Me and two fellow architects are planning a month and a half
photographic journey through Japan on mountainbikes. We have
several literature on the topic, but some advice from
someone who has done it would help a lot.
Costs? Facilities? Bikes and equipment? Airfares? Food?
Lodging? etc...

  1. Japan cycling Added by: oimo (oimo@computer.org)

It's good idea to travel Japan by bicycle. Could you tell
me when, how long is your trip to Japan?
If you are powerful, I suggest you to go mountain roads...
You can enjoy hot springs after cycling almost everywhere
    in the mountain area...

I plan on leaving at the end of June, and spending a month
and a half there. Our itinerary is based on buildings we
want to visit, and we think it would be inteligent to buy
the JR pass; take the Shinkansen on long and pointless
journeys, and make the cycling circuits on our areas of
interest, which are the Sapporo area, the Kansai area, the
Tokyo area, the Japan sea coast line of Honshu (from Fukui
to Fukuoka) and maybe the Kagoshima area.
If you have any ideas or information you want to share, it
    would be appr

    Architect--
Your plan sounds better--there are many areas where
there is little or so space to ride a bike on the shoulder,
without nearly getting plowed off the street completely by
some prick in his new hot car, plus 80% of Japan is
mountainous and even the strongest person would find it
too much day in and day out.
Remember though that you need to get the JR Pass before
    you come to Japan.
Also you'll be coming in the rainy season, which means
you might face a lot of rain....not much fun on a bike....

  4. Bike in Hokkaido Added by: Phat Dave

Honshu and Kyushu islands will be in the middle of a rainy
spell in June. Hokkaido would be cooler, dryer and the
    roads should be less busy.

  5. rain? bah! Added by: muddymudskipper (derrymcdonell@hotmail.com)

go for it. the rain will be warm and not really
uncomfortable, but it will slow you down a great deal. i
cycled around shikoku in the rain and the scenery was
probably some of the best in japan, so if it fits into your
plans, take a ferry there and follow a coastal route. it's
pretty much flat the whole way and there are also some nice
beaches to rent surfboards at if you're hankering for a
    day off the bikes.

  6. Try Shimanami Added by: Keigo (fukatsu@enjoy.ne.jp)
[Timestamp: Thu 20 May, 23:08 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Shimanami Kaido(lit. means Island Ocean Road) just opened
this May. This is the third road(bridges) connecting
Honshu-mainland with Shikoku, but the only way you can go by
bicycle. The road is from Onomichi, eastean Hiroshima pref.
to Imabari(north of Matsuyama), consists of ten bridges
spanning many islands in Seto Inland Sea. If weather is
good, beautiful ocean and islands are warranted.

  7. Great idea guys Added by: marro

Forget about the rain and the bikes, we are going to be in
Japan parting for the summer and i would like to invite you
guys to meet some girls. Then you can use your JR pass and
    travel around watching the buildings.
