Hello everybody.

I have a WANG WLTC laptop computer (circa 1980's). I do not want to sell it for cash, but I'd be willing to trade it for another unusual portable/laptop.

Here's some specs on it:

-NEC V30 (8086) processor
-10MB Winchester Disk
-External Centronics-type SCSI port (HD is also SCSI)
-Built-in thermal printer, with roll/cut sheet capabilities
-512K RAM
-RS232-C Serial port

There is, however, a problem with the internal (regulating/switching) power supply. It runs the computer, but keeps blowing a capicitor. It also needs an external P/S and battery. The battery is 10 sub-cells (with a resistor - I have a schematic). A Tyco 20VDC racing transformer (the kind for the little car/track sets) will run it.

I had an offer to trade it for an IBM PC-Radio, but I never got a reply. If anyone has one of these, or any other odd or unusual laptops/portables, and would be willing to trade, let me know.

I recently got a used PC - AT that somebody was throwing out and it worked fine.
My CMOS batery broke and my computer now does not know what type of hard disk it has.
Becouse of this, my computer tells my to run setup and then goes right into BASIC.
What I want to know is: 1. How do I enter setup on my PC - AT 2. What type of hard disk does it
have so that I can identify it in setup.

P.S. My A: Drive seemes to be broken.
so I cant use a system disk.

I have another problem. I got an old Zenith data systems 8088. I has a hard drive but the boot info is messed up.
I can't seem to get it to boot from a floppy. Any one know how?

I'm looking for info about the Wang WLTC labtop dated from
1987. It has no diskdrive and I want to use one of it's
ports. It has a RS232 port but with Fastlynx I can't force
a bootstrap(not IBM compatible ?). There is also a floppy
port on it but I don't know the pinouts, it uses a connector
like the one of a printer but then with 50 pins.

Hi, A co-worker of mine gave me her Tandy 1000 TL/3 to upgrade for her.
She thinks I can work miracles. Everything on it is proprietary. I would like to be
able to add a 340mb hard drive to replace her 20mb one & I would like to be able
to add more memory in the hopes of possibly upgrading her OS from DOS 3.3 to
DOS 6.22 & maybe Windows 3.1. According to her manuals & other information I
have been able to gleen from the net, the maximum amount of memory that can be
added is under 1 meg of chip RAM and the biggest hard drive would be a 40mb.
Do you know if there is any way to get around this configuration? Also, I have been
unable to find out what kind of RAM chips to look for. I have several old memory
boards but All I can get from Tandy is their own proprietary number & I already
assume that to buy memory from Tandy would cost more than the system is worth.
Any assistance in this area that you could provide would be most appreciated.

I'd like to put together a high-end 386 or a low-end 486 for my sister who is attending grad school and would use it for typing papers and communicating via e-mail, however limited. I have a bunch of spare parts I plan to put into it -- monitor, sound card, modem, keyboard, etc. -- but I'm missing the most essential element: The case, including the motherboard, CPU and hard drive. This doesn't have to be anything fancy, but if someone has an old beast gathering dust in a closet that they'd like to sell or trade, drop me an e-mail with the specs. I'm hoping to have it all built up for her by December 1. Prefably, I'd like it at least be the bare minimum to run Windows 95 -- 386 with 8MB RAM -- or at least upgradable to the bare minimum. I have a Compaq Portable 386 that Id like to get going a bit better than it
is now.

Here's what I need for it:

RAM - It uses special RAM that is about as long as a 72-pin chip, bit is
only about 1/2" high, and doesn't have the notch in the middle. I
currently have 2 MB, but would like to get it up to the max (16 MB?)

Modem (I think that's what the slot's for) - There's a little knock-out
under the disk drives, and a big open space inside the case, and a
connector. That's really all I can say about that.

Manual - Any have a manual that they'd want to get rid of (or photocopy)?

I have an old NCR 286 personal computer that I am trying to
get running for a friend that wants to use it as a word
processor.
There is a program called CarWatch that boots up right from
the beginning(obviously in the autoexec). I can get into
the setup, but I haven't been able to get the machine to
boot from the floppy. It seems to go directly to the 5 1/2
floppy and won't try to boot from the 3 1\2. Do you have
any suggestions on how to get to the autoexec to change it.

I have a Tandy PC-6, which is a glorified scientific calculator with some kind of BASIC installed. Problem is, I have no manuals of any kind. I can enter a simple calculation in its direct mode, but have NO idea how to get a program in there or what commands I can use. Anyone that can help will get a HUGE and eternal "THANK YOU!" :-)

I got an Amiga A500 at a garage sale for $5 with 2 garbage bags full of accessories and disks. I have a SunRize PerfectVision and its companion color splitter. It connects to the parallel port and has video inputs all over the place.
In the manual for the PerfectVision, it says "It is possible to connect this to an IBM-PC with the use of the proper drivers." What are the proper drivers and where do I get them?
Ok, second question: Can I put some Mac SE roms in this and run mac programs on the faster graphics cards, or will the ROMS not talk to the ASICs?
Third and final question: Can I use my HP DeskJet 600C with the Amiga? The LPT pinouts show 12 volts (!) on some of the pins. Wil it print if I clip the voltage carrying pins?

I inherited a Epson Apex 100 and a bunch of 5.25" floppies. Any chance that someone out there can answer a couple of questions. 1) How can I view the floppies? They are not readable on a DOS, Win95, WinNT or Mac that I have. 2) The monitor uses a PS2 type connection and I would like to hook up my monitor but haven't found the right connector/adapter to do the job, any clues? I am part of a group starting a non-virtual Computer Museum. we are specializing in items from 1975 through the end of the IBM 286 era. We receive donations and buy a few items, but they are unifirmly lacking software and manuals. Are there sources like clubs or businesses we can contact to learn more about, and obtain copies of software and documentation on items from this era? we are particularly interested in the Commodore, TRS, Apple, early Mac, and early IBM lines. Any guidance will be greatlyappreciated.

Looking for setup and troubleshooting disk set for an HP 486s/20 Vectra series. This is a three? disk set, HP part# D2165-60007.

I'm the lowly computer tech at an elementary school. I have an AppleIIGS network with a MacSE30 server and two computers won't come up on the network.
The server seems lists them as available, and they seem to look for the server before finally defaulting to the floppy drives but I can't figure out what is wrong.
This problem came up over the summer after some cables were disconnected during cleaning. I've checked all the cables and settings and they all appear to be ok.
Anybody know about this type of network?? thanks in advance

I have some old 5.25in FDDs with data on that I would like to retrieve, some program data, some Wordwise and Interword documents.

I remember, a number of years ago, seeing an article naming a program whcih ran on PC but emulated BBC, and even allowed the old DFS format disks to be read.

I have an old 386 with 5.25in drive ready and waiting. Does anybody know of shareware or freeware that will do the job, please, or does anyone wish to donate an old piece of software. My search of the net has not revealed anything useful yet.

I've just upgraded my Texas Instruments Travelmate 4000M to windows 95. I now have two problems
1) Windows won't recognise the CDROM (When the PC is connected to the docking station).
2) Only one speaker works.

HELP !!! I posted this before, and got a system disk (finally) but NOT a complete copy of DOS 5.0. I need the stuff like EDLIN, DRIVER.SYS, etc and of course SYS.COM
Can SOMEONE send me a COMPLETE copy of DOS 5.0 or 3.3 on 5.25 LOW density disks? (360 K)

SECOND request, does ANYONE have a COPY of AOL for DOS? I cant get it from them anymore, I am told its Version 2.0 or 2.5, also on LOW desity diskettes.(360 K)I need it for my granddaughters computer to get some files to it via email.

