Sultanahmet

I will be spending a few nights in Istanbul in mid or late
June. I want to stay in Sultanahmet, and have been
considering: Turkoman, Alzer, Ambassador, and Hotel Park.

I don't plan to be in my room too much, but what I really
want is a view of the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofia, etc. while I
am having breakfast and when I return at night. This seems
to imply that I need a place with a rooftop restaurant or
similar. Anyone have any suggestions or opinions?

I am pretty flexible on the price. Also, at this time of
year should I reserve ahead, or can I get a better rate by
walking in?

Thanks.

  1. Empress Zoe Added by: John
[Timestamp: Sat 1 May, 15:18 Tasmanian Standard Time]

My wife and I stayed in the Empress Zoe, near Topkapi
Palace, in Feb 98, and really enjoyed it. The hotel is
first rate and really comfortable. It wasn't cheap (sorry -
can't remember the rates) but it was well worth it. We
were 5 min from Topkapi, the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofia.
Check the LP Turkey - that's where we found the
    recommendation.

  2. Try Side Pension Added by: karen
[Timestamp: Sat 1 May, 20:05 Tasmanian Standard Time]

The rooftop of Side Pension/Hotel where you will have
breakfast will give you a view of the Aya sofia and the Blue
Mosque. Very friendly operation and one of the closest to
the locations you mentioned. YOu can choice between the 2
levels of accomodation. Fax them (details in Lonely planet)
and they will fax you back a reservation form. Yes, you will
need to reserve at that time as they are very popular.

  4. Try the Kervan Added by: RDB (RDB17@cornell.edu)
[Timestamp: Sun 2 May, 4:42 Tasmanian Standard Time]

R²ght now we're staying at the Kervan Guest House, a small
(5 rooms?) restored Ottoman house in a perfect location, at
the Cistern and a stone's throw from Aya Sofia. There is a
small terrace w²th great views of Aya Sofia and the Blue
Mosque. We're paying $35/night for a double with bath &
breakfast. You have to climb stairs, though.
The owner is Turgut Baturay, phone 212-527-2390. Yerebatan
    Caddesi, ▐eftali Sok. No. 10.
We started at the Ambassador, which is nice but pricier and
the view is not as good.
Business is slow in general and you don't really need
    reservations.

  5. Hotel Hali Added by: Tony
[Timestamp: Sun 2 May, 21:13 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Hotel Hali on Klodfarer Cad. just behind the hippodrome has
the roof restaurant view you want. It's a real hotel not a
    doss-house, but not expensive.

We stayed at Turkoman and loved it. The rooftop restaurant
looks over the Hippodrome and the Blue Mosque and you can
even see a little of the Bosphorous. We were awakened the
first few nights by the call to prayer from the Blue
Mosque, but that was kind of nice and by the third night we
slept right through it. It's not as cheap as you can get,
but it was a beautiful hotel and well worth it.

  7. Hotel Oncu Added by: TB
[Timestamp: Mon 3 May, 6:07 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I just booked the hotel Oncu on the internet. They have a
rooftop cafe with a great view. Check out their web site.
The cost of a single was $18 US dollars per night.

  8. Hotel Park is good too Added by: A
[Timestamp: Mon 3 May, 8:49 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I really liked Hotel Park. It is next to the side
pension/side hotel. It is safe, friendly and stored luggage
(twice). It is USD20/room. You can see the mosques and the
sea from the roof. The lonely planet contact details for it
    are correct (which is good).

  9. HOTEL SARI KONAK Added by: Steph (sleboissard@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Tue 4 May, 6:08 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    Hi,
I stayed in Hotel Sari Konak with my family, last summer.
The rooms have no view of Blue Mosque or St.Sophia(except
the balcony of one of the rooms).
But the rooftop terrace overlooking the Sea of Marmara and
Blue Mosque is terrific!!! Especially in the evening,at sun
set and at night...It was a big pleasure to have some drinks
on the terrace while enjoying the wonderful panorama after a
    long day...
    Sari Konak(means the Yellow House)is a small family-run
hotel. It is a restored old townhouse furnished
comfortably like a stylish home. The care and love of the
family members is evident in every details.
They serve breakfast either on the roof or in their small
and lovely patio enclosed by an old Byzantine wall.
If you are flexible on the price,I highly recommend this
hotel. The rate for a double room is about 80 USD.
In order to see the pictures of the hotel and have
info, you can visit their web site at www.sarikonak.com
    Enjoy your trip !

  12. Arcadia Added by: brazim (brazim@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Thu 13 May, 7:07 Tasmanian Standard Time]

If you book ahead ask for room 503 of the Arcadia
hotel...bed and breakfast are included and if you try a
travel agency (we went to Yume) you can get it for a deal..
It is breathtaking for dinner (very cheap) and also
breakfast (buffet all you can eat)...most hotels are so and
consist of a turkish type breakfast and tons of fresh coffee
here...Other places were simply ok for coffee and turkish
tea...Staff was great too...and theres a Museum in front of
the hotel so make sure youre higher than the fourth
    floor...Enjoy..... it was very romantic!

  13. Lodging in Istanbul Added by: Mehmet SEN (halifax@superonline.com)
[Timestamp: Sun 23 May, 0:11 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    Hi Sam,
Sultanahmet is a good choice to stay while you are in
Istanbul. It is quite convenient visiting the most well
known sites in Istanbul. everything would be on foot
    distance.
If you check this site www.lodgingturkey.com, you would view
some charming hotels in that area with excellent rates.
If you need any further information or if you have any
further questions before your trip takes off, drop me a
    line.
    Best wishes,
    Mehmet SEN
