I lived in Shanghai till last fall and had also heard of Hanghzhou hiking. A friend of mine went to Moganshan, where many early-century expats went to escape the Hangzhou and Shanghai summers, last autumn. She said that although it wasn't world-class hiking by far, it was a nice escape from Shanghai. Wooded hillsides, the sounds of nature that you can't hear in Shanghai, crumbling old villas, and mellow locals. You can get there by bus (and train?) from Hangzhou. It's not a daytrip from Shanghai, and would probably require 2 nites unless you have a car, in which case you could probably do it in 1.
