i'm going to be in asia for 3 months and want to get a
temporary web-based email account, like hotmail, but i don't
want to get hotmail per se, because i hear that it's slow,
unreliable, and otherwise way too bloody popular. does
anyone else have recommendations on the other companies to
use, ones that are dependable and accessable from asia
without a long wait?

I like yahoo. Easy to use, and you can set it up to access
your regular email account at home while you're on the
road. Others probably do this, too.
One thing in hotmail's favour is that in some countries,
service providers start with all sites blocked, and only
unblock them on request (thus pretty much blocking out porn
or political sites etc). Hotmail's so popular you never
really find anywhere where someone hasn't unblocked it
before you.
FYI, hotmail may be blocked b/c of the word "hot"
I've had no problems with Rocketmail-- which is now the
same as Yahoo, I think. Seems faster and more reliable than
Hotmail (and isn't Microsoft AFAIK). I have accessed it
from China and Taiwan.
I've just come back from three months travelling -
Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Vietnam and Indonesia
and had no problems with Hotmail. I was also able to access
my home email via Hotmail.
I was quite happy with it, from my experience.
i have had problems with hotmail. Sometimes their server is
verrrry slow, which can be a problem when you are paying by
the minute. I prefer yahoo. Good service, very little
spam.
I have accessed my yahoo mail account in china, tibet, hong
kong, the phillipines, nepal, thailand, and japan with no
problems at all. Most other people i've met in asia also
agree that it is reliable.
