Hi!
It┤s me again.
I┤m planning on going on the Yangzi River from Chongqing to
Wuhan. Is it still in use or is the tripp closed down
beacuse of the dam?
If it┤s still in use (witch I think it is) is it hard to get
tickets, wher do I buy them, can I buy them in Xi┤an, how
much do they cost?
/Jessica

Jessica: Yes, the river will stay open for boat traffic
throughout the construction period (and also after) of the
Three Gorges Dam. We went there in late 1997 and you can
read about it on my webpage at:
    http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/2869
I suggest that you are best to wait until you reach
Chongqing and can inspect the boat, but this may result in a
delay there of a day or two in the peak season around
September. We booked "blindly" in Chengdu, but should have
    waited to inspect the boat.

  2. First see the boat !! Added by: roos van rooij (roosmarc@knmg.nl)

    hai Jessica,
I just returned from a three week trip in China. We did the
"gorges" trip from Chongqing to Yuhan. We booked the tickets
some hours before the boat left (most tourist-ships leave
Chonqing in the evening, around 19.00, arriving in Yuhan 2
nights and 2 days later, around 23.00). We shopped around
in Chongqing to negotiate for the prices and to see the boat
and the huts before buying a ticket !! When you can affort,
don't hesitate to book first class, only than you have a
2-personhut(with wc and shower). Spending 50 hours on a boat
with only chinese people is oke, but spitting, smoking,
stinking people next to your bed is not !!
We paid 600 yuan each person for first class (normal price
around 900 yuan). Don't expect the boat to be a cruise ship:
there was one restaurant for classes 1 to 5 together, open 2
hours a day, at lunch and diner, no a la carte ordering. No
sun terasses, you are supposed to pay to stand on the upper
deck to see the gorges. But our hut was comfortable and had
a big window, so we had a great trip, away from the polluted
cities. But 50 hours was really enough, so we travelled from
Yuan to Wuhan by expres bus the next day (4 hours).
We met people who booked (and paid !!) boattickets in Chendu
, they didnot get what they paid for. So first look which
boat you like to stay, make a good price, there are tickets
enough. Have a nice trip !

Agree with last post. Wait till you get to Chongqing and check out the boat. 2nd class wasn't too bad but don't go lower. Many people left at Yichang I went on to Wuhan last year, arrived around 22.00 . That last day is a bit monotonous.
    Enjoy.
