Yeeks, the TTTC doesn't let any posts go old and moldy, does it? I'm still looking for travel companion(s) or Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and Egypt for a month or 2 in the June, July, August timeframe. I've traveled to Europe, Morocco, and Turkey mostly with tours. but now that all of you LP-types have emboldened me, I'm ready to give it my all (I think) and do this trip independently. I'm female, 45 (already?), and have just spent the last 4 months studying the Arab-Israeli conflict at the local university in preparation for this trip. (I wanted to understand why Syria won't let anyone into the country who has an Israeli stamp in h/h passport.)
And, thanks to all of the folks so far who have helped me get this far! Sue.

You'll find your travel companions, no need to find them
beforehand. It's good that you studied up on the conflict
before your trip, because you'll be able to appreciate that
you're in a place where history is still unfolding every
day. Have a great trip!
Yes - you'll meet up with people as you go. Last summer my
husband and I backpacked in Israel, Jordan and Iraq. With
our Lonely Planet Guides we easily meet up with fellow
travellers.
Syria, doesn't recognize Israel - so you should visit Syria
first. Jordan and Egypt are fine. While in Jordan be sure
to spend at least 1 full day at Petra.