I am trying to get my grandfather's Acer 486 DX-100 linked up to an ISP/internet..
However, the BIOS release for this computer (2.0) will only support 9600 BPS which is far too slow to get any enjoyment
out of the internet.
I tried to see if there was an updated bios, but apparently it isn't a software-loaded BIOS..
Acer says that they didn't make an updated BIOS for this computer.
I heard that (somehow) the modem can be connected through a network card or a sound card (?) in order to bypass the BIOS..

Does anyone have any suggestions??

I have a Tandy 1000SL. I am in need of a keyboard and a printer cable for my TRS-80 WPS-410. If you know where I can locate one I would appreciate any help.

I recently picked up a Dauphin 1050 laptop with a broken hard drive. The hard drive was set to "disabled" in the BIOS. I wanted to see if it would do anything at all, so I enabled it. Now, not only won't the system boot, it never gives me a prompt to get back into the BIOS Setup! How do I get back in? (I haven't tried disconnecting the battery yet -- which brings me to another question. I opened the case and found what is presumably the CMOS battery, but there's also a board plugged into something resembling a SIMM socket that has what appears to be a watch-type battery on it. What's that?)

FACIT PEN PLOTTER

I use an old 'Facit' 6 pen plotter to ink-out cad diagrams for reproduction use. Although this plotter is quite unlike an HP7475a in appearance, this is the driver that it emulates and I have used it ok over the years using a serial cable I made up and 'Easycad' dos software programme.

I just upgraded my motherboard from a 486 to a faster pentium one, and now the com1 port is taken up with my modem and I have had to connect the plotter to com2 - I have adjusted all settings, bios setup, software setup, and Mr Gates' 95 settings in His device manger, but the thing will not plot at all.

One option is to run the plotter from an old computer but not convenient. I could export drawing files as DXF, or even print to my laser printer connected to the parallel port. However, I need the plots in real ink since they reproduce so much better, and the plotter makes a soothing 'chuntering' noise as it draws which is so enchanting.

Facit seems to be very out of date, and I can't link it to a manufacturer - although pens were made by Mitsubishi.

Any ideas on connecting old plotter appreciated.

Needed: IBM 4 Meg True Parity SIMMS (72-pin). Or, if someone has any RAM chips for a PS/2 L40sx laptop, that would work, too. I just upgraded the HD to a 120 meg (from 60), and am trying to get the RAM above 2 meg.

I'm curious about what results in best performance from your PC--especially an older one--specifically, what the actual bottleneck is in a given situation.

My question is: What is the actual megabit/sec throughput for any given device?

All I've been able to determine so far from the Web is
1) 10-Base-2 thin ethernet peer-to-peer is theoretically capable of about 10Mb/sec but more realistically transfers data at about 2-3Mb/sec.
2) A UDMA EIDE HD runs at about 5Mb/sec.

-How fast can a 16-bit ISA network card put data through itself?
-What's slower megabit-wise: the motherboard or I/O board's HD port, the HD's own controller, or the actual r/w action?
-How about a 16-bit ISA video card versus a PCI one?
-What about the CPU-to-memory bus?
-Or the memory chips themselves?

I'm interested in actual throughput numbers, if available. I know they're somewhat dependent on the system the device is installed in, but there must be generally applicable ranges.

Rails for a Dell 5.25" drive bay. Dell's original part number is 25102 and is molded into the rails. Many of the 486 series uses these, they are fairly normal except for a lock tab in front that locks the drive into place without screws. If you have a unit with some you know what I mean.

Well I see that people are having fun again....writing useless bits and trivial nonsense. Tom gets all of this through his email and can actually track most of them to the origin. Why is this necessary? Sure there are stupid people out there (I'm delaing with one from eBay myself at the monent that happens to use this post as well) but it serves no purpose but to cramp everyone's style to poke fun, ridicule or otherwise defame someone's help that is offered. If you *feel* someone is dead wrong, write them in a diplomatic way, or just ignore it as junk. Let the person that needs the information decide if he or she wants to try out the advice and risk the solitude and safety of their classic machine. If someone posts a screwdriver hint and you don't think it's good advice, then don't do it to your own equipment. I personally like having the line here as I've traded and sold a few items, helped many people that would otherwise throw the machine out, or even gotten help myself. This is more or less a club here that you only need to type the address of to join. Be a good member and get along so that all of us can benefit. The only stupid question is the one that's not asked, and the only stupid response is the one intended to make the writer look stupid as well.

Hi, I put a note on the board as I needed an a.c. adapter for what I thought was a 286 Compaq laptop. After contacting Compaq they say the beast I have is Compaq LTE Lite 386 which is good news for me (better spec.) but still lacking the power supply!

I have this old IBM XT286 model#5126, it worked fine until I had to replace the battery. Now I get the 161-systems option not set(run setup) but I can't get it to do anything at all. i have an old zenith laptop model zwl-184-97 i haev the 720k disks and dos for it but it won't boot off the disd at startup it only checks the HD then when i use alt+ctrl+enter to enter the bios i try the boot from disk option i think swithches next to the optional 8087 co-processor are messed up #3 is the only one off i have never been able to access the HD i found the computer so i know onthing about it when i try to acces the 1.44"disk drive it says I/O error please reinsert disk and try again if any body knows what all the switches do on the bottom let me know and how to get the disk runnnig so i can format the hd and put the stuff on it i have the dos.

I have an XT type computer, Epson Equity 1+, that I use as
a word processor. The battery that powers the date/time clock
and CMOS died. I replaced the battery and the clock runs but
the computer will not boot from the hard drive. A few times
after I played around with the dip switches it accessed the
hard drive and booted up, but after turning the machine off
it failed to recognize the hard drive the next time it tried
to boot up. I would be eternally grateful for any help in
resolving this problem.

This has become one of the most aggrivating computer problems I have ever experienced, and I really want to fix it. If anyone has any information, I would really appreciate it.

Here's the deal: I have a Gateway 2000 486SX-33 with a soldered Intel chip. However, it comes with an empty ZIF socket. Now I want to get one of two processors working there -- either an Intel 486DX2-66 or an AMD 486DX2-50. Gateway tech support is pretty useless, so I'd really like to hear from someone who successfully enabled the overdrive processor in this machine. Any help would be very much appreciated!

I recieved a Macintosh Computer in return for some electronic work. I dont know anything about Macs at all and I wonder if any kind soul could spare a few minutes to give me some info. The back says it is a "MACINTOSH PLUS 1Mb", Model no: M0001A. It has ps/2?? ports on the back with icons of a phone(modem??) and printer. Also 19pin port(female) and a 25 pin port(female) and mouse port. There is a keyboard and a number pad which connects at the front. and a floppy drive(1.44mb??). Thats about all I can describe. Apon powerup, a pic of a floppy comes up with a flashing question mark. I am guessing it is the mac version of "invalid system disk". could this have a HDD? and what O/S could I install? What sort of commands does a mac have? any helpful urls?

Have a Dauphin 1050 and can't locate setup info, what
config is for hard drive, floppy. Don't want to have to tear it apart.

Still have one Zenith ZWS-248-62 desktop unit to find a good home for. It's a 286-12 destop unit with 2 external 5.25" bays, 4 internals. This is the planar version, meaning that the bottom board is only a slot board and that the processor is on a card. It comes ready to run except for no hard or floppy drives. Has way over 1mb RAM, serial and 2 printer ports, mono graphics card (can be chahnged to CGA, EGA, VGA easily w/ common boards), great power supply, excellent case, etc. Weighs in the vicinty of 22 lbs without drives.

All you do is add a floppy, MFM hard drive, keyboard, monitor and GO! Will run Windows easily.

