Hi there!
I am a plutonium salesman and chemistryexpert, and was
recently granted a visa to North Korea in order to meet with
a "Kim" guy.
Have anybody out there travelled there - are there any
problem to buy fuel, food etc, and are the roads good
there??
I have only positive experiences from a similar trips in
Iraq.
Thanks!

Cycling in China is cheap, encironmentally friendly and
gives a great sense of freedom. However, here are a few
tips that could keep you alive.
1. A green light at an intersection does not mean it is
safe to proceed. The problem is that everyone else has got
a green light as well. This includes cars/buses/taxis
coming at you from the right (often up to 60 km/h) and
coming straight at you from head on (also up to 60km/h)!
This is a recipe for disaster. If you have a vehicle coming
at you at 60 km/h, I suggest STOP! To move may prove fatal.
I suggest move in a pack of other cyclists - car drivers
are less likely to run over a pack of cyclists than a solo
one. Often it is better to wait a few seconds at an
intersection for the air to clear before you move.
2. Give way to anyone bigger than yourself. This includes
motorcycles, taxis, trucks and buses. I have worked here
for the last two months and I am amazed at the number of
foreigners who I see with crutches and/or slings who have
asserted themselves in the traffic.
Having said all of this, crossing a road can be just as
difficult.
Finally don't think that the Chinese know what they are
doing. China (and India) have the highest accident rate for
any country. The statistics speak for themselves. Cycling
is not for the faint -hearted!!!!

Hi,
I'll be traveling for 2 months in China this summer, then
onto Pakistan. How can I get a visa good for that length of
time? LP says you can get a renewal of 15-30 days. I need
to get the maximum possible. Anyone know of a good PSB
office in southwest China where they'll give out long
extensions?
Also, LP says the HK CITS issues 90 day visas. Anyone know
cost and how long this takes?

To anyone who is looking to organize flights through
Interlink Travel in Taipei on KuangFu North Road, be
careful. The first time I called this place for tickets to
Maccau, I was quoted different prices by different agents
on the same day. The lower price was so low, that I took
it. The first agent told me that the low price was only for
Chinese, so I assumed it was only one questionable employee.
I booked a trip to Vietnam through the agent who sold me
the tickets to Maccau recently, and he waited for the last
minute to process my visa, and then he gave me the wrong
visa. There were so many mistakes on this thing...that I
didn't notice the worst one...it was a single entry
visa...and I told him that I needed to re-enter the country
from Cambodia at Moc Bai to get my plane. As for the
little errors...wrong age...wrong sex...wrong dates....he
said it would be no problem when I landed in Saigon. But,
of course it was a problem, however I was able to
straighten things out at the airport.
Bottom line...I may have been careless not to check the
most important detail on my visa...but it doesn't change
the fact that Interlink Travel in Taipei is a shady place.

okay, i know this is probably not only a repetitive question
but a embarassing one, what is the deal with all of the
stomach upset my girfriend says i am going to experience in
asia. We are going to bangkok and veitnam along with some
other places that i have yet to pronounce. My diet usually
includes lots of pasta, fruit and fruit juices, and chicken,
with the occasional junk food binge. She told me that i am
going to be eating alot of rice, which is not a problem, and
alot of vegetables, which is also not a big deal. So where
are the stomach issues going to arise from?
Also what are some ways to keep occoupied during a seriously
long plane ride with several layovers?

Someone 'down there' said the 'David Chan camera shop' was
busted for some reason.
I went down the arcade where it was (TST, Kimberley Road).
Right, David Chan is gone, but there is a shop which looks
exactly the same. They might just change names.
The arcade has at least 4 camera shops and all have new and
2nd hand stuff - also rare Leica and Nikon things. I bough
things in some of them over the years and I consider all
more or less OK.
Otherwise - take care in TST!

I travel to China in the end of June and plan to cross the
border from China to Vietnam in the beginning of July.
My last place to stay will be Kunming, where I would like to
take the train to Hanoi. Does anybody know, where the train
crosses the border, how often the train goes (what days)from
Kunming and if it is difficult to get a ticket (and a visa,
for that matter)in Beijing ?
Would be very thankfull for information !

Does anyone have any recent information about bicycling in
China? Specifically:
1. What kind of bicycles are available for rentals?
2. What kind of bicycles do the Chinese ride (I know there
are tons, but are they all the same old junkers?)
3. Are there any bike shops offering exotic/foreign bikes
(aluminum/titanium/carbon fiber)?
4. Do locals ride just for commuting, or also for pleasure?
Thanks in advance. (email is preferred, but please also post
here for the benefit of others)

Hi,
I'm planning to cross into China near Sapa (Vietnam) at Lao
Cai. At the Hanoi-airport they gave me a visa with exit-
point Saigon although I asked for the Dong Dang exit-point.
I didn't check it at the time as the papers I filled in
where clear and anyway, they do a good job : they don't
write "Hanoi" or "Saigon" as exit or entry-ports on your
visa but "Noi Bai" and "Tan Son Nhat" which appear to be
the airport-names of Hanoi and Saigon.
I'm now looking for a change of the exit-point in my visa
in Hanoi. Travellers-cafes tell me it is gonna cost me 23
US$...at that rate I might take the chance to get hasseled
at the border and pay them a 20US$ fine or not ???? Can
anybody help me on this one ????
Thanks a lot.

