I need a Chinese visa, got a Canadian passport and am
living in Japan. Is the embassy in Japan the best way to
get the visa? It is a little expensive. I heard you can
go through a travel agent as well. Thanks.

I asked the same question about 2 months ago and found that
there are 2 options for us Cdns wanting a China visa:
-go through the consulate/embassy if there's one near you
and you can drop off and pick up in person..I think the
cost is 7500yen but they wanted an 'invitation', in
Chinese, plus a million other forms...
-or go with a travel agency who will charge a processing
fee for handling the visa, but will save you the trip into
    the city to do it.
I called around the agencies in my area of Japan and found
that the standard price was around 11 500 yen. Pretty
expensive. I ended up going with the Fukuoka branch of the
CITS, they had the lowest flight prices and took care of
the visa too. Their number is 092 441 8180. (Jp only)
But if you find a cheaper deal, let me know!

I was in the same position as you were last fall. I found
the easiest thing to do was to go to Hong Kong and get it
there. It's MUCH cheaper and takes only a couple of days.

There's a CITS in Tokyo but I'm not sure how much it costs.

    It's near the Shibuya station.

I got a chinese visa last august for (about) 6500 yen at the
chinese embassy. I did not need anything other than my
passport and it only took one business day. The visa
section is only open 9am to 12pm and is a 10 minute walk
from roppongi or hiroo (hibiya line) in moto-azabu. The
staff was friendly and helpful and I didn't have to pay a
    fee to an agency.
