Hello! Say, if you were to go to Turkey once, you would choose to visit Ephesus or Cappadocia? I am going Turkey soon but I still can't decide and time doesn't allow me to visit both places. I would like to hear other travellers comment. Thanks.

    You should visit Cappodoccia!

I've been to both places, and I have to say that while Cap.
was nice, Ephesus would rank higher in my book.
First, Cap. is pretty isolated and a long way from many of
the main sites, while Ephesus offers much more in terms of
sites in the nearby vicinity, such as Selcuk, Mary's House,
some great natural spring baths, and other ruins within 30
    min.
Second, ephesus is stunning. The sheer variety of
buildings - library, amphitheater, main axis, museum (in
Selcuk), etc. - will hold your attention.
I'm not saying Cap isn't worth a trip, but faced with a
    choice, i would choose Ephesus.
    Enjoy whatever you do.

Ephesus, hands down. The area around Ephesus (Selcuk) is
very interesting as well and, personally, I really disliked
    the atmosphere in Cappodoccia.

The natural landscape there is just incredible...beats
ruins no matter how interesting the history may be.

Because walking in this country is happines.
Later, in july / august, may be I'd prefer Ephesus.

Ephesus is the most extensive, most outstanding ancient
Roman city in Turkey, if not the entire Med. Cappadocia is
nice too, but is nothing to compare with Ephesus. We've
visited Ephesus over a dozen times, and it would still be no
    contest between there and Cappadocia.

Ephesus is a great classical site, probably one of the best, but you have classical sites all over the Mediterranean - Greece, Italy, Jordan, North Africa. Whereas Cappadocia is like nothing I've seen anywhere else, so if youare travelling in Turkey, i think you ought to give it preference.

I also went to both Ephesus and Cappadocia and I definitely
prefer Cappadocia. It's really unique and you can do plenty
    of walks there.

Depends on your interest & time of year. If you like
classical civilizations, Ephesus. If you like nature, early
Christianity, Cappadocia. The time of year is also
important. During the tourist season, you can barely move
in Cappadocia because the trails are narrow, some of the
entrances are so small that all you can see is tourist
butts in front of you. Epheseus & other sights are a bit
more maneuverable. Both are fascinating. bob

    Hi,
    I should prefer Cap.
Go to Urgup, walking up into the mountains,
You'ill see what you have never seen.
    (moon landscape)
No tourists if you deside to "climb" alone.
Melis otel is a cheap/good place to stay,
Inland prices of restaurants and hotels are much cheaper
    than the coast-side.

  11. Another vote for Cappadoccia Added by: Gordon
[Timestamp: Sun 9 May, 20:46 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Ephesus is too crowded and commercialised - I was _very_
disappointed. I've been to Cappadoccia twice now and would
go back tommorrow. No doubt in my mind given the choice.

...cappadocia! wow... what an amazingly unique and
mind-blowing region! a minumum of 2 days would make your
trip to turkey extraordinarily special, although spending up
to a week in the surrounds would allow you to really
    experience and explore the area.
    ***
the journey from istanbul (where, i assume, you are
disembarking?) to central cappadocia is 12 hours by bus, a
journey usually travelled overnight. an internal flight is
an option, although costs certainly do increase (even if
    travel times decrease proportionately).
    ***
spend time wandering through the ilhara valley, driving
through valleys filled with the most amazing eroded
sculpture, try some local wine, have a turn on a potter's
wheel in urgup, add a piece of your hair at the 'hair
museum', watch truly brilliant sunsets and rises... really,
there are so many ways to enhance your trip to cappadocia!
    ***
as historically interesting as epheseus certainly is, as
quaint as the area of selcuk is, travel your 12 hours to
    central anatolia...
    ***
if you are in the market, buy a carpet or kilim from the
cappadocian region... gorgeous local designs, great quality
pieces, enough apple tea to sink a battleship and lots of
interesting history within your souvenier. what more could
    you hope for?

Why not visit both. Flights in Turkey are about$60us one
way and will take you about 1 hr to fly from Izmir airport
(65 km out of Selτuk) to Kayseri 90 km out of cappadokia.
Unless you plan on visiting Turkey a couple times then to
miss one sight for the other is a terrble loss to you. The
flight may sound expensive but when you figure what your
time is worth when you work it isn't to much to pay.
    Have a good trip.