The last one I have - need $10 plus cheapest shipping for it w/o drives, $15 with 1.2mb floppy + shipping. Could make it a complete system with hard drive for $20 plus shipping if you like. Then all you need is a monitor and keyboard. If floppy and hard drive is elected, will preload DOS and Windows on hard drive free of charge. Excellent machine for the kids, beginners, collectors, etc.

i need to know if anyone has a 8088 to 386 upgrade card/ribbon cable, it plugs into an 8 bit slot and connects into the 8088 proccesor socket via a ribbon cable tied into the card with a 386 proccessor. or if there is one w/a 286 proccesor that would be fine too.. thanks

I can't seem to get my Packard Bell mouse with a PS-2 connector and a Microsoft serial adapter to work with the Logitech program on my 286 running DOS 5.0. Am I mixing three protocols?

I have a "memory write/read failure at 100000, read E9E9, expecting EFEF; decreasing available memory. I have never been able to get the Mitsubishi Electric Corp. memory expansion card to work on my 286-10. There are 3x 18 Mostek MK4564N-25 chips and 18 NEC D4164C-2 parity chips. I've tried to isolate the problem by removing 18 chips at a time and repositioning the dip switches to no avail.

Is there a problem with DOS 5.0 automatically running WINA20.386 on a `286 computer? Is there an extended memory management program designed for this computer?

I have a Magnavox 386DX-33 with Philips ROM BIOS Version
2.59. I am trying to connect a Western Digital 5.1 gb 3.5
inch Enhanced IDE disk drive as dual Master and a
High-Speed Enhanced IDE CDROM Drive as Slave to the onboard
IDE port. I can get the disk drive to work and I can
sometimes get the CDROM to be recognized. But I can never
access the CDROM the drive never starts spinning.

If I got an off board Enhanced IDE controller would that
help?

Does anyone know where I can find the sound card adapter for the Chaplet Halikan NBD486 notebook?
This sound card was mentioned on the manual, but was an optional item that did not come with the notebook.
My wife is going to Spain on assignment for a year and wants to spend part of her spare time learning English
with a multimedia course, but the lack of the sound card makes it impossible (the notebook was updated with a 1.6 Gb
HDD, 20 Mb memory, Win95 and Sony portable CD-ROM).

In repsonse to the rather odd comments for resetting the BIOS or passwords let me caution those that may try this that you may be readying your machine for the dump, or do nothing at all but frustrate yourself. In the IBM machines there are specific ways to reset the bios and passwords, all are different. Some have a jumper, some allow you to pull the hookup for the battery/speaker and flip itover and plug it back in. Most machines with external batteries can be disconnected and left overnight as this usually drains it and clears all of the bios. For those with soldered batteries you can desolder one side and let it ride out the night as well. The screwdriver in the slot ot against the battery terminal might work but probably in rare cases. If the machine you have is not documented you might have a problem. IBM makes all of their hardware manuals open to the public online and shoudl anyone require help with anything from a 5150 PC through the PS/1 Valuepoints just drop me a note and I can look up the password dump routine for you or tell you where it's located. Just excercise caution as even though it's just a 3.6 to 7.2v battery, it's still enough power to damage other components if the voltage of applied to the wrong place.

I have a TI 4000E WIN SX notebook with a TravelMate DeskTop intelligent docking system. The docking station has a SCSI port. I would like to add a SCSI CDROM, but I do not have driver software for the SCSI port. I believe it is an Adaptec port, but there are many Adaptec drivers out there. Does anyone have the right driver?

Does anyone have any information on a Visual model 1083 Laptop (maybe the world's first) The unit is made by Visual Technology of Tewksbury Mass. i have a friends pc....ibm comptable phoenix 80286 rom bios version 2.74s copyright 1985, 1986 phoenix tech. ltd, 1mg ram, 40mg hard drive a drive, b drive had dos 5.0 on it i formatted it and tried to install dos 6.22 on it. now it gives me 3 different error messages 1.) display adapter failed; using alternate. 2.) invalid config. info- please run setup. 3.) diskette drive 0 seek failure............HELP!!!! i've tried everything to get into the setup, i've checked the cables, tried F1 at reboot, F2 at reboot, del, esc, alt+ctrl+ins, alt+ctrl+enter, alt+ctrl+esc, checked all wires, checked all cables to make sure they are tight and the color is in the right direction, etc. I can't figure out how to get to the setup.....please help someone anyone PLEASE.

i'm trying to help a friend set up an ibm ps/2 70 386, but all i can get on startup is two error codes - 162 and 163. if i understand correctly, this means a setup disk is required. can i download this software somewhere, or can i make the proper setup disk on my own 386 dx40 (i.e. would a DOS boot disk work)? any information on this computer and how to set it up would be much appreciated.

Here's my problem: My daughter was given an IBM PS/1 Expert 486/SX with a VLSI chipset. The problem: It has a BIOS password that we cannot get past. I've read similar posts on this site, and can only hope that someone will know how to bypass this (WITHOUT jamming a screwdriver into an ISA slot or similarly damaging the motherboard). We don't have any documentation or schematics for this computer, and most of the jumpers are not labeled as to function, so my tinkering has done nothing. Any serious assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

My son bought a Leading Edge 486SX. He then bought 16MB of RAM, installed it, it worked.
He then bought a cheap sound card/CD-ROM set. He installed that, it sort-of worked.
Now it's for me to "make it work, Dad". In the course of that, I removed the sound card, then replaced it. Surprise, surprise. Next time I booted the thing, I was prseneted with the BIOS setup menu.

Having gotten the sound card working, it was decided to install DOS 6.22. In order to do that, it seemed like a good idea to interchange the A (5.25") and B (3.5")
drives. Did that. Both drives read, write, can boot from A (now the 3.5") BUT, if I try to formay a floppy, FORMAT thinks the A drive is still a 5.25", B a 3.5".

How do I get to alter the setup. "Press F2 before DOS starts." Nope. "Well then, DELETE" Nope.

The BIOS is PrimeBIOS A486 Version 1.01 LE2302.

How (other than taking out and then replacing the sound card can I induse this little @#$%^& to let me
alter the setup? And why would taking out and replacing tha sound card have that effect in the first place?

Finally, do I dare install DOS 6.22? Having run into something odd, I fear there may be more oddities waiting to bite.

Advice/comment/war stories would be appreciated.

OK guys, another wierd one for ya. I have a HP 486 50 with something
wierd. When I hook up the floppy, it always runs. I have tried every combo with the
cable possible. So, I removed the cable, and guess what....its still
ran continuosly. I tried a different setting on the drive itself (its a sony with
a swith of 1 2 3 or 4) 2 and 4 made it quit running constantly, but 4 gave a seek error
and 2 would not read data. I put the floppy on another computer and it works fine and
dandy. Any clues? Could it just be a incompatable floppy? Any explanations would
be great.

Well Gee i Was full of advice but i just need to know one thing. How many people out there have a T3100sx Toshiba Notebook computer that is like shutting off after 10 mins, then the DC in light flashes. I've read several commints about this problem, and have experienced it myself. In My personal opnion I think Toshiba rigged these computers to break. If anyone has a Working DC - DC converter for a T3100sx (Flap 04) and wishes to get rid of it... send it my way otherwise... Does anyone need some parts? Grin :)

How can I get into the BIOS of my Toshiba T3200?

OKay, I'm quite desperate, so maybe someone out there is old (or smart) enough to help me out here.

I have some old binary files that I need to open up on a present day system (PC,mac,unix). Here's the kicker, these files were originally encoded on the
old CDC7600 mainframe computers. Yes, theyre that old. Anyway, I've tried numerous encoders/decoders, and notthing has worked. So, I'm shopping for new and wonderful ideas.

So, if you have any clue about this, or if you can point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it.

