Where to go in China?

Hi,
I planning a 3-months-trip this summer (mid-june to
mid-september) and I┤d like to visit China as long
as possible (depends on the visa). Where should I go? What
places do you recommend? Shall I combine China -
North-Vietnam or China-Tibet-Nepal (I fear that they won┤t
let me stay in China the full three months...)
Can anybody recommend an interesting route?
Are there any women out there who experienced travelling
alone in China?
Please write, I will answer every email. Thanks for your
help
Claudia

  1. that's a big question Added by: sieg

Hi Claudia, that's something bi you are asking. First:
travelling as a single women is not much of a problem in
China. Although I am male (und Belgier), my female friends
tell me it's really no problem. Of course, if you wear
really sexy clothes and try to attract men, you might get
in trouble. But omst women don't have any hassles.
As for your destinations; you can probably the full three
months, they have 3-month visas, but it really depends on
what you like. Here is a route to give you an idea
    (supposing you arrive in Beijing):
    1. Beijing --- 4/5 days
    2. Xi'an --- 3/4 days
    3. Lanzhou - Xiahe - Lanzhou - Dunhuang - Turpan - Urumqi -
    Kashgar - Urumqi
    or
    Chengdu - Tibet - Chengdu
    --- 2/3 weeks
(or both, add another 2/3 weeks)
    4. Chengdu --- 2/3 days
    5. Kunming (1 day)
    6. Dali and Lijiang --- 5 - 10 days (I'd go for 10!)
    7. Kunming - Xishuangbanna --- 3 - 7 days
    8. Kunming (1 day)
    9. Guilin - Yangshuo --- 3 - 5 days (some people stay
    forever!)
    10. Shanghai - Wuxi - Suzhou and Hangzhou --- 10 days
    Other possibilities:
    * Three Gorges trip --- go for local boats, they are more
fun, if less comfortable (3-5 days)
    * Guangzhou (2 days, but not so much to see)
    * Mountains: Emeishan, Lushan, Huangshan
    * Xiamen and Fuzhou.
What I think are musts are:
    * Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou.
    * Xiahe, Lijiang, Dali, Xishuangbanna
    * Tibet: Lhasa, Gyantse, Everest region
Hope this helped you out a little. Use the Lonely Planet to

  2. Check out Yangshuo Added by: benny (benbyron@hotmail.com)

just to say definitely go to Yangshuo (i would only spend
one day in Guilin and visit Seven Star Park if only for the
hilarious gramatically incorrect signs), as we extended our
visas for another month just to stay in this one
town/village. if you want me to send photos to give a taster
just mail me. also i can recommend a guide who has email -
for something ridiculous like 10 USD for a whole day she'll
take you along cycle paths around the area, along the Li
River and to Moon Hill. Her address is
    Brightmoonsally@hotmail.com
