I've got a couple of questions and requests about a few of
my ancient computers. First, I've got an ancient Mac 512ke
which has been upgraded to a Mac Plus. I've got two floppy
drives (800k) but I'd really like to get a hold of an old
external 10 or 20 meg hard disk (scsi interface, I think...)
Does anyone have one of these they'd like to get rid of for
a low price (or free?)

I picked up a Digital PDP-11/73 Microcomputer from a doctor's
office that was throwing it away. It seems to work alright,
except that the hard disk has a few bad sectors on it, and
when it boots it stops in the middle with a "Read Error".
From the documentation I have available on it, it is (or was)
running an operating system called Micro/RSX. Does anyone
know where I can find a copy of this on floppies or data tape?
The hard drive itself seems to be an MFM drive, but I have
no idea what size or type it is. Does anyone know the
specifications on the drive? Thanks in advance to anyone
who can help.

I recently inherited an IBM Portable Computer Model 5150:

- 8086(I think)
- 640k RAM
- 360K 5.25" floppy
- 20Mb Hard Drive.
- MSDOS 3.30

Anyway, I wanted to use the machine as a dumb terminal. I have
tried several standard communications programs, but they
all report that they cannot open the serial port. (COM1-4)
Anyone have any idea how to get the serial ports to work?

I recently acquired a "dick smith system-80" which is a
clone of a TRS-80 Model 1. I think these were called
"Video Genie" or "Genie 2" in europe and the USA.

I have NewDOS/80 for this system, was CP/M ever available
for these (it would be difficult given the memory layout)?

Also, does anybody have a Forth interpreter for these systems.
What about a design to build a serial port?

OK, this isn't really a computer, but it calls itself a computer and is made by a company claiming to be a computer company, so I thought maybe someone would be able to help me with my question - I have a Franklin Spelling Ace XL model SA-100XL made by the Franklin Computer Corporation in Mount Holly, NJ. It looks like we bought it in 1987, but for the life of me I can't find the documentation. I've briefly broused around the net looking for the Franklin Computer Company in hopes that they could answer my question, but maybe they don't exist any more? Anyway, I know that in addition to helping you spell stuff, this thing also has games on it (hangman and others) but I can't remember how to get to them. Can anyone help?

I've aquired an odd machine I'd like info on. It's a Perkin-Elmer DataStation3000.
Here's what I already know:
Perkin-Elmer is still around and manufactures scientific equipment.
The unit uses a motorola 6800 processor.
The unit has two XT-Style 360K 5.25 disk drives.
It runs an OS called PETOS (Probably Perkin-Elmer Terminal Operating System)
It was built between 1977 and 1984.
It was likely used to run a mass spectrometer.
The OS boots up like so:
PLEASE ENTER TIME HH:MM
>
PLEASE ENTER DATE YR/MO/DA
>
PETOS>

It responds to the following commands:

SHOW - Displays the time
RUN - File Not Found, if there's no disk in the second drive, Disk1 ADDR Error if there is.
LOAD - See RUN
SAVE - See RUN
DISPLAY - Invalid Application
START - Invalid Application
RESTART - Invalid Application
It has several ports, including a serial port, and it works fine,
I just don't know much about it's origin or original use, or it's OS.
If anyone knows anything about this machine, I'd love to hear from you.
I'd also like any info on GRiD Compass series computers, I have two and a hard-disk unit, one of them and the disk unit work great, and I know a bit about it, but I'd like to learn more, find software, and find a source for replacement parts.
Also, if you have any old 'puters to discard/sell/trade let me know, I'll take just about anything, even if everyone else thinks it's garbage. :)

Is it charged through the computer or separately?
Can it be run direct from the mains?
If so which connector should be used?
and what voltage does it need?

Thanks

A friend at work just gave me a Tandy 1400 Laptop
computer. It doesn't have a Hard Drive, but it
is in working condition, and has two 3.5" Disk Drives
even though it is from 1985. ( the disks are 720K)
It also has MANY ports on the back, such as Monitor,
keyboard, etc. My question is if I can get a 40 meg or
so Hard drive for it for a DECENT price and put it in.
It is still a pretty small Laptop, and I am willing to invest a little
to make it better. Please e-mail me at Justin@ntcnet.com
for more information on it or if you have an answer to my
question.

I have a COMPUDYNE Pentium computer which is actually an ACER, I believe. Maybe made for the European market?? The motherboard is a V12LC and the only reference to it I can find is on ACER's German site. I'm trying (with zippo luck) to get a single floppy drive to work in it. I've changed cables and know about the twist thing, etc. The bios will accept it in one setup, but doesn't boot DOS, or read any disk, off of it. Any ideas as to what is going on here??? Thanks.

