FOTO is a non-profit, membership based organization, whose role is to support Griffith Observatory and its mission of being a vital community and international centerpiece of learning, discovery and inspiration about astronomy. (See http://www.griffithobs.org/foto.html for more information.)
In this time of budget cuts to public schools, FOTO has taken on the nearly $200,000 in costs to operate the "School Field Trip" program at the Griffith Observatory. This program targets 5th graders and gives a comprehensive package of transportation, pre-visit and post-visit learning materials, and on-site programs at the Observatory, all designed to educate and inspire these kids.
MacTech Conference has chosen this program as its charity for the conference.
On Thursday night, the second night of the conference, MacTech Bowl will take place to help raise funds for this charity. Through team sponsorship, MacTech Conference attendees take part in a bowling contest. There is no cost to the attendees bowling. The sponsor of the winning team gets a trophy, and the high bowler in the contest gets a trophy.
Trophies are cool -- bragging rights are better. And, that's almost as good as the cool bowling shirts with the team sponsor on the back. It's all in good fun - and it's a way for us to raise money for the Observatory's program.
