Two countries, one system? I think not.

Is it just me or does LP apply different standards to its
home country guidebooks? The LP Guide to China is full of
scathing comments about everything from service to hygiene,
and to the supposedly strange habits of the Chinese. The LP
Guide to Australia, on the other hand, gives very bland
comments about the attractions of Sydney, for example.
Parks and buidlings are described as exquisite (dull, more
like), and there is little mention of the poor standards of
service (the aggressive rudeness of taxi and bus drivers in
particular).
When are we going to see LP apply its infamous critical
attitude to its own home base?

I too think that the LP China is a bit negative in some
aspects. But on the other hand - I don't believe everything
    I read.
I have the 1998 LP China and I will send them a correction
on 50 or so points (mainly only updates, only a few things
    that are very wrong).
The best way is to go there and jusge for yourself, or?

  5. It┤s fun reading, what others think about your country Added by: Claudia

    jiang zemin,
you┤re right. I observed the same difference between
guidebooks on Germany (my country) written by "foreigners"
    and books by Germans.
Of course it depends on the perspective: If you are from the
same country you write about, and if you write for tourists
from the very same country (eg. for other Germans visiting
Bavaria) you can assume, that your readers have the same
mentality and the same standards (ideas of hygiene, conduct,
etc...), and that they probably know the sites from TV. So
you don┤t have to "warn" them about everything.

    I don┤t think it┤s a problem having different perspectives.
I think it┤s fun reading foreign guidebooks on my country.
    A lot to laugh....
