The computer show is in town and it's time to feed my TriGem CTC 4MX/GL 486. I've upgraded this thing from a 486 SX/33 to a 486 DX2/66. This is the highest speed processor the owners manual mentions as an upgrade. A vendor is selling a 486 DX4/100. All I know is that I have to stay with the Intel brand, which this is. He tells me that I can use the CPU as long as the socket is 3.3 volts because it runs on a 33 mhz clock speed. Is he right? What other information should I know? Do I have to change any jumper settings?

Thanks for your help.

To all who are looking for the Hard Drive Specs. (Cyl,Tracks,Heads, and MORE), this Web site has all the old ones and most of the new ones. If you know the Manufacture, and the Mod.# , it will go right to that Drive, if you only have Hard Drive manufacture name it will give a list. www.blue-planet.com/tech/main.html

I finally recieved my Compaq Portable 386/20 2670. It worked fine when I recieved it, but I shut it off one night, and woke back up to discover that the CMOS had dissapeared. I have the sofpaqs (Compaqs Diagnostic/setup progs) but I am unable to transfer them to 5.25 360k disks. I need someone who can do this for me. I have a 3.5 inch drive for this computer, but I am unable to hook it up at this moment.

I will pay for disks and shipping.

I picked up a pc, about 1992 version NEC with Phoenix bios.
It had problems reading from the 3.5", so I put in a new one.
Problems cleared for a while. Now it will not read the drive
again but indicates a drive compatibility issue. I don't have
a setup disk so I can't get into the bios to look at addresses.
Any suggestions?

You don't give me much hope. I was surfing the net looking for where I might find some documentation and drivers for an HP Draftmaster II, Model 7596A, and The Computer Museum showed up. I've tried the HP web page and called their supportline, but they wanted to charge me $25 to tell me if I could buy the drivers and documentation. If you could tell me, I have a Windows 95, 100mhz system, do they make Win 95 drivers for the plotter or am I wasting my time. I was going to try to buy the plotter from military surplus, but why bother if I can't get the documentation or drivers? Thanks!!!!

I have a CompuAdd 425TFX with the orginal 4MB RAM that I
would like to upgrade to 8MB. I cannot find a source on
the net for an 8MB upgrade. There are several places that
sell a 4MB and 16MB upgrade for a CompuAdd 425TX, but since
the 425TFX came with 4MB RAM, I don't think that the 425TFX
the 425TX are the same laptop. Can anyone help finding a
source for an 8MB upgrade? It will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I have a Zenith 286 laptop and seeking a user manual and any information about parts and maintenance.

#2- trying to install an internal NEC 8X cd rom and getting "Not Accessible" when I try to access it. Running Windows 95, no apparent conflicts. Config.sys has the device and autoexec has the mscdex loaded. Cd rom is setup as the "Slave". Windows 95 does see the drive and loads some drivers but I'm still not able to access the cd rom. I can see the light flashing on & off on the cd rom.

Well my project of resucitating the dead NEC Powermate APC IV (APC-H702) has come to a near finish thanks to those that have helped with parts and information. The only thing I lack yet is a copy of the original MSDOS and setup disk. I don't need the MSDOS, just the machine specific setup programs. I've gotten a setup for an NEC ProSpeed from NEC's FTP but it lacks in a few areas, such as being able to set the machine to high or low speed at boot. The machine is supposed to boot up in 10mhz instead of 8mhz by default but doesn't.

The disk may be marked for an APC-H700, APC-H701 or an APC-H702 or even an APC IV Portable. If anyones knows if a motherboard jumper will easily set it that info would be greatly appreciated as well.

I have it functional with MSDOS 6.22, Windows 3.11, mouse, 2.6mb ram, 14.4k modem. A complete unit except for the annoying slow speed start up.

To all LASER board searchers. I have a wealth of documentation ONLY, on these boards. I have jumper setting, configuration and lay outs. If you need a particular board, try to be very specific. model #, speed, board #, or even if you just have the FCC #, I can tract that down. The more info on the board the better! Since it is in Doc. form, send along a FAX # if you have one. Other wise we will have to make other arrangements.

I have a CompuAdd 425TFX Laptop. I am looking for a source of technical support.
Also, and more urgently, I am in need of any of the original floppy disks, Manuals, or any of the other accessories that might have come with it as new.
My computer works great as long as an external monitor is connected to it, however, the display on the Laptop itself does not display anything.
The monitor appears to be powered up though, just no data. Again it works fine otherwise.