A freind recently accuried an old (Laser computer Inc.) XTSL 640K Ser.0008635 It also has another # (maybe model #) 80-2390-707. The problem is it was up and running then transported to his house where it was set up. They had some sort of start up problem and let some neighborhood computer guru come over some how deleted some info and now all that happens is you get an error message follwed by a prompt to press any key. Was interested in a start up(emergency start up) disc. Excuse my lack of real nowledge in this feild.If you have a more intelegent solution to this problem I am open for suggestions. I'm trying to figure out the jumper settings for some controler cards I have. I need to setup a COM3 port on the card for use with a modem. I have some cards that have Winbond chips in them, but no listing of the manufacture. Went to Winbonds web site, but they just make the chips not the card. Made the cable to hook up a 1541 or 1571 commodore disk drive to
a pc,got the software and fierd the whole thing up!
It worked like a charm,and was easy to make,this should be a must for any
commodore buff.
Now does anyone have a way to hookup a commodore serial printer to a pc?

I have just acquired a Mac SE FDHD, but not alot else. It would be nice to be able to boot the system up, but all I get is a check on the HD and then FD, then the little disk icon. Can anyone help me? (I guess it means that I am looking for disk images of Mac system software that I can create disks for on a PC (bleh!)).

Gee, all these folks with questions on their "antique" IBM clones. Here's something challenging: I have a North Star Horizon (circa 1976) with exactly one bootable floppy - a hard-sectored 5-1/4" item! I'd like to back up the floppy so I can muck around with the beast. Anybody know of a source of hard-sector floppies (they have an index hole for each sector, instead of one hole). I don't really want to spend a lot of time and effort building a PLL circuit to synthesize all those index pulses.

I am now looking for any information available on two IDE cards; 1) Made by NCL America, model appears to be either NCL 53 or NCL 538B. It is a 16 bit ISA card with an IDE and floppy interface only. I have not been able to locate any information on this model and cannot seem to find the company. 2) Made by Northman Technology, no apparent model number. It is a 16 bit ISA multi-i/o card with two serial, one parallel, one IDE and one floppy port.

I would like to use these cards if I could get some information on jumper settings, what size drives they support, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To the poster about the PS/2 Model 30: It could be an 8086 or a 286. Look at the bottom right front and it will have an 8580-xxx code. XXX will be different depending on exactly what it is. If it says 30-001, 30-021, or 30-002, you have an 8086. If it says 30-Ex1, with x being 0,2,3, or 4, then it is a 286. Someone may have changed the number of drives or type of drives, so one can not tell by just the code as to what it is, but I will guess an 8580-002. (the second zero being for no hard drive and the 2 being for two floppy drives).

I have a 486DX2 running windows 3.1 using a 165Mb IDE
hardrive as drive 'C'. I would like to setup a Seagate
model ST-238R hardrive with a Western Digital controller
card WD1002 as drive 'D'. I think I can do this by changing
the I/O address on the WD card and getting a I/O driver
which operate the WD card at the 2nd I/O address. I don't
know the jumper settings necessary on the card and where to
find the I/O driver. Can anyone help me? Does anyone have
any other ideas as how to set up a 'D' drive using this
hardware?

Folks, The bug is worse than I thought. Do NOT use the "less than" (its a > pointing the other direction) AT ALL. The software will delete everything between it and the next ">" (greater than). To be on the safe side, i am just staying away from the shift key around the period and the comma.

A Model 30 with two 3-1/2 inch 720k floppy drives will cost $1695. One with a 20 Meg hard disk and a single floppy drive costs $2295. These prices do not include a monitor."

Dave's analysis: Since you have two 720k floppy drives, you have no hard drive. (later found to be incorrect by having the owner open the case) Since you have no hard drive, you have no operating system. What you are seeing on the screen is IBM ROM Basic, the BASIC programming language built into the chips of the computer. To run pre-made programs (XT class only), you will need to get a bootable 720k disk with MS-DOS 3.3 or lower on it. MS-DOS 5.0 will run, but the operating kernal is very large, and cannot be loaded high on this machine, so you will have less free memory for running programs, and none of the benefits of MS-DOS 5 memory management. The only version of Windows that will run is 3.0 (not 3.1) or lower.
To add a hard drive, you will need an XT hard disk controller and the proper type of hard drive for it, MFM (usually 20 meg), RLL (usually 30 meg), or one of the XT IDE controllers, with an IDE hard drive smaller than 540 meg. The computer uses the standard VGA monitor, but MCGA graphics only display a maximum screen resolution of 320x200 pixels with 256 colors, or 640x480 in black and white. I don't know if the MCGA adapter can be disabled to allow use of an 8 bit VGA card. The PS/2 mice used on modern computers today "should" work. Only 8 bit cards will work. Interrupt requests are as follows:

2 Free (could be used for an 8 bit VGA card)
3 Free (could be used for COM2 serial card or old
internal modem)
4 In Use Serial port COM1
5 Free (could be used for an XT hard disk adapter or

i have a compaq presario cds 833...i accidentally deleted the c:\windows directory and now it boots up and crashes and leaves me at the c: prompt...no problem i thought i will just reload windows via the d: drive...but alas i have no access to this drive...is there a dos driver for this drive for my faithful dinosaur...i know its a win95 related question however i feel since its running on a 33mhz it qualifies for old...granted my once state of the art ps2 16mhz screemer is probably a better canidate...peace and love james

The main problem with old IDE CD drives on the main IDE channel is that there was no way to set them up as the slave drive. If you have the docs or settings (rare for obsolete equipment) and they say it can be set up as a slave, you can try it IF your hard drive has the same jumper setting for single and master (I vaugly remember Quantums being like this)
I got around this on my Frankenstein 4/586 by installing another HD controller that was jumpered to be the
secondary IDE channel (look for one that has PRI/SEC printed near a jumper). Also, most sound card IDE ports are secondaries.

I don't have the manuals, but I've gutted one before (replaced it with a 386sx-16) I believe the sliding DIP switches are standard late model XT setup. I can E-mail those to you if you want to modify those to add another floppy drive, math coprocessor, or change the video card.
And the red button in the back is the reset switch.

That WAS the sweetest little XT I have yet seen...

only work on my pentium. They still show a error when i have the seek on startup

BIOS PROBLEM WITH LAPTOP PANASONIC 170

I have an old Laptop Panasonic 170. The computer does not
find the HDD anymore and I belive it has lost all the info
in the BIOS. I have tried to reboot the computer with a
boot diskett and it finds the a-drive (so the barrery is OK)

I recently picked up an Impact LS800-I Laser printer.
The printer works fine except it only emulates the old Diablo 630 IBM and ECS and Line Printers.
My big problem is that I have no Windows drivers for it.
The best I have is making the printer text only.

The printer was made by Impact in Australia. It has a small 256K RAM and according to it's printer stats function printed 57625 pages in it's life.

Please if you know where I could find drivers which work with this printer and allow non-generic font output please tell me.

Yes, 60ns will run fine. One can run FASTER RAM in a computer (as long as it is not twice as fast, no 45ns DRAM in a 286, please!) but running SLOWER RAM will require changing the wait states in the BIOS. If that last comment was over your head, don't attempt it; just stick with same or faster...

More than likely, AMI (American Megatrends Inc) did not build the motherboard, but only wrote the BIOS. However, I have had good success with my Evergreen 586 upgrade chip in three different computers (two with AMI bios and one with Phoenix). It is a direct chip swap, and doesn't need the bigger Overdrive socket. One tip: If the computer doesn't reboot after installing the chip, press the reset button. My 1992 Frankenstien 4/586 nonV/LB system needs a reset to start up (the other systems didn't).

Ah, GEOS. A Great program! I have versions 1.3, 2.0, 2.1, and 3.0. for MS-DOS Probably died because it was a very good integrated application program that everyone thought of as a Windows competitor that couldn't run Windows programs. I sold my Commodore 128D to be able to afford it.
Now the big question: Does anyone have the Apple ][ or C=ommodore64 versions of it? And would they be willing to part with the ][E version of it?

