I have one day in Amman before heading south, and I'm
told that Amman in itself is not that amazing (or am I
mistaken?) anyway for those who've been, which would be the
best option for that one day, dead sea or Jerash (or maybe
something else?
Also any favourits for a good cheap hotel in Amman or
Cairo?
Thanks
Lefrog

but as an affluent city, it has some superb Arab
restaurants.
Jerash.
I say it depends what you prefer :
The dead sea is beautiful for its environment, dramatic
landscapes, deep canyons, steel grey very still sea.
Jerash is a beautiful archeological site, fascinating
history and architecture.
Amman is not that boring...
I agree with the post above. It all depends on your
interests. I do have a recomendation on an inexpensive
accomadation in Amman. Try the Venezia Hotel located on
Prince Moh' St. in downtown Amman. They are on the 3rd floor
and have internet access.
Amman it self enjoy a long and rich history for so many
civilizations, however if you more interested in the Dead
Sea or Jerash, I would suggest you start your day with a
trip to Jerash which should take about 4-5 Hours, have
lunch in Jerash and in the afternoon head west to the Dead
Sea, watching the sun set, and a swim in the warm salty
water of the Dead Sea is a real unique experience.
As for hotels, I can offer you accommodation at my hotel
"Amman Mirage Hotel" for 30.00$ including buffet breakfast.
Its a first class hotel, located in the city center...

unless you're interested in cheap souvenirs - Amman is
pretty boring.
Jarash is a nice encient city, you can spend a couple of
hours there.
But as I said in the topic: if you have just one day in
Jordan - go to Petra!
You should at least see the Castle on Jebel al-Qousour near
downtown Amman, and the Roman Theater, also nearby, and
sample some local cuisine. A day or so in Amman wouldn't
be such a waste if you spend some time wandering around
these sites and seeing some downtown. There were more
souvenirs in Petra than in all of Jordan's other areas,
given that it's the country's best-known tourist site, so I
don't know why "Matan" would think Amman is the souvenir
capital of Jordan. If anything, I thought Amman had few
tourist-oriented places other than those above.
The Caravan Hotel in Amman give a good price for the lonely Planet book user,s. The hotel is recommended by the lonely planet.