In first place, excuse me for my English. The text was written in Portuguese and translated for English by " Globalink Power Translator Pro ".
I have a CompuDyne notebook model CMPD 3SL/25, with serial number S2-G015122, (at least that is the number that is in a label behind the computer). My problem is that the keyboard stopped of working. I gave orders it here for a technical attendance to Brazil and him it returned without repair. As I am technical in electronics, I opened the notebook and I verified that the connectors that are in the main board were damaged and the connectors of the keyboard were also damaged.
How can I obtain the connectors of the keyboard that are located in the main plate what they are of 16 and 8 ways? Mainly, how I can obtain the printed circuit board of the keyboard that the most damaged is?
Thank you for your collaboration.

A friend of mine gave me three things: A Samsung NoteMaster 386L/25, a CMOS battery, and the cable that was ripped OFF the battery.

All I need to do is take the thing apart, but I need some pointers on how to disassemble a laptop. I was able to remove the following items:

Ram module
Hard drive
Battery Pack

That's it! There are a few screws and a lever that pulls out on one side, but I don't want to _force_ anything apart, for fear of breaking it completely. Suggestions?

To Sean, with the broken Apple IIc drive:

I don't know about getting a new drive, but if you can get
your hands on an Disk //c external drive (the one
specifically designed for the //c) you can take that drive
and replace the interal drive with it.

If you do replace the internal drive, make sure you connect
the cable to the drive properly. The cable supplies both
the data and power to the drive, and if you put it on wrong
(the connector is not keyed), you'll most likely toast the
drive. I know from experience :(

You can't really use an external drive only on the IIc,
because most IIc's can't boot the external drive, and the
ones that can can only boot ProDOS disks...

Good luck!

Seems I had a weird dump of some of my bookmarks (and I haven't run my tape backup in 2 weeks) so I lost the last half of them.

Someone had emailed me a really good source of info and parts on PS/2's but I don't have the faintest idea of what it was or who sent it. If anyone has links to ANY PS/2 info or parts sources, please drop them in a quick email to me - it would be appreciated.

Also still looking for anyone that has a replacement blue LCD screen for an NEC PowerMate portable, model APC-H701 or 702. Any other parts that are specific to the unit are wanted also. I'd also love to get another 701 or 702 for my other son at a reasonable price. I'm trying to set up a unit they each could have for whatever they need as they go to classes after HS graduation this summer.

I have a Compuadd 325TX that has a problem. It boots up and shows a refrence # of A23CA0514, then about 2 minutes later, it spits out keyboard controller failer twice, then reports memory, then says press spacebar to terminate memory test. Then it gives out a gate A20 failure. I could use some help with this, if you can't help, a website or number where I can get help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Compaq DeskPro XL 5100.
My question is as follows:

does anyone out there know if it is possible
to upgrade my 100 MHZ Pentium processor to a 200 Mhz
Pentium or MMX 200 Mhz Pentium processor?

If so, what type of things do I need to do to
the motherboard, firmware system configuration,
etc, to get this upgrade to work.

If this is possible, I am considering purchasing the
Pentium 200 Mhz or MMX processor as appropriate.

I'm trying to get 5 Zenith Laptops Model ZWL-184-97 working for a friend who bought them at a surplus auction. I've narrowed down the lot to the following: Three 'good' & 2 'bad' computers. There are no power supplies and batteries. He did buy another that was complete and works great. Now back to the other 5; they all power up, but none of the C drives boot. I can get Dos 5 to boot off the 360k 3.5 floppys. I don't know if the HD's (20MB) are bad or parked or something. The 2 'bad' ones LCD's seem gone. The other 3 'good' ones seem good to go. I'd like to know if there's any way to 'free' the HD's or if there are any 360k size programs what will run on a 640k computer? They will also be for sale if anyone wants them (He only wanted the 1, but had to bid on the whole lot). All of them have 1200 baud modems. I'm told that they will operate in a voltage range of 12-16.5Volts / 1-2amps. These power supplies can easily be found at your local Radio Shack. After looking at the battery pack, a make shift one should be easy to make also with parts from Radio Shack. These would at the very least make good replacement parts for people who own their own ZWL-184's. Asking price is: $20.00 ea for the 2 'bad' ones and $40.00 ea for the 3 'good' ones + S/H (your choice of method since your paying/est $10.00 or less U.S. postage). These cost around $169.00+ from other sources: http://wwwipp.unicomp.net/c-reset/lap-port.html or http://www.olderzds.com/weekly.htm Either way to sell them or fix them would help us a lot. Thanks again!