What do you suggest to a westerner living in a small

been stared at/commented on a couple too many times. Since
I have no Japanese friends and no car my options are
limited out here in the semi-countryside. I've taken as
many vacations as possible to get out of here and always
come back even more depressed. Of course I studied the
language for a year but never used it as no one talks to
me. I'm more often treated like a zoo animal than a human

I am a immigrant Chinese Canadian who lived half of my life in Asia and the other half in Canada. In regards to the bombing of the China Embassy in Yugoslavia, it is sad that there were loss of lives because of the mistake of Nato Troup, but please remember the main purpose of the bombing mission.
History has taught us that killings are tragedy of war, but sometime it is necessary. I do not agree with all the policies of the U.S. carried out throughout the world, but I do believe that when you take on this role, it doesn't always please everybody. If the U.S. does not take on the role of messing around the world affairs in the name of peace, show me who would and if someone can tell me that there would not be killing anymore in the future.

This is in regards to the previous topic, Canadians in China.
I resent the fact that everyone in the world thinks that Canadians are automatically like Americans. We aren't Yes I agree that sometimes Canadians are often bullied into following the American 's lead, however we are not the same. We are often shadowed because we aren't extreme in our ideas. We are most known for our peacekeeping missions, and kind people. In response to the bombing, I am saddened to hear about the Chinese embassy and that the US fucked up again however the Canadian government is pushing for peace proceses at this time, but the Chinese have to understand that not only have their people been affected, but also the hundreds of thousands of ethnic Albanians. The Chinese is only hearing one side of the story. Do not feel animosity towards Canadians, we only want a peaceful end, and often the people have no say in what NATO does. Everyone is preaching about the US vs China. Which countries are being selfish now, and only thinking of themselves. Recently Canadians welcomed thousands of refugees. I am proud to be Canadian we are a strong soverign nation, and we may be beside the US but we are definitely don't stand in the shadow of the US.

Is it just me or does LP apply different standards to its
home country guidebooks? The LP Guide to China is full of
scathing comments about everything from service to hygiene,
and to the supposedly strange habits of the Chinese. The LP
Guide to Australia, on the other hand, gives very bland
comments about the attractions of Sydney, for example.
Parks and buidlings are described as exquisite (dull, more
like), and there is little mention of the poor standards of
service (the aggressive rudeness of taxi and bus drivers in
particular).
When are we going to see LP apply its infamous critical
attitude to its own home base?

Just back from Tibet. Barkhor now selling Titanic T-shirts and mobile phones.
A lot of the religious artifacts I have seen there before (at the equivalent time
of year) I could find nowhere in Lhasa (or Gyantse, Amdo, Xigattse). The
Chinese have made a lot of changes there in the last few years (and a lot
more there before, of course), the most noticeable for me was between '94
and '95 with the 30th anniversary "celebrations" of the "Liberation" of the
the Tibetan People by the PLA.
Although the PLA probably massacred a few million (1/3 of the pop.) when
then Tibetan uprising started, and 80% of the monastries and holy buildings
(or Dzongs - the defence sites in the south) were mortared, it has to be said
that the life of the Tibetan people is at an all time high. The number of Tibetans
with vehicles, the aforementioned mobile phones, all sorts of electrical goods
and plans to make money under the entrepreneurial schemes allowed by the
Chinese is growing fast. The western medecines, sanitation, electricity, houses
(rebuilt of course so the Chinese have a map of the internal spaces in Lhasa),
roads, schools, & materials is truly impressive. Numerous westerners come in
hating the Chinese and they (or "Indian" Tibetans with Western passports)
stir up trouble which causes problems (imprisonment, deportation (e.g. Mongolia)
and even execution) for the Tibetans who live there. Even the Dalai Lhama
recognises Tibet cannot be free, and looks only for an atonomy for non-
'defence" side of affairs. Amnesty Intl. look only for freeing or better treatment
of the prisinors there.
So where does that get us? The west did fuck all in 1950 when there was a real
chance for change (the CIA dropped a few planeloads of leaflets in the early 50's
in uninhabited marshland explaining (in badly translated Tibetan) the need to rise up
against the evil communist Chinese (thanks for the tip USA, we would have taken it
lying down otherwise!). I think the Beastie Boys (through Grand Royal) have done a
lot for indepedent music in the US (badly needed), but they, and all the whining
Hollywood "stars", who are suddenly being hip and "campaigning" to free Tibet
(and buying quality Tibetan artifacts at US$ 100's from e.g., the Tibetan shop in
the east Village - NYC) are doing bugger all in the way of helping things. The only
thing that remains is that, like the three gorges and everywhere else, if you want to
see what it looked like before development ("development is bad" you cry from
your air-conditioned car on the expressway), you'd better get over there quickly.
In the meantime, the Tibetans seem happier than ever (in their (short) lifetimes.
It seems there is no reason to "free Tibet". Or am I missing something fundamental here?

