I went to Turkey last year and I had no problems at all
sending things back home. Sometimes, the price change from
one city to another, I don't know why, it'a a very strange
thing of Turkey! My friend even sent his backpack from
Ankara to Canada! And we always used the cheapest way, by
sea. So you don't have to be afraid to send things back
home by sea, it will probably take a very long time (just
ask, they will tell you at the PTT), but finally you'll get
them. By the way, if they ask you "Is there a letter in your
package?", say no, even if you do have one, or they will
charge you the stamp on the letter even if it's in the box!!
I mailed stuff to the USA and New Zealand from Cairo in Dec
98 and the service was excellent. There is a special room
for sending parcels in the post office building near the
main railway station. It was never crowded and I got
everything sent in under 10 minutes including customs,
wrapping and the actual mailing. I was warned that the
package to NZ would take 3-4 months because I sent it
surface mail but it actually arrived within 2 months.
(Wish that I could say the same for stuff sent airmail from
Zimbabwe - 2 months later it still hasn't turned up!)
Nico,
Jane's right about Cairo - they're very reliable.
Things sent surface mail from there seem to arrive in
Australia well ahead of the 12 week estimated time.
I've done this a number of times now and it has always
arrived in Oz in 8 weeks at most. Surface mail costs only 7
Egyptian Pounds per kilo to Australia - that's about AUD 3!!