He game me a Conpaq 386/25 Portable with a Red Plasma screen, 80 meg HDD, 10 Megs of ram , VGA card, 14" viewable Greyscale Monitor, 14.4 voice/modem. Do you think it's a good deal er what!!!?

I have some questions. Is this computer upgradeable to 486? What kind of ports does it have? And could I use my CD-ROM in it? I haven't recieved it yet, so I only have some idea what I can put in it. If anyone has had any expierence with these computer, I would love to hear about them.

"Glad that I found the CompuAdd forum".
I used to be a proud owner of a CompuAdd 450, which is a
486 50 mhz screamin machine and now I am just an owner.

Recently I tried to upgrade my memory from 16mb ram to 32mb,
and I own manuals! My original configuration was two 4mb ram
sims. My 1st upgrade was a 8mg ram sim to give me 16mg of
ram. The world was apples and oranges until I tried to
upgrade my memory even higher with a 16mg sim. No matter
what combinations of sims I used, anything over a 16 meg
configuration made video display much slower. System bios
did acknowledged the many memory configurations, and my
system is suppose to be upgradable to 64 meg of memory.
Now I was told that some 486 mother boards had a flaw
of this nature, or is this just another reason why CompuAdd
went under? Or is there a jumper that I need to connect?
Does anyone have a solution to this problem or ever hear of
such a thing?

Please Reply, Thanks

Jon

To "Mike" of Phoenix, AZ who's both a bit shy and doesn't complete his email address concerning his dual MFM/RLL drive installation:

If any of this sounds redundant, just recheck and play along....

Did you change the jumpers on the drives to reflect that both are DS1 (B: selection) with a twist cable, or one DS0 and the
other DS1 for a non-twist cable? Ok, you imply a twisted cable on the 34 pin side. Are the twists from wire 6-10 or
10-16? The 10-16 cable is for floppies, not MFM/RLL drives. Also, each drive gets a 20 pin "control" cable and make
sure the position to #1 is correct on all cables.

Now the next dumb question....did you remove the terminating resistor from the C: drive and make sure it exists on the D:
drive? Have the drives been correctly setup in CMOS, partitioned with FDISK and formatted?

Also remember that on DOS versions prior to either 4 or 5 that the partitions can be no bigger than 32mb.

Hi All. Does anyone have any clue as to how to get an old
1990's MegaTrend 386DX to support TWO hard drives. I've changed
the jumper on the back of one of them for the twisted wire as per
Seagate instructions, (Drives are model ST-251 & ST-238r).
Also set the CMOS setup to each drives specs, (Cyl, Sec, Tracks,
ect...). But when it boots it trys to run both drives, then
Post, that the D: drive has failed.

Well if any one out there has any thoughts on this Thanks in advance

Anyone that may be in need of any Epson computer, printer, or scanner software can obtain it directly on line (and free) at the web address of:

It would also be a good idea for anyone that may have an Epson to bookmark the page for future use.

An old Toshiba T1200 8086 Laptop with a 720kb floppy drive I use has the 'parity boot virus'. This has survived formatting the hard drive from a clean DOS disk. In fact, I got so used to the occasional frozen screen with the legend: 'parity check' , I supposed it to be some sort of system message relating to the laptop itself...
Anyhow, I have used Norton Antivirus to clean up all floppies and desktop PC of traces of this virus, so I have no problem here. Obviously, I am not going to input floppy disk files of my written stuff from the laptop to the desktop PC, since any 720kb floppy that has sat in the laptop A drive will have had the virus written to it every hour.
Norton Antivirus boot disk and definitions disks are 1.44, while the Toshiba laptop drive is 720 only. I think booting from this programme may solve the problem.
Any ideas on this please ?
Ian.

Ok, this may be a doozy because I've got a couple of questions.
1) I have an Epson Equity I+ 286 that originally had a 5 1/4
floppy in it. I purchased a 3 1/2 floppy and was told when I
purchased it that it was a high density drive. It won't read
high density disks. I have advised that I need to get into my
BIOS in order to change some of the parameters. I've tried all
of the fun little keystrokes, but nothing seems to work. Can
someone please help?
2) The battery in the above mentioned computer died a long time
ago. Is there any chance that this may have something to do with
my inability to get into my BIOS?
3) I recently aquired a 486 mother board to upgrade the above computer.
I was told that I would need to get into something called my CMOS. Again,
I have tried all of the keystrokes, and I am wondering if the absense of a
battery is hindering me in this as well.
I hope someone can help me.