The Z-Station 510 I use at work uses 72 pin, non parity SIMMs. The benifit is you only have to add SIMMS one at a time. Be Warned: Simm Socket 4 on my machine does not work, so it may be wise not to buy memory to fill all the slots at once...

Hello, I have a Toshiba T3200SX.
I was running MS-DOS 6.0, and Windows 3.1 on it,
and I reformatted the HDD to test a copy of win 1.1.
I realized that 1.1 does not work, so I reformatted, and installed DOS. That worked fine, so I went to install Windows 3.1, and on the third disk, an error message appears, It says that standard mode cannot run, problem with HIMEM.SYS, try reconfiguring, or obtain a newer version? I have never had that problem on that machine before! I tried a different copy of windows, same message, I even scanned the dos disks for errors, and i tried reconfiguring, using MEMMAKER, still skrews up! HELP!
By the way, it is a 386, with 5 MB of ram.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

when I check them with a meter but they will not work in the laptop.Is there any way to discharge
them then re-change them so I can get them to work

I have a modem card I am trying to install in a 386sx16. I disabled com2 and am trying to install it on com4. It has a red block with 6 dip switches on it. I guess I need to know which setting is for com4 irq3. The card has no brand name on it. The largest chip on it says Rockwell 144 DPi. And a bios looking chip that has a sticker on it that says V6.15 071 Any suggestions will be a big help.

I found one at work, but the powersupply is lost, so if someone who stills owns one of these could mail me the voltage specification / pinout I would be EXTREAMLY greatfull. Any other info on the Bondwell model 8 would be regarded as a gift from the heavens.. ;)

I have found no info on this computer on the web, so here's some, sort of an addition to the OCM:

- Old LCD (?) matrix screen, prob. 24 rows.
- One 3╜" diskdrive, prob. 720Kb or worse. (320?)
- Manufacture date 1983 (welded at the bottom of the case.).
- Looks just like the Model 2 (wich is listed in OCM).

I need the jumper setting documentation for an old i/o card-set from a 386. One card is the HDD and FDD i/o. The other card has the serial ports, ptinter port and game port.
There is no identifiable manufacturer, but there is a part nuumber; "ATIO-V8"
I want to use the the second card as an LPT2 printer port in my newer computer. So I need to know the jumper settings for disabling everything else but the printer.

Not to get into the battle of newer stuff on the OCH....but just for informational purposes I have sucessfully installed Windows 98 Upgrade on a Dell 486DX2-66 machine with 2gb hard drive space and 32mb of RAM. While this is much more than many of the XT and early AT class machines, it is minimal by the standards of the Pentium class machines, and goes to show that the "obsolete" machines can hold their own amongst the Pentium II 400's....

Where can I find motherboard information on an American Megatrends 486DX2-50 in a KIS Technologies case? It has a 1995 copyright on boot up and is even able to handle EDO memory. It doesn't appear to have an overdrive socket, and I believe the chip is a Cyrix. How would I go about upgrading this? Will those 486-to-586 upgrade packages work? Is it just a matter of popping the 486 processor out and putting something new in its place? Any help would be appreciated. Also, where would I find the correct jumper settings?

I have a Compudyne 486 VESA system that has a Cyrix 486 chip running at 50 MHz. I want to get some RAM for it and I know that it can only use 72-pin SIMMs which are FPM, not EDO. However, I am wondering if I can use 60 ns RAM or do I have to stick with 70 ns. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, this is my problem, I have an old 486 computer that has a motherboard with the following characteristics: 6 ISA slots, what appears to be 2 VESA slots, 4 SIMM slots, 1 db25 serial, 1 db9 serial, 1 parallel, 1 scsi, 1 ide, 1 fdd, and 1 socket 3 slot, as well as, a Dallas DS12887 clock, an apparent bios chip labeled ACER v10 U44 v1.2R2.3, memory controller SiS 85C461, and printing on the board reading V10 M.B. 92135 48.43301.002. What I am looking for is documentation for the board. I have removed the old 486DX processor and I am running a Kingston 133MHz processor in it's place but I believe I still have some incorrect jumper settings. Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Working on a 386SX/25 made in China in Feb `93. Model is Laser Computers, Inc. #31456. Removed four 256K 30-pin SIMMS and replaced with four (known-to-be-good) 1MB SIMMS but sytem still only recognizes 1024K memory.
CMOS setup displays 1024K but won't let me enter the field to change it (BIOS is 1990 American Megatrends for VTech v1.7). There is a 10-DIP switch package between one SIMM slot and the other three; I'm assuming that the switch settings must need to be changed but don't know what to do next. Anyone been there/done that?

It will supposedly work on any of the Commodore serial bus drives such as 1541, 1571, etc. Very simple asembly.

Have a bunch of excess PS/2 model 55SX original motherboards that I need to find homes for rather than let them sit idle. I'm letting them go for $7 each plus postage (fairly light). They are tested good and have the Dallas battery/cmos chip on them as well. The battery is worth 5x what I'm asking for them.

If you have a dead model 55SX and want to get it back in order this is what you need. The board is an easy change with a screwdriver. I ship them in boxes made specifically for motherboards inside of static bags. Of course if you want more than one at a time the shipping per board is less since they go in the same box. I may even consider trades for other components or equipment I need around here. Just ask.

The end of the monitor cable is a 9-pin male connector (with no pin #7), but the computer's video slot is a 15-pin female connector (2 rows of pin holes). I have an Epson ActionNote 500c that I purchased from a friend.
He ad not used it in a long while after he purcased another laptop
and when I got it we found that he could not remember his password
that is set on te BIOS. The system checks the memory, displays
"Press DEL to enter setup" (for about 1/2 sec) and then prompts
for "current password". I have taken the thing apart and looked
for the CMOS battery, but am unable to find it. I have tried
disconnecting the hard drive, keyboard, and floppy trying to get
a configuration error with no luck. The motherboard has some DIP
switches on it, but I have been unable to locate any info relating
to their settings, and have not located any jumpers on the mother-
board that might enable/disable a password. Any info anyone could
provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Have an IBM PS/2 model 70 386 with a faulty floppy drive (or possibly incorrect setting in bios), tried to access bios by unplugging the harddrive - gave me some error messages, then dropped out into the built-in ROM BASIC version C1.10. After fiddelling with it everything stopped working only two error codes are: 161 and 163, then it's Basic. I know that 161 and 163 mean that time and date are incorrectly set. Can I set it from Basic? Can i access and modify CMOS from IBM Basic? Why would anyone need this Basic in the ROM? I am still looking for a working floppy drive for PS/2, anyone in the uk can spare one for me? Or sell? IBM part number is: 15F7503

Found an old IBM pc keyboard on the street today. It's the original 84-key type from the 8088 era. Now I'm of the opinion that these are the nicest keyboards ever made, so I tried to hook it up to my current 586 machine. It made a hideous beeping noise and booted, but wouldn't access the keyboard, except for occasional garbage. I remember when they changed the kb interface in 1984 or whatever, but it seems like a simple change, so I'm wondering if there's a known way to make this relic work on my current system. Homebrew comments welcome (encouraged). I'll solder anything.

I was given a Zenith 386 20mz from the Navy for my classroom. It has a password enabled in the Bios setup. I need to no the jumper setting to remove the password. The Navy keeps saying they will come and remove it but they haven't come yet.

