Hi.
I'm going to Turkey this summer and am considering a side
trip to Georgia. Has anyone ever been there? I would
appreciate any travel tips/infomation about it!

    good idea
    I spent 6 weeks there July/August 1997
one of the most interesting, and freindly countries I have
    visited
also saw lots of semi automatic high powered rifles
(mostly not pointed in my direction)
security situation changes often, so I am probably very out
    of date

I traveled thru Georgia last July. The country is very poor
and not set up for tourism. If you're not an experienced
traveler, I wouldn't advise you to go there. It is not an
easy country to travel in. Anyways, there are few public
accomadations, restraunts etc. You'll have to arrange for
homestays. This can be done by asking locals such as taxi
drivers or anybody you can communicate with. Be forewarned
very little English is spoken. If you can speak some
Georgian or Russian, it will be much easier experience
there. Outdoor markets and small stores exist but black
market exchanges and corruption is the norm there however it
is not a dangerous country (i.e. it is unlikely you'll be
physically harmed). When you exchange money, go to the
Western Union outlets. They are the only places that accept
travelers cheques. I did not see any commercial banks nor
cash machines. Your other option is changing cash at private
exchange stalls located everywhere and at peoples'personal
residences. You'll see makeshift signs with the exchange
rates quoted. Take American dollars if you can. That is the
    preferred currency!
If you're self reliant and willing to put up with minor
inconveniences, you'll have a great adventure! You can Email
me if you have any further questions.