I am preparing for a missionary trip to Africa and was given an old Epson Equity LT portable computer. When it boots up it shows the following message:
"161 System OptionsNot Set
(Run SETUP in DIAGNOSTICS)
F1 Key to Resume"

Hitting the F1 key results in the system booting up, but there is no directory named "DIAGNOSTICS". I presume that DIAGNOSTICS must refer to a system setup diskette. I have a couple of questions

1) Do you know where can I get a copy of the system setup diskette? (Epson will only help if I call their tech support line and pay by the minute)

2) The system has a buit in modem (speed unknown -- but probably quite slow). Next to the phone in & out jacks are 4 DIP switches with no expalnation of how they should be set. Running the PCTools System Info diagnostic shows that there is a COM1 port, but Laplink shows two (COM1 & COM2) and that there is a modem on COM2, and that the modem passes diagnostics. HOWEVER, I can not get it to dial. Do you know what the DIP switch settings should be, and what the correct modem init string would be for this modem? (Laplink's basic hayes compatable string doesn't work -- it syas that the modem failed to initialize)

3) Any ideas on where I could get manuals for this beast?

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have reciently aquired an old AT&T 3B2/600 running System V R3.2.1. My problem is that the machine has not been in use since 1994 and noone knows the root password any more.
Worse yet they found all the manuals and tapes but not the rescue boot floppy. Does anyone out there know where i can get a copy of this floppy or a way to gain access from the login prompt?
My only other hope is to disassemble the machine, remove the hard disks and access them through my Linux system, not something I want to do.
Thanks for any help.

About 7 months ago a friend gave me 3 portable computers. They are made by Zenith-Morrow with LCD screens, 720 K floppies built in the side, 1 meg memory expansion boards installed, some form of video card with composite and 9 pin vga (?) output and two of them have modems. I have powered up these units and all function perfectly. One of them is like new with the cardboard things still in the disk drives ! A plate on the back of one reads ZFL-171-82. I opened the worst one up and found an 8088 processor.
My question is about the expansion socket on the back.. it looks like a standard ISA socket. Does anyone have some ideas ?? I have plenty of old ISA things that I could plug in to try ie.. floppy controllers, IDE controllers, sound cards, VGA cards and modem.
Thanks !

The power supply is housed under a metal cover, that when removed shows the power supply. it looks like a circuit board. Laser has a website in the Netherlands but no info on older models. Any help is appreciated.

I've aquired a Digital Micro PDP 11/73 computer and several
VT320 and VT220 display units for it. I have an external
disk drive for it, but it seems to have a short in it, and
it won't power up. It also has an internal tape drive.
Unfortunately, I have no software for this thing, and the
hard drive has developed some bad sectors, and it will
not completely boot up. It appears to be running an OS
called Micro/RSX. Does anyone have any install disks/tapes
for this thing, or have any information about where to find it?
Thanks.

Ok Epson Equity/Apex owners that are boggled by where to get a copy of the SETUP program that the previous owner should have given to you. Go the the following site and get the applicable setup program from it:

http://www.epson.com/connects/ftp4.html

Hope this is of some benefit as I just reworked an Equity III and the stupid thing wouldn't take all of the CMOS data from ANY generic or name brand setup utility I used.

Saw a post on Yahoo about floppy drive assignments which helped me get my pc started back toward normality. The floppy cable from the controller card to the 2 floppies has a section in it of 7 wires that is flipped over before the last plug is put on. The person who posted this said that this section must be between the A drive and the controller card. In effect the cable goes to the B drive first , then there is this flipped section and then the connection to the A drive. After trial and error setting the two Teac fdds jumpers both to D1, I was able to load
the OS. Yeah!!!!! Also the CMOS setup correctly Identified the two drives as opposed to having to be set manually. ( AMI 386 BIOS) Thanks to all who have made suggestions about the failure to boot to command prompt.

I have a Zenith Supersport 286 that I got back after it was stolen,
Needless to say The hard drive was formatted and all information was lost, I can live with that
My problem is that the system no longer recognises the hard drive in the setup utility
the drive has no determining numbering or any identification to let me know what type it is
I have gone through the setup for each of the 49 setups for which type it is and still no luck.
All documentation and system disks are lost, The system was prior to windows it only has 1meg or memory
I think it has a 40meg HD, it used to be a great little clunker machine.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Does anyone know where I might find a service company that might be able to help that can be trusted.
Perhalps one that specializes in the old and decrepid.
Thank for any help.

