I will have 7-10 days in Syria next April and want to rent either a car or 4WD. Can anyone recommend any companies that they have used for vehicle hire. I cannot use public transport as I will have a lot of equipment with me. Thanks....

There aren't soo many car rental places in Syria, and public
transportation is just the pits...i'm from there. If your
travelling with one or 2 other people it may be worth while
renting a small mini bus...more like a van...you can usually
find them around taxi stations...you rent the car and the
driver for a good deal $40-80 CAN and don't have to worry
about the crazy driving in cities like Damascus. Otherwise,
most car rental spaces are more or less the same. Good
Luck!
Europcar, Budget, Avis, Hertz. I mean, really, you could
have figured that out yourself.
So you clearly ready my post carefully. How did you find the services of Europcar, Budget, Avis, Hertz? I would especially like to know about your experiences with 4WD's. Thanks for being so helpful!!
Actually, you might consider getting a car complete with
driver. Hotels even of the very modest sort can arrange for
a car and driver. The costs should compare very favorably
with a rental car and with no hassle in case of accident,
breakdown, etc. Inquire of the places you are staying.
Perhaps US$50 per day is the ball park, plus some extra
meals and driver lo
We just returned from Syria where we had rented a self-drive
car for a few day only.
Driving in Syria was more complicated then we had expected.
In more remote areas there are Arabic roadsignes only or
none at all. At almost every road crossing we had to ask
the local people where to go. This can be very time
consuming. Larger roads were easier to go, especially the
highway between Aleppo and Damascus. Inside Damascus is
terrible to drive as you can imagine.
On the other hand you meet a lot of people while driving. We
got a flat tire and within a few minutes the whole village
was helping us. Didn't have to pay anything!
Our car was from Europcar: a little Peugot 106 for $60 a day
(unlimeted milage, with complete insurance), which is quite
expensive for such a small car.
Driving by bus in Syria is very straightforward, even with
luggage.
Hope this helps a little...

Car/minibus from a travel agency is a good bet, in
particular if you don't speak Arabic.... they will work out
at about 50-60 US/day.
