higher market penetration and reduced marketing costs.
"The Internet has made it possible to promote and sell directly online. The
lower cost of online sales has allowed MacSourcery to cut the price of its

BOOMASoft Ships BOOMA WebForms
SANDY, Utah (Oct. 7, 1998) - BOOMASoft today announced it has begun

And they can't afford the time, money and resources required to have them
created. But their Web sites need forms to be more than online brochures.
"BOOMA WebForms changes that. Using BOOMA WebForms, anyone can create Web
forms tied to databases in just minutes. No longer will they have to hire

Subject: [ANN] Monaco Tuner 1.2b3 available - please test
Due to a bug, Monaco Tuner 1.2b2 didn't work with Mac OS versions less than
8.5. Monaco Tuner 1.2b3 has been tested under Mac OS 8.1 and Mac OS 8.5.
Under Mac OS 8.1 and earlier, it should act just like Monaco Tuner 1.1.x.
I think this will be the last beta of Monaco Tuner 1.2b3, so I would
appreciate it if someone would make it fail and send me a bug report. :)
Under Mac OS 8.5, Monaco Tuner 1.2b3 allows you to substitute the 9 pt

are disabled under Mac OS 8.5. Providing the other features is difficult

This one function ("substitute for Monaco 9") is the only Monaco Tuner
function I usually use.

WebDoubler Update Corrects Sherlock Queries
November 6, 1998 -- Maxum Development Corp. announced today the release of
a free WebDoubler plug-in that corrects a bug in Sherlock, the new Web
searching system found in Apple's Mac OS 8.5. Apple has acknowledged that
Sherlock can display error messages, instead of search results, when using
an HTTP proxy server such as Maxum's recently released WebDoubler.
The new plug-in for WebDoubler intercepts the bad Sherlock queries and
corrects them as they are sent to the search engines. Not only does the
plug-in allow Sherlock queries to be processed by WebDoubler, but it
reconstructs the query so that upstream proxies and host servers will also
function correctly. WebDoubler, which runs on Mac OS, is the first HTTP
proxy server to actively detect and correct the Sherlock proxy bug.

[NPL] THE BLOCK 2.1
Marc Mennigmann releases THE BLOCK 2.1
Iserlohn, Germany -- November 01, 1998 -- Marc Mennigmann today announced
the release of version 2.1 of THE BLOCK, a popular password security
application for Macintosh computers.
What is THE BLOCK?
==================
THE BLOCK is a powerful password protection system for Macintosh computers.
Unlike other password protection systems, it will not accept real
passwords. To log in to a computer protected by THE BLOCK you need to go
through a two-step process. First you need to type a Password Key, which is
a key combination similar to the Finder's Copy or Paste shortcuts
[command+c] or [command+v]. The second step is to click with the mouse on
the shutdown button on the on-screen dialog or, depending on the
preferences you set, to press the "esc" key on your keyboard.
A big part of THE BLOCK's security comes from the illusion that a real
password is needed. If intruders are not aware of how THE BLOCK works, they
will always choose the wrong approach...

Subject: [ANN] The Ultimate Macintosh Random-Number Generator
Just a brief note to let those interested know that source code is

general-purpose pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) publically available.
See
http://www.geocities.com/~mikemclaughlin/software/URandomLib.html
The C++ class, URandomLib, was described in the October, 1998 issue of

programs as well. It is Macintosh-specific since the low-level routine
generating the random output is coded in optimized assembly language
(conditional compilation blocks for PowerPC and 68K). The cited URL is the
official URandomLib homepage and contains a link to the MacTech ftp site.
The underlying PRNG algorithm, known as "Ultra", was published, and
rigorously tested, by Marsaglia and co-workers at Florida State Univ. This

[NPL] HTML Elements Compendium
The Compendium of HTML Elements/htmlcompendium.org
Press Release regarding our update to revision 7.
October 26, 1998, Oxford-on-Rideau, Canada
I am please to present the 7th revision of the Compendium of HTML
Elements. Revision 7 contains many refinements and much expanded
information that will be of interest to the web authoring community.
New Format
Revision 7 uses a completely new format that retains the hierarchy
of previous releases but with faster access times and easier and faster
movement throughout the site. We have moved from tables-based formatting to
Cascading Style Sheets, for the most part, Level 2.
Downloadable Fonts
We are now using the Bitstream downloadable fonts to compliment the
move to CSS2. The texts can be read faster. As well, the downloadable fonts
aid in establishing the hierarchy that is so necessary with large amounts
of information like this. A big plus is the demonstration of downloadable
fonts themselves. The entire process is described in full....

Traffic Report Release Notes B30
Version: 1.0.b30
Date: Monday, October 26, 1998
Author: Brian Lusby
New Features in This Version
TR now lets you specify which referrers you'd like included in the reports.
You can include the internals, externals, or both. This just affects the
Referrer reports and doesn't exclude a referrer's entire log entry (as is
the case when using a filter). Settings for this addition are in the Log
Prefs. Referrers that contain the home domain you specify can be included
(for reporting on internal referrers) or excluded (for reporting on
external referrers). For example, to exclude www.apple.com and
www2.apple.com you'd specify your home domain as apple.com and both would
be excluded.
The Referer Stats report now includes visit counts and visits' average
length. Want to know how many visits you've gotten from Yahoo!, Excite or
any other referrer category you've established? This report will tell you.
The Day-by-Day Stats, Primary Domain and Secondary Domain...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Catara(tm) Software Releases MiniCalendar 2.1
Contact: Steven Marcotte catara@idir.net
Lawrence, KS October 24, 1998 Catara(tm) Software today announced the
release of MiniCalendar 2.1, an update of their popular calendar program.
What is MiniCalendar 2.1?
MiniCalendar is a small and elegant system calendar. Its main goal is to
provide the user with a basic calendar for any month between January 1582
and December 29940.
MiniCalendar is not designed to replace full function date books, rather it
is designed to complement such programs. Programs such as Claris Organizer
or Now Up-To-Date excel at managing appointments and dates, but are clumsy
when it comes to looking up what day your birthday is going to fall on next
year. MiniCalendar fills this niche nicely. Since MiniCalendar is small and
easy enough to use, you will want to leave it running so you will always
have access to a calendar.
As you'd expect from Catara, MiniCalendar is robust,...