Anyone have 1x, 2x or 4x CDROMs to sell or trade? I need a few for some pending projects for a local homeschool group to upgrade their 286 and 386 machines to run software only available on CD. I prefer caddyless/tray types but will also consider caddy types but these units should be of SCSI or IDE type interface. If someone has a proprietary type and has all the data and software as well as the interface I may be able to utilize it for a machine that has extra open slots.

Also 8 and 16 bit sound cards with or without IDE/SCSI interface are needed.

Of the TRS-80 Model 4 units I've posted here I only have one left, which is suitable for parts or rebuild use. It has an excellent display (green), floppy drives, etc but has two keycaps broken and displays ASCII junk like it may have a bad memory or Z80 cpu chip. Need it out of my way soon, will take $15 plus shipping (40 lbs) for the whole unit or *might* part it out if the offers are reasonable. I'd hate to pull the display and junk the rest though.

Tell your friends, tell everyone who uses the Net.. This is to
inform you of a very important matter currently under review by the
FCC.

Your local telephone company has filed a proposal with the FCC to
impose per minute charges for your internet usage. They contend that
your usage has or will hinder the operation of the telephone network.
In my opinion, internet usage will diminish if users were required to
pay additional per minute charges. The FCC has created an email box
for your comments, responses must be received by February 13, '98.
Send your comments to ""isp@fcc.gov"" tell them what you think. Every
phone company is in on this one, and they are trying to sneak it in
just under the wire.. Let everyone you know hear about this one. Get
e-mail address to everyone you can think of.

Looking for Parts (and hopefully a parts list) for a Compaq Presario CDS 520. This pc (sort of) is non standard. It's got a non standard processor board. The power supply is in the monitor, along with the monitor control boards. Main board slides in the back of the monitor/case enclosure, and hooks up to a connector thats attached to the disks.

Specifically, I'm looking for a power supply board.á It fits inside the monitor.á It has a compaq part number of P-294V-O-C.
á
If you know of any parts suppliers with obscure parts, I'd appreciate it.
á
Thanks.

Can anyone help.
I would like to aquire a "Sage iv" computer. The original manufacturer
was a company called "Sage Computer Technologies" who were based
in Reno, Nevada. The company is now defunct but someone may have one of these
small machines loafing around in some corner proping up books.
If you can help me,it would be much appreciated and perhaps a deal could
be struck along the line of some other obsolete equipment in exchange.

For Gary Preston, re: IBM dot matrix printer model 5152, --------- here are the Factory Settings for those DIP switches: ------------- DIP SW1 ON-ON-OFF-OFF-ON-ON-OFF-ON -------------------------------- DIP SW2 ON-ON-OFF-OFF --------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Regarding Manuals, some of the manuals are still available from IBM. I can give you a phone # to call. I can help looking up the Form-Numbers. But considering there's an "ibm" in your email-address perhaps you know more about this than I do! -------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------- One last thing, there are TWO IBM printers referred to in my manuals, the "Matrix Printer" and the "Graphics Printer". I'm sure the Matrix Printer is model 5152, but I'm not positive the Graphics Printer is not ALSO called model 5152. And there is a slight difference in the switch settings for the Graphics Printer. If the settings I gave you cause your printer to print EIGHT lines-to-the inch (instead of SIX) and page length 12" instead of 11". If you see that happening, then email me and I'll give you the settings for tGraphics Printer. But most likely the settings above are the correct ones for YOUR printer. Let me know if I can be of any more assistance regarding this printer or IBM manuals.

I am trying to help a friend out who was given a Compudyne
computer, model 3SX25, originally bought 4/1/92 that has
an AMI BIOS file dated 1990. My friend said it had booted
fine until he asked a friend if he could delete a file named,
QDOS. The friend said "sure" so he did and he said he
can't boot now. I tried booting from a: drive with a DOS
disk, but it wasn't reading it. I think it actually has
a problem with the BIOS/CMOS. When it comes up, the CMOS
setting have all been deleted and says they need to be
reset. There is no doc. with the computer, so I don't
know the specs for the harddrive. When I pick one, and
try to boot, it tells me the battery for the CMOS is
low. I don't know if this is all related to him deleting
the file, if it is coincidence or what is going on with
the computer. I would appreciate any information from
someone who has a clue what is going on as well as anyone
who knows what the specs for the hard drive are (i.e. #
of cylinders, heads, etc.). Thanks. Linda

To everyone looking for a setup disk for an old computer:
There is a website that has what you are looking for. On this page (which has a wealth of knowledge on older systems) there is a file called: gsetup.exe
This is a shareware version of the IBM AT setup disk, but it also works on many many other systems as well that require a setup disk to enter CMOS and make necessary changes. The site address is:
www.computercraft.com/docs/garbagecanpc.html
This should clear up about 80% of the problems that I see here. Good luck !!!

