I am trying to find out if it is possible for CHinese
people on the Mainland are able to travel to Australia. My
friend wants to go to Australia, but cannot afford a tour
group, she wants to go independantly because she has
friends there. Can anyone help? Please email me if you have
any knowledge of this topic! THANKS, and HAPPY TRAVELS!

The US has hard conditions for such case. But European
countries are better. I know a Chinese who succeeded to go
Australia with an invitition from her sister-in-law.
Anyway she should try let her Aus friends find out if they
need to provide a bank statement or guarantee for her when
asking for a visa.
This year during spring festival I went to Australia
togehter with my Chinese wife and Chinese daughter.
Go to an Australian embassy or consulate in China and
they will tell you the details.
As far as I remember, you must provide:
- a valid Chinese passport (of course)
- a detailed travel itenary
- a letter from your company (working unit), confirming
that you are allowed to go on holidays
- a confirmation of your income
- an international health insurance
You don't need an invitation from an friend or
relative in Australia, if your income is
regarded sufficient.
Travellers from China and other countries (except
New Zealand) need the same documents.
To the best of my knowledge, the first thing your friend
needs is a private passport. If she does not have one yet,
she won't make it to Australia any time soon...
If she has a passport, then there are 2 ways she can get a
visa (apart from joining a tour as you mentioned) :
- If she has relatives in Australia who invite her.
- If she is officially invited by an Australian company for
a business trip.
Good luck !
For what it's worth, if I remember correctly, Australia was
recently elevated to an officially "approved tourist
destination" by the Chinese government.
Australia is not a European country as you seem to imply it
is!
Bruce, she means 'western'. Chill out and relax. Don't jump
down people's throats so quickly.
