Hello, I've just heard on the news that Ocalan was
scheduled for trial on May 31. I was planning to go to
Turkey around that date, however, I am quite unsure about
it. What's your opinion on this, will it be advisable to
travel to Turkey around such a date?
Another question, is it a better idea to go on my own or
buy a package with everything included??

Do not worry.Turkey is very safe.
    No PKK actions.

I took a tour with Cosmos for 2 weeks last March. We covered a alot a ground in that time, that would've been tough to do in that time. The land price was about $600, including many dinners. I noted that the hotels were pretty cheap, and it looked like it would be straightforward to take buses. I think time is the biggest factor.

Turkey is one of the easiest countries in the world to get
about. The bus system is just extraordinary. You'll save
money by organising your own accomodation and meals and if
you like a place, you won't have to be up and on the coach
the next morning. Unless you're horribly short of time,
    avoid taking a tuor.
    Have fun.

We're an Amer²can fam²ly in ▌stanbul now. We thought about
canceling and are very glad we didn't. This is a wonderful
country to visit, and very safe. There is no particular
danger from the PKK, at least if you avoid southeast
    Turkey. Security is tight.
If you want a tour, take a tour, but independent travel is
very easy (we proved it by travelling with a baby).

does anyone know how long the trial will take?
the prosecuters are asking for the death penalty.
I am more worried about being there when the verdict is
    rendered / carried out.

  6. you dont need a tour Added by: subie

turkey is very easy to get around and the people are
extremely helpful. In a tour you dont get the flexibility
to stay somewhere longer if you like it (or leave if you
don't!) and you're not as likely to meet local people or
other travellers. The buses are awesome. They are
comfortable, cheap and easy to negotiate. But it is a big
country, so dont try to do too much or you'll spend all
your time on buses. The Lonely Planet book is great for
getting around and finding reasonable places to stay and
    eat.

    Boycott Turkey.
Why doesn't the NATO bomb Turkish towns in which innocent
Kurds are being murdered. Why no military actions against
the inventors of holocaust (remember the killing of
    1,500,000 Armenians)

  9. It seems save to me Added by: Addy (addylont@hotmail.com)

At the moment I am in Istanbul and two weeks ago I crossed
the border from Iran to Turkey. The only thing I noticed
were the roadblocks by the army between Dogubeyazit and
Erzerum. People (Koerdish and Turkish) did not seem to be
tense. No frighting stories from other travellers too.
I feel the risk of getting an accident is much bigger than
the risk of the PKK meeting you in a bad way.