Subject: [ANN] Raven 1.5
I'm happy to announce that Raven 1.5 is available. You can find it at
(http://www.halcyon.com/www3/jesjones/Raven/Raven.html).
Raven is a free C++ application framework similar to PowerPlant and MacApp.
The changes in 1.5 are as follows:
Known Bugs:
* Stack crawl doesn't have symbol names if virtual memory is on.
* DTS has confirmed a bug in the 1.0.1 Appearance Extension: if a window's
procID is kWindowModalDialogProc or kWindowAlertProc the window is not
actually modal (ie the user can switch out of the app).
* When using native floating windows the NavServices dialogs don't activate
until they're clicked (OS 8.5f2). Note that this is reproducible with the
Nav Services sample code.
+ CustomGetFile seems to hang if InitFloatingWindows is called (OS 8.5f2).
+ The SIOUX window won't drag if a floater is visible (this is a SIOUX bug).

AppMaker #11 Beta Released
Grantham, NH - October 22, 1998 - Bowers Development has released Beta
modules for the upcoming AppMaker #11. All AppMaker users with a current
subscription are invited to try the new modules. Information and a request

More than a GUI Builder
The theme in AppMaker #11 is to do more of the application logic for you.
Code that you would have had to write by hand, AppMaker now generates for
you. You design your user interface and design the data items, then connect
them. AppMaker generates the skeleton, the sinews, and much of the muscle
of the application logic in addition to generating resources and source
code for the user interface.
Major new features
* Supports array data - in particular an array of pointers to other data
objects. An array signals when its content is changed.
* Generates file I/O to read/write any data Members that are specified as
"persistent." This includes array Members.
* Adds a custom...

[MD1] MPW and Mac OS 8.5 issues
From: http://www.devworld.apple.com/dev/tools/mpw-tools/important.html
as reported by MacInTouch.
MPW and Mac OS 8.5
A serious bug has been discovered in the MPW Shell and ToolServer which can
cause a Macintosh running Mac OS 8.5 to experience errors and File Manager
operational failures. The bug exists in all versions prior to version 3.5d4
which was released on 9/9/98. The problem occurs when the Shell and/or
ToolServer are executing a sequence of tools (such as during a build
cycle), and the Mac OS 8.5 Finder is used to start a file and/or folder
copy operation. When both operations are occuring simultaneously, the
Finder will often start reporting File Not Open (-38) and/or Param (-50)
errors. When it does so, the MPW operation will also start experiencing
File Manager errors.
The bug has been fixed in version 3.5d4 of the Shell and ToolServer.
However, for those people who prefer to use Golden Master versions of
software, we have also released new Golden Master versions (v3.4.3)...

Faster, faster, faster...Web Performance Tuning
Sebastopol, CA--"When I told people I was writing a book called 'Web
Performance Tuning', the usual response I got was that the title should be
'Web Server Performance Tuning'", explains author Patrick Killelea, "But
when you're desperate to improve performance, you can become much more
creative about finding other parts of the web that you can tune."
Killelea's just-released book, "Web Performance Tuning" (O'Reilly, $32.95)
thoroughly covers tuning web server software, but it goes beyond the
server, uncovering ways to get optimal performance from a browser, tuning
the hardware (on both the server and browser ends) and maximizing the
capacity of the network itself.
As the World Wide Web (also jokingly referred to as the World Wide Wait)
matures, more users, more data, and more features have slowed down servers
and the loading of web pages to a crawl. Increased traffic has

[NPL] ProcessWatch
From: Charles Kefauver (ckefauver@ibacom.es)
Subject: ANNOUNCE: FREE ProcessWatch Webmaster utility
I have always thought that the "About this Mac" window that Apple provides
with the Finder, gives too little information, and takes up way too much
screen real state. Therefore, I have created ProcessWatch as the simplest
possible replacement for that window.
We currently have 8 Macs running different kind of services (internet and
otherwise), and since we already have most of our screens filled up with
with logging windows, our main concern was creating the smallest possible
window we could. We also wanted the program to take up as little CPU power
as possible.
ProcessWatch is PostCardWare. This means that although it is totally free,
we ask that if you decide to kept the program, you send me an email message
with your favorite picture, or if you prefer, send me a traditional
Postcard via regular mail.
You can download it from:

[NPL] VSE HTML Turbo 1.0
VSE HTML TURBO 1.0 - ACCELERATE YOUR WEB SITE
Bonn, 15. October 1998 - Voget Selbach Entertainment (VSE) announced today
the release of VSE HTML Turbo 1.0 for Macintosh, Power Macintosh and iMac.
VSE HTML Turbo 1.0 is a new tool that optimizes HTML documents so that they
become much smaller and load much quicker into Web browsers such as
Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The optimization does
not change the way web browsers will display the document.
BENEFITS
By using VSE HTML Turbo, Web browsers will display Web pages as fast as
possible. Web surfers will receive Web pages quicker and text will be
displayed almost immediately after requesting a Web site.
The quicker a Web site loads, the better will be the visitors impression of
the site, the company and the product.
VSE HTML Turbo does more than just cutting off some bytes of HTML
documents. Because page retrievals take less time to complete, the average
number of simultaneous connections is reduced. That means...
