Americans willing to visit Iran,
why don't you find each other on the net and make a tour
group of your own ( under a travel agency )Lonely planet-
style?!

It used to be the "ugly Americans" and I'm sure they
probably deserved it...(I am an American), however I must
say the Italian groups I have run into in my travels
throughout the middle east have been the loudest most
inconsiderate, self centered, egotistal group of people I
have ever encountered.
I realize one is on thin ice when making generalizations,
but I having observed a lot of groups during my travels
I have yet seen any group of people so consistant in their
poor behavior.
I have also found the German groups not terribly popular.
Now that I have ripped the Italians and Germans I'll be
nice.
My nominees.
Best travelers...easy winners..Australians..their cool
without even trying.
Dutch..Very nice friendly people.
Swiss and French...haven't run into groups but individually
very nice.
Japanese...never mind. love those umbrellas.
I'm sure I'll get a lot of disagreement on this subject but
hey that's what makes the world go round.
I didn't comment on Americans because quite frankly I have
seen very few if any American tour groups...basically
Americans tend to be pretty cowardly when it comes to
travel in the middle east. A friggen camel is shot and
they cancel their trip.

overnight sleeper from Istanbul to Ankara and then bus to
the region is this better than the bus? I would really
appreciate any help here. One other thing is it posssible to
get a gulet from Antalya to Fethiye rather than go by road.
How long would it take and the name of a company that does
this would be appreciated. Many thanks

Some friends of mine are planning to go to Egypt and then go
overland from there to Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Also
hopefully we will be able to go to Jerusalem also. 2
concerns i have is from Egypt how should we proceed from
Eqgypt directly into Israel to Jerusalem the danger of that
I heard is that I will have stamps that will not allow me to
enter Syria and Lebanon. Also to go to Lebanon from Jordan
I will need a Syrian visa that will have to be souble or
multiple entry. Should I gett he visa from here in the US
at home or from Jordan. i got the Syrian visa form but it
says point of entry what should I put since I won't be
flying into Damascus but coming overland. I would
appreciate any advice.

I am bike touring through Turkey and was wondering if anyone
has done it. I am going down the West Coast and hopefully
going to make it to Antalya (I've got 16 days). A few
questions:
1. How bad are the roads for biking?
2. Is camping going to be a real hassle? (as LP suggests)
3. Is bike theft a strong possibility (without extra
anal precautions)?
4. And last but not least, has anyone seen any

I've had enough of London, it stinks! The West (Europe)
sucks too. It's too damned expensive. I'm now trying to
plan a trip overland from here home to Australia, but can't
decide on a route. There's about 3 possibilites: through
the Middle East; through the Central Asian 'stans; or
through Russia and Northeast Asia. I'm pretty keen on
taking the 2nd or 3rd options, but, from what I understand,
getting visas would be too much of a hassle/expensive. I'm
not into planning things too much, and if I was to go to ex-
USSR, that would be exactly what it would require. I'd
prefer to get visas on the way, keeping my options open.
What are these routes like for Australian passport holders?
What's the story when it comes to border crossings (eg.
turkey->iran/iran->pakistan/ pakistan->china...) Can
anybody please offer some advice?

Yeeks, the TTTC doesn't let any posts go old and moldy, does it? I'm still looking for travel companion(s) or Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and Egypt for a month or 2 in the June, July, August timeframe. I've traveled to Europe, Morocco, and Turkey mostly with tours. but now that all of you LP-types have emboldened me, I'm ready to give it my all (I think) and do this trip independently. I'm female, 45 (already?), and have just spent the last 4 months studying the Arab-Israeli conflict at the local university in preparation for this trip. (I wanted to understand why Syria won't let anyone into the country who has an Israeli stamp in h/h passport.)
And, thanks to all of the folks so far who have helped me get this far! Sue.

