Almaty-Urumqi by train

The edition of LP that I have says that the Chinese-Kazak
border is not advisable to be crossed by train.
Apparently, there is all sorts of harassment waiting for
foreigners at the border. Is this still true? Has anyone
taken the train across the border recently?
I would also appreciate hearing from anyone who has
travelled around Central Asia independently. Is it hard to
get around? Finding acommodation?
Feel free to email me if you have any info.
thanks.
