Some translation notes
Bat-cat: I was a bit uncertain wether to use "kômorineko"
or not; what settled the matter was that the translated name was
significantly shorter. Note that the bat-cat has a slight accent on certain
words (for example, she pronounces "omae" (you) as
"omai") - I've tried to indicate this in translated
lines, but there are a few times where I've been unable to do so
satisfactorily.
Sword: Sword's speech patterns are occasionaly harsher/ruder than
I've been able to effectively indicate in translations. Oh, and I hope
I don't offend anyone by the indications I do use. Early on, he refers
to himself as "ore-sama", which I wasn't quite sure
what to make of - rather arrogant, at any rate.
Devil/demon: I've been translating (Aku)ma as either Devil or Demon
a bit haphazardly, mostly depending on what sounds good ("demonic
power" is better than "devil-power", IMO), so I figured maybe
I better tell you than there is no difference in meaning between devil and
demon here.
Techniques: I translate most stuff, but occasionally, a technique
name or similar would end up really corny ("Hellish Violent Destruction
Attack") so I felt it better to use the original Japanese instead.
Wings: At first, Ios' white wings are refered to as
"Hane", which can also mean feather etc. For Kanna's
black wings, appearing first in chapter 44, the word
"Tsubasa", which only means wings, is used. A very subtle
difference which I found impossible to keep in translation without
sounding way corny.
Suffixes: Since they can mean subtle but important differences hard
to indicate in translations, I've kept -san, -kun etc intact.
Uncle: I've translated "ojisan" (which Nanami calls
the Amano father) as "uncle"; maybe I should explain that
this is a normal way to refer to an older man and does not necessarily
imply that Nanami and the father are related.
Exchange student: Miyoshi Yuuki seems to like bringing new
characters into the cast by making them "tenkôsei",
which my dictionary translates as "exchange student".
However, I attach the notion of abroad/foregin to the word exchange student
(might be my english that is wrong, though) - whereas I think a
tenkôsei is usually just a transfer student who's changed school.
Devilspawn: OK, a more correct translation would be "devil-egg",
but when I first ran into the words "akuma no tamago", I
didn't know what it was, and "devilspawn" at least sounded cooler,
and after all this time, I'm loathe to change. That's all there is to the
explanation.