We (my boyfriend and I) are going to Iran next month. We will fly from France to Teheran, and I would like a few advices from those who have travelled in Iran recently. What places would you suggest ? Teheran, Ispahan, Yazd, Mashad, Shiraz, the Caspian Coast (???), countryside ? Is it best to travel by train or by bus (safe ? cheap ?).
One precise question : how do we go to central Teheran from the airport without taking a taxi AND without getting to the opposite place we wanted to go to ?! Another question : the LP Middle East guide says the cheap hotels in Teheran are located in a non safe neighborhood : is that true ? Where are the best (cheap and safe) hotels ?
After Iran, we will go to Turkmenistan, Ouzbekistan and Kirghizistan. Did anyone of you went from Iran to Turkmenistan (by bus, by train ? any troubles ?).
Any other advices for a cheap and pleasant everyday life as a tourist in Iran ?
Thank you !!!

Here are the top five reasons to take a tour rather than
travel independently:
5. You don't have to handle the local money, which is often
covered with foreign germs. An exception is Lebanon, where
they take real money (dollars).
4. If you don't know Arabic, naturally you must take a tour
3. You don't have to interact with the locals, who are all
camel jockeys out to steal from you and give you fleas
2. You can see Baalbek, Palmyra and Jerusalem the same day!
And.... the number 1 reason is:
1. Independent travellers have to stay at cheap hotels; all
nice hotels are reserved for tour groups.

Oh No! In eager anticipation of my forthcoming trip to
Israel (I'm a 32 year old woman, planning to travel alone) I
rushed out and bought my copy of the Rough Guide to Israel.
One of the first pages I looked at was the woman travellers
section, to be told that "unfortunately, it's difficult for
a single woman to have a coffee, a stroll or a sunbathe" Oh
well, I told myself, everybody knows the Middle East isn't
the most relaxing place for women. But then, down the page,
I read all this stuff about the danger of rape and serious
sexual assault, referring readers to rape crisis centres in
the big cities! And not even the usual calmers like "you
may get hassled but serious sexual assault is not really a
problem" or "you're no more at risk from rape than you would
be at home" and so on.
So, I'd REALLY like to hear from women who've been to
Israel: should I pack that chador and/or personal alarm, or
are Rough Guide being alarmist?
Thank you!

The title is "Turkey Survival Kit". What a relief to start
learning about a country. Written by the two who spent just

My wife and I are planning to spend 8 days in Turkey
starting next Saturday. I was extremely perturbed this
morning to read about Sunday's grenade attack on an Istanbul
cafe and the torching of several municipal buses, both in
connection with the Ocalan affair. The AP report was very
brief, however, and gave virtually no details. Until this
story, I had thought that the violence was primarily in
southeast Turkey.
I am now beginning to question whether my wife and I should
postpone our trip. This would, of course, result in
substantial costs and inconvenience, but I don't want to put
her in danger. Could someone familiar with the situation
there please give me a worm's-eye view of what's going on
and the general atmosphere?
I am aware that there are always dangers associated with
travel and have put myself in fairly sketchy situations more
than once (e.g.- Egypt in '94). The picture changes
substantially, though, when one gets married. What I seek
is an objective assessment of the scale of the danger.
Finally, I'm not interested in who's right or wrong--just
whether or not it will be safe when we're in Istanbul
(primarily Sultanhamet), Cappadocia and Bodrum/Ephesus.
Thanks very much in advance.
Kevin

I was reading the book Beirut to Jerusalem last night and it
went into the history of the Middle East....it basically
starts off by saying that in the late 1800's and early
1900's the Jews decided to move back to Palestine by
emigrating there from around the world....they did this and
basically just set up shop again, after not being there for
over a thousand years, in the middle of the Arab world,
based on (I suppose) the idea that Bibically that is their
homeland. And then the Western countries propped them up
and carved up an area for them post-WWII.
I'm a Catholic American, and thus have no genetic/political
affiliations with either the Jews or Arabs, but this seems
to be a pretty clear situation.....the Jews made their move
back and stole land, backed by the Western countries, from
the people that inhabited that land for thousands of years

Why doesn't Syria just mind it's own business. It rules
Lebanon as virtually a proxy puppet state, it funds the
Kurdish terrorists in Turkey, it's ruled by a dictator Hafez
Assad who allows no opposition, it's not very enthusiastic
about the peace process, either. Smarten up, Syria!