I just bought a TRS-80 Model 4p. My PC's 5-1/4" disk drive is not functioning, and there is no communications program on the TRS-80. I need either: 1) A BASIC program I can type in on the TRS-80 that will let me download files through the serial port from the PC, or 2) Information as to how to use files and the serial port. (It has NewDOS/80.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine was given an ACMA 486/66 with 8 mg of RAM. I would like to

Hello, I have an unknown 486sx (TS34X-25 model). I have had no luck obtaining Mfg. name so that I can get a manual.
I also have the docking station for it. I am looking for an inexpensive LCD panel for this or better yet, just the phosphorecent

the Everex company has been absolutly horrible to me. when i call for

At the starting of the book, it appears that it is for both
the IBM PC, and XT. But...there are only jumper settings for
the PC listed. Is this the manual I am looking for or is there
one labled:

Here's my problem.
I have an Epson Equity 386SX PC which I just replaced the
hard drive on. I can't seem to locate the original setup
disks for this system. I checked Epson's web sight, and
found a setup utility which I could download. After running
this utility, the hard drive works ok, but the machine will not recognize the 2mb of memory installed on the mother board, and the printer port will not work. Also, does anyone know of a bios upgrade that is available that I can put on this pc? Thanks.

I am working on a compaq presario cds 982, trying to upgrade the HDD to a 5.7 GB, the computer was designed only to take up to a 1 GB HDD. I have tried using Ontracks DM, the process that it takes: DM reconfigures the CMOS data, then partitions the drive with 3 partitions, when rebooting, the CMOS reconfigures itself to the full drive paramaters, eg: creating an invalid partition table...
I have called compaq, they had no ideas, but reiterated that the 'puter was designed to use up to only 1.0 gb per hdd controller!!┐

I have a T3200 laptop.

I have recently found an Epson Equity II for $30 at a local used equipment store. I know that is came with a 286/12 w/640k installed, floppy drive and 30mb hard drive. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this machine and if it is worth the price for it. It work out to 20 american if you figure the exchange rate. I am taking it for granted that the HDD is a St-506 with a stepper motor which means that if it works at all, it will not work all that well or quickly. I generally buy old pc's to fix them up and try to add new things to them. Since I have just finished up with building a 386 starting with the motherboard, I am looking for something else to work with that will not be a pain to find parts for.

I have a fully functional Ollivetti PD3 graphics tablet (circa 1980). Windows wants nothing to do with it - I need drivers for it. Can anyone help me?

Looking for CP/M system disks and software for Kaypro I and/or Kaypro 4 computers. Failing that, anyone in the

I have a NEC powermate sx/20 with a phoenix bios version 1.01. The bios rom is 01.04.14. My problem is that I can not get into the cmos setup. I have tried f1,f2, ctrl+alt+esc, ctrl+alt+s,alt+s, to no avail. I have no documentation for the machine. I even tried unplugging the hard drive cable to force it into setup. Hi all, now that I'm here another question.
I've got a Chicony CH-386S-16D 386-mainboard.
Simm 1 through 4 are empty.
Bank 0 is filled with 9 x MCM511000AP80(LQQAT9016)
and 9 x KW41C1000AP.
But now I've got 2 x 4Mb Simms. I put them in slot
sim1 and sim2. But after startup the darn machine will
only recognize 2Mb, what must I do to have 8 or 10Mb
on this maschine?

Hi all, I just picked up a large(bigtower) IBM ps/2 model 80(?)
It looks fine, after startup it gives me the code 165 and
the roundsign with the stripe trough it. Now I know
error code 163 and 164 but what the heck is a 165? I suspect
it is the harddisk, I cannot find one inside, but than again
what should be in it? I've got scores of HD's 20/40/60/120
but will they fit? I see several cards in the machine, I even suspeect
a SCSI-card. Please can anyone help me?

I have a Tandy 1000sx and I need a word processing program for it.

I recently received for free a printer with the name "PSJet Postscript Laser Printer" on it. It appears to have a model number: LBP-CX I/F PCB-1. I need a printer driver for it and possibly a paper cartridge.

I have a Zenith ZBV-1339-EQ 386 desktop made in 1988.
Currently it has 2MB of RAM configurable as extended.

I got a very old printer today. It looks like it hooks to a network or mainframe of some kind. It is an IBM model 5256 dot matrix. It is huge, and weighs a ton!! On the back it has two ports that are round and have 2 pins on it. I have all the manuals and cables, but i was wondering if anyone knows if i could hook it up to a standard PC somehow. There are 15 pin connectors that look like joystick ports. If anyone knows about this let me know. If someone wants it, its free, but you have to pick it up from my house. i wont ship it (weighs all of 95-100 lbs)

I have an old baby AT formfactor 286-20 (Harris 286 20 Mhz)
motherboard that I cannot identify. I beleive that the model
of this board is M209. I think this may be an very old M-tech
board, since the model number seems to fit their numbering scheme.
Is there any place I could go to that would give me a complete
listing of M-tech motherboards? Another strange feature on this
board are the bios chips. Both the CMOS and KB BIOS chips are
labled AMI Cotek. I can't seem to find any information on these
chips either.

I have recently got ahold of a NEC MultiSpeed "portable". _Any_ kind of information about it would be appreciated to help me fix/use this beast, since it's not working. I have got the power supply working again, but need schematics for the rest. Thanks for any help.

My mother picked up an IBM PS-1 computer at a yard sale, very cheap. The only problem is, (and believe me I have no clue when it comes to computers but being the daughter that I am I gave it a shot) it keeps saying that she has to have Disks to use with it. I was able to get into dos and check out her hard drive. It says that c-drive is a "ROM DRIVE". It will not let me reformat the drive.

Are PS-1's the type of computers that requires Diskettes to run them? Does ROM Drive mean that it is a READ ONLY drive and that we can't write anything to c-drive? Someone please help me out if you can.

p.s. It appears as if Microsoft works is installed, but it asks for a disk. And it also looks as though the former owner has prodigy installed on it, and it also asks for their disk.

Here's the deal. I set up a supervisor password on my machine and of course
forgot it. I have an ECS AL486 Motherboard and a Phoenix BIOS. The MB manual
is fairly worthless. If anyone has any clues, please reply. It's getting

I am having a problem with a PS/2 60 with a Reply upgrade board. The board is a 72G2609 (72G2610) IBM replacement and is currently using BIOS 1.38 a the 60-65-80 planar uprgade reference disk. I can't get a SCSI drive to work or the IDE interface to work. I'm using a IBM 15F6561 SCSI card, but the MC slots have a extra two connectors on the fromt of the slot. Can anyone enlighten me on this problem??

I pulled it from the case. (Which means it went through mem check etc
before giving the "you have no drives or keyboard attached" errors. Make

386 motherboard. Has 8 30 pin slots. No processor. Used to have a 386 33
processor I was told. Condition Unknown. Make me an offer as well.

3 sound cards. Not tested. Was told they were 16 bit sound cards. Make me
an offer.

9 data tapes. 5 are 3M Mini data cartridge tapes,DC2120's at
120mb each. 2 are motorola 4mm 9m 2gigs each 1 is a Exatape
90M 2 gig tape and 1 is Sony DG 90MA tape. The Exatape is
unopened. The sony doesnt looked used. The rest are used. Make
me a reasonable offer on each one or for the lot.

For anyone looking for a software solution to Y2K for your PC's, go to Caldera's web site at http://www.caldera.com. Their DR-DOS 7.02 is the solution, and for personal use, it's free! They also have a version with NetWare Lite inclided, so you can build your own peer-to-peer network. I've been running it on my Leading Edge Model D XT with no problems for about 6 months now. PC was running DR-DOS 5.0 before that . . .

