  1. Weather Added by: Mel

I was there around about October last year and the weather
was hot, hot, hot. I wore long pants and long sleeves
everywhere in Syria obviously (except Palmyra) but it was
not unbearably hot. I would definitely find out more about
the American visa before I went before they are so anti-
american there (no coca-cola or any american products) you
may come into trouble. The guys at the border from Turkey
are as dodgy as they come. We rang 2 days earlier and they
said there was no fee for the visa and when we got there
the guys being the counter said it changed the day before
and it was a $US30 charge. There was nothing we could do
so we had to pay it. When we went to change enough money
for $US30 the change bureau people short changed us but we
weren't going to pay any more so they ended up ripping off
their own guys. But after saying that it is definitely
worth the visit. Lebanon is fine. Is it so westernised
    you won't have problems there.
    Have a good one.

  3. visas Added by: david (thestinkydog@hotmail)

In 1991 my USA passport and I had no problem getting a Syrian visa in Amman, but from
what the guidebooks say, you can't count on that any more; I almost get the feeling that a
Syrian visa is hard to come by at any of the embassies in the region. I'm planning to go in
June this year (from Turkey) and am trying to get a head start by obtaining the visa through
the Syrian Embassy in Washington D.C. A double-entry visa to Syria is $US61 (necessary if
you also want to visit Lebanon by land; Lebanese visas are apparently available at the Syria-
Lebanon border). Now let's see if the Embassy actually puts the applications in the mail!
Does anyone know if the Syrian Embassy in Istanbul is helpful? I'm worried that I'll end up
in Istanbul, unable to get a Syrian visa and saying things out loud that I shouldn't!

  4. so much misinformation Added by: Chuckles

The problem with posting questions here is that you get a
shitload of misinformation. Of course, you could just have
asked the Syrian consular section in their DC embassy, where
you would find helpful people to answer your questions, but
    noooo...
    ,
There is no anti-Americanism involved, Syrian visas are easy
to get by mail from DC although indeed impossible in Amman.
Call them, and they'll send the form, they're efficient and
reliable, quite different from the Jordanians or Lebanese.

Syrians are very welcoming. You will have no problems. Try
and get a multiple-entry visa, then you don't have to worry
about getting in and out. Remember to register at the Dept
of Immigration if you are in Syria for more than 15 days.
Coke is bad for your teeth anyway. Stick to tea and enjoy
    Syria !!!
