What's the best way of getting from Cairo to Sharm el
Sheikh? From what I've read, it sounds like the bus is the
best way. Also, are there any inexpensive places to stay
around Sharm el Sheikh that are worthwhile? I'll be going
in August.

    Hi
I traveled from Sharm to Cairo last year. I found that the
easiest way was to fly.. the bus ride was going to take a
long time, and flying wasn't too expensive on Egyptair.
PLus, it gave me another day in Cairo (ended up spending the
rest of the time in hospital, but I'm glad I had that one
    day!)
Sharm didn't offer much to see except for the diving in the
Red Sea which was amazing. It is a very expensive, touristy
town geared towards rich divers. All I can say is that the
Youth Hostel is a DUMP. (The worst place I stayed anywhere--
including Jordan, Cairo, Saudi Arabia and Western Europe).
They didn't turn the water on all day so the toilets were
full and the place smelled, it was far away from the city so
we had to take a cab everywhere, and the beds were old,
ripped and dirty. If you're willing to put up with it,
though, it was by FAR the cheapest place to stay!
Hope that helps a bit... any more questions? E-mail me!
    I'm in Saudi right now.
    :)

I was reading the 1996 LP Travel guide to the Middle East
and my family and I decided to drive up to Nariyah, in
North-Eastern Saudi Arabia, for the weekend as it was
recommended to see it's Bedouin market on Friday morning.
When we arrived in Nariyah, we were informed that the BIG
market actually happened on Thursday mornings, and the souqs
were scarce and skeletal when we went on Friday. However,
both my mother and I were asked to cover our faces by
Bedouin women and Moutawwa alike, so if you go-- try for a
Thursday, and be very modest. Even our headscarves didn't
save us from being noticed by absolutely everyone.

we took the bus about 3 years ago, it was terrible. Too
long, and everyone was smoking the whole time. If we had
known about the plane we would have taken it.

This person is going to places in Egypt, not Saudi. I
seriously doubt there is any pressure from people around
Sharm al Sheik that western women should veil! Nevertheless,
I would recommend that people are considerate and at least
cover out to the elbows and knees (long pants and long
sleaves are actually practical in protecting skin and
providing shade if thin cotton) - and I don't just mean
    women!