HELP! A friend gave me a NoteStar Notebook computer or lap top, whatever--I'm a knuckle-dragging technological Neanderthal new to this technology and it's jargon--Model # NP943, Serial # 252004. Useless for working on the Net--chokes up bad--but great for the convenience of working on site files and handling e-mail nearly anywhere. However, the on Board Battery is dead. I can cope. But left unused for a while it fell back into some kind of a default setting and trying to reset the cylinders (?) with the settings programmed into it would not bring back DOS and Windows. (I have no bootable disk, by the way, and can't make one, unable to get into DOS.) Fellow who gave it to me called from MO and said the settings were something other than what's in the program, that he sent them with the computer on an index card, but I never found such a card and he can't remember the settings. What I need, a more knowledgeable and less verbose friend said, is the Hard Drive Settings. I recently salvaged a Everex EV-391 hard disk controller and ST-225 20 meg drive from an old Commodore PC 10-II computer.I have installed it in my Tandy 1000 TX.I am sharing the IRQ 5 with the video(there is a switch on the TX to allow this.)It works fine,except for one problem.
I also have a 20 meg hard card(cat.# 250-1032).If I plug it in too,the computer tells me I don't have hard drive install.
What can I change on the hard card,so it will work with the Everex board.The hard card IRQ is 2.I would like to have the hard card as C: and the external hard drive as D:.
Anybody have any suggestions?
By the way,if you are an old Coco user,with an empty FD-500,501,or 502 floppy drive case/w power supply,they work great as a case of the ST-225,and the power supply in the case works with the drive.To make things work better,install some type of fan.

Still in need of a couple of sets of drive rails for the external bays on a Dell 4066/XE server unit. These are plastic that mount to the device for a 5.25" bay and have a lock tab on the front end of the rail that snaps into a recangular slot on the case front. The Dell part number, molded into the rails, is 25102 and they are used on many of the desktop cases as well. Anyone have a couple of sets, I can probably use a bunch but at present 3 sets would suffice. Drop me a direct email at your convenience.

Could anyone help me? I got an old 486 computer, and I've
fixed it up almost an unbelevable amount, but I still can't
run two programs. One's called Mach 3, and when I try to run
it, it says DISK ERROR in the top left corner. The other is
3D Country House, when I try to run it, it says CAN'T FIND
BATLITE. Dose anyone know how I could fix these probles?

I found an Acer Model MPF-PC/710 (Multitech Ind. Corp.), and need a schematic to repair it. I think one of the IC chips is missing on the circuit board. The empty IC chip space is U-50 on the board, next to a bios chip U-51. I could replace the U-50 chip without a schematic if anyone knows the IC chip identity that I need.

I'm doing some data work on a Macintosh Classic. I hit a key on the keypad while it was booting up, and now all I get is a blank screen with the pointer showing. I desperately need to get this puter functioning again, but know nothing about Mac. If anybody has a suggestion on how I reset this puppy PLEASE get back to me!

I am looking for information on an Acer Model 1120SX. It looks to be the same model as a PC I owned years ago and it had a 386SX/20 w/100mb HDD, 3.5", 5.25" floppy drives. The case is the same as the one I had but I am wondering if anyone would know anything about this model and if it is the same thing. They are selling it for $50 dollars and if it is the same as the one I had before than it would make a neat machine to get. If anyone knows anything about this model I would appreciate any comments. I checked the Acer site and they have nothing on older models so I struck out there.

I really need to find a copy of Windows 3.1 for my laptop, which can run DOS fine (and 3.1) but not Windows 95. I only 95 on disks and could really use this copy of 3.1. Could someone please ZIP the Windows disks and send them my way, or any other suggestion (FTP site, etc.) would be most helpful.

HELP ME! When I insert my dx4 100 overdrive in my zeos 486, the error message 'invalid boot sector' appears. I am running software for an added hard drive and believe that is the problem. Microsoft are releasing a machine that replaces a car stereo
that run Win CE.

I've got a better idea.

Buy a 386/486 base unit put it in the boot (trunk) of your
car. Get a IBM 9" mono VGA screen and mount it on the dashboard
and a laptop style external numeric keypad to control.
Install a NEC 4x4 CD ROM changer in the PC. You now have
a cheap car CD player, that can also do other things.

I have not tried this but I thought it could be fun. The
hard bit would be getting 110/240v off the car battery to
drive the PC and the monitor.

I've written some docs on how this could work in theory.

Cheaper than those mapping comptuers as well.

I have a Macintosh Plus that works fine, but the ol' SCSI drive made by Ehmann Engineering has died.
I used to consider this 30-megabyte drive HUGE, virtually impossible to fill. Now it's just dead.

So does anyone here know where I can find a replacement external SCSI drive on which I can load the original software?
Almost anything would be better than constantly swapping floppies!

I HAVE A TRS-80 MODEL1 WITH KEYBOARD,MONITOR,MONITOR ADAPTOR,2 DISK DRIVES,& A REALLY HEAVY LINE PRINTER.NO SYSTEM DISK(I DON`T THINK ANY SYSTEM DISKS HAVE SURVIVED THE YEARS). IS THERE A MARKET FOR THIS?

An old 'Amstrad ALT 386sx' laptop has an occassional fault reading from the floppy drive. Somehow I got into the bios setup as the computer recognised the fault with the drive. Once exited the setup, it now boots without recognising extended memory.
I need to get back into the configuration setup but don't know which key sequence to hold down.
I mentioned "laptop" but it is really the size of the usual PC box, with the added addition of battery and transformer!

I'm working on a GRiDCASE 1530.
It has a Phoneix 80386 ROM Bios, v. 3.06 (3/11/89)
It currently has DOS 5.0 installed on it, and I have
the Micro 2000 PC XT AT PS/2 Diagnostics disk, Micro-Scope
version 4.28, which has a setup utility included in it.
What I cannot do is find anywhere to make the laptop boot
from Floppy! If you know where this setting can be found,
or another setup program that will accomplish this, I would
be greatful to find out!
Also, is the CMOS battery replaceable in this laptop?
That is, without any soldering required? If so, where is
the battery located inside, and what type is it?

Found a Tandon LT 386 in the dumpster...the clock battery had melted but the ni-cad still had a little life, enough to run the floppy but not the hard drive. Any information about this unit would be helpful. Upgrade, external power supply etc. thanks

I forgot to give the command instruction for
restoring the volume labels when unzipping.
it's;
pkunzip -$ :winzip.zip :
note: characters in are variables for the drive that
the zip files are downloaded on, zip files winzip1 through 7,
and the drive being unzipped to. Do not type in.
the program will not install correctly without the volume
labels.
The -$ (dollarsign), is the
switch that pkunzip uses to restore compressed
volume labels to disk.
You can also add the labels manually using DOS
label command, they are;
WIN30DISK01
WIN30DISK02
WIN30DISK03
WIN30DISK04
WIN30DISK05
WIN30DISK06

Ok...I have a wierd problem with a hdd. It is a 4 gig drive that was running just fine and ducky up till today. I took it off to test some other drives. When I put it back on, it was all messed up. All the data was lost. I even lost my secondary partition. Here is the wierd part. When I went to put it back on, it would only partition at 248 megs and a logical one at the same. The remaining space before it was almost 2 gigs. The primary partition I left intact since all I had to do was format it. Does anyone know what this was caused by. (I did have EZ bios on here since this is a WD Caviar drive but now its gone...could that be it?) Any help will be much appreciated.

a 'Mountain Computer' ISA 16bit SCSI card.
I think it was supplied with a Tape drive. The chipset is an
NCR 53C94, the card is Assy: 05-31302-01 Rev J, made in 1990.

I'd like to know how to boot my Sharp PC-8700 from a floppy disk. Is there a special key sequence? I've put in bootable floppies from several different OS's...no dice. Somehow, somebody loaded a copy of Win95 on it...I want it OFF. I prefer Redhat Linux here.