I have a Tandy 2500 XL(phoenix) with Smartdrive and MSDOS 3.1. C drive used to have MS WIN3.1, WORKS, DOS, KP, & WINSOCK directories and @1,440K of unused disk space. Now it only has DOS which contains 7 files & 0k of unused disk space and boots to Deskmate which is write protected. I know the original software is still on the hard drive but I don't know how to access it. At startup I get "invalid configuration information- run setup program" I don't have any setup disk. I probably need to setup BIOS, CMOS, and SMARTDRIVE. Does anyone know where to get setup disk or tell me how to do it. Will pay a small fee, if you can help me recover my missing directories. contact Jason at insidetrack@webtv.net

I have and AT&T 6386 WGS (20 MHz) computer.
It came with a Micropolis 70 MEG RLL encoded drive, and a
1.2 meg 5 1/4" floppy drive.
I have removed the HD RLL controller card and the HD.
I have installed a 16 bit IDE Card and a 170 meg IDE HD.
I have cabled the existing 5 1/2 1.2 meg floppy drive to
this IDE controller card.
It all works.... the problem is this.
I have to boot from the floppy disk. When I attempt to boot
from the HD I get a NO OPERATING SYSTEM ERROR.
I even re-installed the DOS and after turning off the machine
and turning it back on I get the same problem.

Booting it from the Floppy drive works, I can then load Win 3.1 and everything
is fine. I would like to boot from the HD however.

This computer has CMOS setup software. While making changes
to the CMOS configuration I noticed that I could not select
the HD I now have. The CMOS Setup software does not allow
for entering specific data such as Head, tracks, cylinders,
Precomp etc. I thought maybe if I had an updated version
of the CMOS setup software maybe that would straighten
things out, but have had no success finding such software.
Not even sure if it makes a difference one way or the other.

Well Thanks in advance for taking the trouble to at least
read this far!

Paul

I have a Personal System/2 Model 80 386. I had the system put away for about seven years. It had UNIX and AIX. It's a mainframe. Well, one day I decided to hook it up again and bring it back up. Well, I got as far as when you are suppose to type in the password. I could not remember the password. However, I did not log off correctly. I simply shut it off. I think I crashed the system. I can not bring it back up. My question is did I ruin the memory on my computer? Do I have to reenter all the information? The only thing that appears on the screen is IBM BASIC. How can I bring my computer back?

Looking for a boot disk (MSDOS) for a Tandy 2000 (not an HD). I understand this is a 720k floppy and proprietary DOS version. Tandy is no help, of course. I'm going to donate this machine to a friend's 12 old kid to get used to a "computer" so I'm not prepared to pay for uch more than the floppies, your time (reasonably) and the mailing. I do however want to get it working again.

I have recently been given a friends old Compuadd 325TX Laptop.
It was running perfectly until he lost the power adapter on a vacation.

He used it mainly (since it is a 386)for checking email while traveling.
I would like to do the same, but cannot locate a power supply. On the case
it says to use only a NBC model power supply and it states it has
a rating of 13.5 v. It appears to need some type of Mini din type plug for
the adapter to plug in. Thanks in advance.

I am a teacher who was offered a donation of some Mac 512s for my school. I looked up what they are and found out that they have no hard drive, no SCSI drive and use 400k floppy disks. Does anyone know where I can get a disk that can operate a Mac 512? I assume that the disk will not only have to have the System software on it but also a program (like writing) as well. Please email ideas to barbrac@primenet.com .

Wondering if anyone had any technical info or drivers for use with the Emerson 8000EC (late 80's XT clone--rather nice for an XT, had early Phoenix BIOS, DOS-on-ROM (MS-DOS 3.31), XT-IDE, the works; ROM and BIOS were by Phoenix/Quadtel). Specifically, am looking for technical info on the "ET-100 system" used in the Emerson XT clones (this is either the motherboard or the Phoenix/Quadtel goodies). This was to odo with extra RAM in these systems (they had an extra 128K of memory which could be used as RAMdisk or disk cache); docs with ramdisk driver indicate the "ET-100" system was made by Quadtel. If any driver exist to allow the extra 128K to be used as EMS or XMS memory it'd be appreciated if you'd point me to 'em. :)

re: Bios password
I have a CompuAdd 386 33 with Pheonix Bios chips. The password is diabled and we want to enable it. When we run the bios setup we are asked to enter the current password and we don't know what it is. We unpluged the CMOS battery and we still can't get the old password to go away. Any ideas would be helpful.

Having finally succumbed to the Wintel hegemony, I need to convert MS Works files from my Mac SE 800K floppy format (Works ver 1.1, Sys ver 6.0.5) to my new Pentium 166 running Windows '95 and MS Works ver 4.0. The conversion utilities I have run across do not seem to support the 800K floppy format, apparently for technical reasons related to the physical attributes of the disks.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I already miss the old Mac - elegant, bullet-proof, 20meg HD that I never came close to exhausting...a huge and wet thptttt to planned obsolescence and our friends in Redmond...