Several friends have recently been on trips to China, and have returned bitterly disappointed. Each has been with a tour group, some with the 'offficial' Chinese travel agency. The main reason for their disappointment is that large chunks of the tours have been spent at factory shops, and other shopping venues.
Please leave aside the fact that these things COULD be inevitable if people don't travel independently, but instead choose organised group travel. Some of these friends are well-travelled and independednt thinkers, but a little intimidated by the thought of travel alone in China (for whatever reason), others were fairly elderly, and joined a 'garden tour' where the same thing happened.
Does anyone have any recent experience of travel in China, either independently, or in a group? If independent, how easy is it to get around? If group, has anyone any good experiences to relate? In particular, does anyone have experience with Peregrine tours?

Does feminism exist in Japan? (Maybe that's an oxymoron)
I'm referring to concern for women's issues, ie: equal pay,
the "glass ceiling", sexual harassment, child care, birth
control etc. After 2 years here I am no closer to
understanding why women in this 'first world country' put
up with conditions that western women refused to tolerate
30 years ago. Intelligent women friends of mine spend
their days in tight polyester uniforms serving tea while
chirping like mindless parrots. In some cases, they are
more educated than their supervisors. The "lucky" one got
married and now passes here time cooking and waiting for
her husband to come home. Her job dismissed her.
(And then there's the continued denial of reliable birth
control! Although I hear that may change...)
I enjoy living and working in this fascinating country and
I love the friendly, charming people I have met. But I
would never, ever want to wake up to be a Japanese woman.
My foreign friends all feel the same way. Isn't that a
telling sign?
I heard that the only feminist group in Japan has closed
it's doors. Are Japanese women not concerned about these
issues? I will be leaving Japan soon, so I am not directly
affected... but it saddens me that so many of the people I
care about are living such narrow lives with few
opportunities. Is this the typical western viewpoint? I
imagine men's lives are similar..? Just wondering. It
seems that quite a few of you out there know a lot about
Japan. Thanks!

Okay, I'm going to get labelled as a racist, but what the
hell...
Why do so many Asians litter? I'm not thinking of alleyways
and stuff, but in National Parks in Korea, Taiwan, Thailand
and China, I've seen just amazing amounts of garbage thrown
around. Granted, the government isn't real good at making
trashcans convienient, and yes there is littering in the
west, but either it's not this bad or it's picked up more.
I'm not an eco-freak, and I know environmental issues are
fairly new over here...but how "green" do you have to be to
realize "Gee whiz, maybe I shouldn't just throw my empty
beer cans on the beach."

Okay, IÆve been agonizing over this for a while now and
would like to hear from other travelers. I love LP. I use
LP guides on almost all of my trips around the world. But I
think LP is too harsh on China. It seems like the authors
take every opportunity to put down the Chinese (the way they
dress, eat, talk, playà) and go to great lengths to advice
readers on how to avoid Chinese in China.
Being someone who knows China, I love and hate China at the
same time, as do many others who have something or other to
do with China. Yes, the Chinese have done terrible things.
They invaded Tibet, destroyed temples and monasteries,
claim the Spratley Islands (or coral reefs depending on the
tides), eat dogs, spit, make tacky souvenirs - okay,
somebody stop me please!! But they have also contributed
greatly to human civilization - they invented paper,
printing, gunpowder, and the compass - donÆt laugh, they
did, among other things. And they are trying really hard to
enter the modern world after decades of hardline Communist
rules. The process may be painful, but "When China
wakesà" (Somebody said Napoleon never said anything like
that.)
Give them a break, and as a guide book, give your readers
the chance to decide for themselves.
BTW, LP China authors take note: If Hohhot means Blue City
in Mongolian (Mongolian speakers, please verify), then the
Chinese did not mistakenly claim it means Green City. YOU
did. The Chinese call it Qing Cheng - Blue City, as the
word "Qing" in Chinese can mean blue, green, white, black -
depending on the context. Even the ubiquitous red little
"Concise E-C C-E Dictionary" has blue, green, and black
listed under the word.

Why is it that backpackers, especially Canadian and NZers
develop and express their 'national pride' when travelling?
Australians and British appear to have more confidence in
themselves than to have toidentify what country they are
from to eveyone who comes along.
I have to laugh everytime that I see a backpack with the
Canadian flag or the now obligatory New Zealand Rugby jumper
being worn with pride by some pre-pubescent first time out
of home adventurer. Please stop it's embarrassing for it and
me highlights yourselves as easy targets to be ripped off/

What's the strangest thing you've EATEN in the N.East Asian
region?
I'd like to hear what kind of weird food delicacies are out
there. (Maybe things I might want to avoid or try in the
future..)
