Is there any kind of boat or ferry that goes from Istanbul
to Haifa, preferably via a few of the Greek Islands? Or
does anyone have any other interesting way of getting from
Turkey to Israel (avoiding Syria because I'm Jewish and not
too excited about going there). Any help gratefully
received.

I don't know if there's a ferry from Istanbul, but I know
there's one which leaves from Marmaris (on the southern
coast) and goes to Rhodes, then to Cyprus, and then Haifa.
Actually, it's 2 separate ferries: one from Marmaris to
Rhodes, and then another one to Cyprus and Haifa.
There are no direct ferries from Turkey to Israel, to my
knowledge, and we lived in Turkey and tried to work out
getting to Israel on a ferry. We gave up--it was too
difficult. You can fly from Istanbul or you can go as Jorg
suggests. Daily hydrofoils, not ferries, connect Marmaris
and Rhodes City. There is at least a weekly service from
Rhodes City to Haifa. By flying, you get there in a couple
of hours. The other way, at least two to three days.
We also tried to get a boat from Turkey to Israel a few
years ago. You can get a ferry from Marmaris to Rhodes and
then one from Rhodes to Haifa, but the latter takes 2 days
and was quite pricey. We ended up getting a standby flight
from Rhodes to Tel Aviv, which was actually cheaper than the
boat and only took an hour (and we got bumped up to first
class!). I would recommend doing the same thing, or else
getting a flight from Istanbul. Have a great trip!
