  1. Train to Chengdu Added by: Gary

From a old schedule, Train 190 departs Shanghai 1350, two
nights on train, arrives Chengdu 0912 (43hrs).
    Train 182 departs 2041, arrives 2220 (50hrs).
Easy place to get tickets is Longman Hotel next to train
station. Cost should be about 800Y soft sleeper, 400 hard
    sleeper, I forget exact amount.

I guess the flight KM SH is ~RMB1500 (in the LP, page 823
its RMB1860, but their info is often outdated).
Where you buy your ticket, whether in Shanhai, Kunming,
Chengdu, Beijing (or wherever in China) - the price is
    always the same.
Since there are no travel agents discounts anymore I just
go to the airport and catch a plane. But watch out -
flights can be quite full sometimes. To book in advance
makes sense, buy a later date, you can still fly stand-by.
To fly is nowadays quite a casual thing in China.

China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines are 2 reasonable
airlines on that route. There are others but the safety
aspect may be a bit more shaky. The 2 airlines I've
mentioned are believed to carry out airline maintainance and
    training...
If you do just turn up at the airport to buy ticket, take
cash only as they don't accept credit cards and they are
not always Bank of China branches in the terminal to
    exchange money.