I have a compaq lte lite 4/25c. I had a copy of NT 4 running on it but was hit with a bad virus. I reformatted the drive and tried to install NT 3.51 so as to prepare myself for the mcse exams. I have had nothing but problems during this time. It
is impossible to recognize the hard drive and the sofpaks don't seem to work due to memory shortage. I tried to utilize all the memory but it seems to call for a special limm file tofix this. I looked all over the compaq site and they don't seem to keep up with this model.
I need help.. I tried to install win3.11 and it locks up. I tried a laplink copy and still the same. I need this to work. I have copies of 3.51,4.0 and win3.0 and 3.11 at my calling. but nothing I do works. can some please tell me what to do next..

I recently inherited a C-64 and 1541. No power cable for the 1541. I used a standard power cable on it, and when I turned the drive on, it wouldn't stop whirring. Did I blow a fuse or is the drive dead? (PS does anybody have an old working 1541 they wanna give to a good home?)

Hi Joe,

If you used the FDISK command to create a new partition you
also have to format the drive afterwards, then install dos.

Hi Amy,

I saw your message on the helpline.
The only way to install the io.sys and the msdos.sys is:
Starting up your computer with a BOOTABLE DISK or FLOP with the
format.com file and then type:
format c: /s or format a: /s
Or if you have the file sys.com you can install the files with:
sys c: or sys a:
Note: Using sys.com is only possible if you use the same dos-version or if
you install a newer dosversion over a older dosversion.
So installing 3.20 over 6.2 is not possible without the format.com.

If this is not working you have to use 'fdisk' for making and viewing the partition(s).
In the most worse case you can try the 'debug' command for lowformatting the drive
(only works with 5.25" drives !! you better don't lowformat an IDE-drive!!).
Then you also need to know the specs and errorlist of the drive.
See my message below.

Maybe there are some collectors in your neighbourhood with a dosflop.

I have now been able to check the BIOS identification string, and it indicates that my board is from Dataexpert Corporation in Taiwan. I have sent and received mails with a very nice technical support person there, but they do not have the configuration file I need anymore.
Do any of you have an EISA motherboard from this company running? I would really appreciate to get in touch with you.

I've got an IBM 386 PC with an uncontrollable mouse pointer. The mouse is OK as I've tried several. I've tried reinstalling windows 3.11, (didn't help) and can't seem to get it to behave. I have a Gridcase 1530 that had DOS 5.0. I reformatted my hard drive
using FDISK and now I am unable to access it. When I run DOS6.22
from the diskette I am able to get to a Dos prompt.
I type in FDISK and it comes back with NO FIXED DISKS PRESENT.

Any ideas what is missing?
Where can I find a Grid Utility disk?

Re: TI laptop - Travelmate 4000: the built-in jack, for the A/C power cord, comes loose/shifts within 1-2 hours of use and won't stay firmly connected to the cord, resulting in sudden power shut-off. Sometimes, tweaking the cord position, usually downward buys some time but obviously this is not a solution. I can't afford the $300 TI wants for a whole new power board/jack part -- any repair suggestions please!!...improvement is enought, doesn't have to be perfect. Thx.

I have a Lexmark 4029 6P. Print speed is too slow in Win98. It prints about 3 pages in 5 minutes. Is there a driver for Win98 that will bring it back to rated speed ( 6 PPM)?

I am looking for info on a motherboard. It has a CHIPS chipset with a 386SX/20 processor, LPX M/B with riser card (3 16-bit slots on card), Phoenix Bios that needs setup disk and disk drive does not work because it is a special type with no power connector so the power must go through the cable to the drive. It has a switch block with 8 switches and about 10 different jumpers on differnet places on the board.

Right now, I think that the disk drive has died and the bios has been reset and needs to be configured. Need to find some kind of drive that will work with it. It is a really nice piece with all the com, lpt and video built into the board. The keyb and mouse are ps/2 type with a 9-pin serial, parallel and VGA video.

Hope this seems familiar to someone.

Greatings; I have an Apple //c with the flat black and white display. I power it from a 13.5 volt Auto Battery. I can't find my manual and I need to know how to wire the pin outs from the printer port to drive an Apple Image Writer II. Any advice or assistance would be appreciated. This computer has been powered up since it came out of the box in 1983. Here in the "jungle" with 100% humidity very few electronic components last more than a couple of years. The Apple //c modem port is connected to a Terminal Node Controller fastened to a Diamond Tell InmarSat-C Transever. Untill 1991 the //c was linked to the Global Radio Tellitype Network via an HF Trancever. When or If the //c packes it in, I am not sure if we will find any thing more rugged and dependable to fill the roll.

Here's one for you hardware gurus:
I have an old Keytronic enhanced keyboard. It has an XT/AT switch on the bottom, and I'm using it on a Zenith 386.

Problem is this: When I turn the computer on, some random combination of the lock lights will come on and stay on, and the machine gives a "keyboard not responding" error. Sometimes it boots to the prompt OK, but keystrokes will not appear on screen. CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't help. I must turn off the power, and turn it back on again. It often takes several on/off cycles before the keyboard responds correctly. Occasionally (like tonight) it works first try, but not often.

The keyboard from my Pentium works perfectly on this machine.
Is the old keyboard toast, or is there something I can do?

Can some kind soul send me instructions for removing the
logic board of my Classic II? Opening the machine is not a
problem; I'm just not sure how to detach the cables
connecting the hard and floppy disk drives to the logic
board. And I don't want to damage or destroy any of the
delicate parts inside by yanking on the wrong end of one
of the cables.

I have an AST RamPAGE! AT with what appears to be a chip count of 2MB. The BIOS only sees 3.9 MB when it's installed on a machine with 2MB on the system board. Both Quarterdeck Manifest and Landmark Win:Probe show 4690k physical RAM. Do I need a driver?
Ok, second question... I have a GRiD 1755 laptop with a dud LCD. Can I get a new one cheaply?
Third question: On said GRiD 1755 laptop, I have tried installing Windows 95. It goes normally until it gets to where the desktop *would* appear. After that, the splash scrren goes white, and overlays the desktop which is only taking up the upper 1/3 of the scrren, and is white. If I hit ctrl-esc, go to Run, and type "dosprmpt" and hit alt-enter, the screen goes black, with a blinking cursor in the upper-left corner. Upon hitting alt-enter again, the screen is normal for about 1 second, and then goes back to being a white band across the upper 1/3 of the display. You can still see the start menu and taskbar, and if you squint, you can make out the "MS-DOS Prompt" window title. How do I get 95 running? It seems to go at an OK clip, I just can't see it. (I tested this by running Notepad, writing "Windows 95 test", saving it, and reopening it in MS-DOS EDIT.)

We have some old 1802 source code that was not documented,
now we need to "reverse" engineer this code and develop
flow charts so that we can then implement the correct algoithms
in a new processor.

I've got a Zenith 286 laptop with a bad hard drive. The drive is a Conner CP-323 (10MB Capacity). The drive has a strange 20-pin connector that I'm not familiar with. Does anyone know where I can purchase a replacement drive that is compatible? I'd also like to add a fax/modem card to that Zentih laptop, and would appreciate any assistance in finding a source for that card as well. Thanking you in Advance for any assistance.

OK, people. Two things.
Item #1: Anyone who received Windows ver 1.01 from Maverick and me did not get a copy of PIFEDIT.EXE, and you probably won't be able to run DOS programs under Windows without it. Someone has since sent me a copy of PIFEDIT.

I found a 386 that works beautiful :) upgraded to 8megs and tweaked this
and that
put in soundblaster sound card and 14.4 modem everything is going well at
this point
now trying to put 2x CD-rom piggy back to hard drive . everything on CD-Rom
is showing green light have proper driver and everything but puter just
dosent like this idea :( ...... Would be cool to add this as CD-rom is just
laying around gathering dust!!

My question is would you know who made this computer ???? The cover just
has
PC SYSTEMS on the front with a black horse (looks like chess peice) and
thats it ..
Cant find it on the net.... If I could go right to the horses mouth so to
speak maybe I could find a driver specific for it or it or just the info