The Mother board is Assembly #190000-0004 Serial #13644. It

I have invested/investigated my problem with my PC, ZWI 386dx25 processer AMI 386bios Quantam Prodrive 40at HD,A=5.25 teac,B=3.5 Teac (changed to A drive and replaced by sony 9702 3.5 floppy) the drive controller has no recognizable (to me ) brand name but has SD M 003461 (K) PM-510c made in tiawan ROC printed on it and a sticker with ??91032389 on th back.
there are 3 jumpers J1,2,3 and changing J1 causes a FDD controller failure,J2 caused a HD controller failure and a message that no operating system was found. J3 had no discernable effect when changed. The ribbon cable for the floppies goes to the 3.5 first and then a section is flipped over and then there are 2 plugs attached one of which plugs on to the teac 5.25, the other will plug on to the 3.5 floppy but this resulted in a wiped disk 1 of DOS6.22 when tried.
The system will boot and allow CMOS changes and save them and will not get to the C prompt. A copy of DOS 5 and an original of dos5 and an original of DOS6.22 will allow booting and runs install up to the screen which says files asre being copied and then asks for the disk1 to be put in (its already in) and when tried again will repeat ad nauseum. Exiting at this point will give a request for the disk 1 and press f3 which results in a drive not ready error abort retry fail?
Exiting from setup after the first screens will allow A> and change to C> dir reveals all my files on the C (HD) except that dos directory has only 12 files and 3 of these had been updated on the day when the program was added to fix a port problem. I have chaned config.sys back to an older working previously version and the same with autoexec.bat in case this was the problem. I deleted the dos files which were updated by the fix16550.sys program and still no progress past the setups screen when booting up
Does anyone know where the problem lies in all of this?
Does anyone have information on Zyx-ware-international of San Jose CA
This is getting out of hand for a system which seems to have all of the essentials in place, ie an accessable bios good video CPU HD? Floppies?. The sony is brand new!
Thanks in advance

1. I have an old Osborne Executive which seems to be operational, floppies light up and seek, but using a CP/M operating system disk from an equally old Columbia set of disks (circa 1983) it does not recognize the disk. first question is, does the Osborne executive require its own special CPM disk and if so, where and how can I get one?
2. I also have a 1990 vintage IBM PS/2 model 80 which has a error message 601 (bad floppy or controller). Inasmuch as the PS/2 can only recognize, diagnose and set up drives and peripherals from the floppy reference disk (which I have), what do you do with the computer if the floppy doesn't work? I already tried another floppy that was working in a different machine, so I assume the problem is either the controller or the power supply.
Question no 2, then, is how can I get data in and out of this machine. It has a SCSI, serial and parallel port, but I have no way to set up any peripheral device, as the single floppy is not working.

PC Jr owners - I have available a PCJr Color Display for sale or trade, cheap. PC Enterprises wants $189 for one and I'm sure there are very few around, which is why I'm posting this for the last time. I am getting ready to rework the connector to make the monitor a CGA/EGA compatible for a friend's machine but would rather search for a good home for this and dig up a generic CGA or EGA monitor to use in place of it. Once I modify it I doubt it can be reworked back to a PCJr useable monitor.

Looking for $50 plus shipping as this is like and working good. It would really make one of the remaining Jr's without color into a nice(r) machine. It weighs roughly 25 lbs, maybe a bit more after packing in foam.

Anyone interested should email me soon for further info. Other contact info is on my webpage (click on my name in this posting).

First I wish to thank the person(s) that make this page possible for allowing me to find new homes for otherwise useless (to the average person) computers.

Next I wish to update my lsting of the TRS-80 model 4 computers I have for sale or trade. At present I have one left, for parts or possible repair. It does power up but gets ASCII garbage on screen which tells me a possible processor or memory problem. It also has two broken keycaps due to the sloppy way the previous owner/holder had it stored. It is loaded with all the parts and would be a good machine for someone to work on and repair or to have as backup/spare parts for their model 4. Let's face it - these parts are getting harder to come by everyday.

What do I want for it? Roughly $15 plus shipping or I may accept trade of older 8 bit sound cards or 1, 2 or 4x IDE or SCSI CDrom drives (you still pay shipping though).

I won't lie, the unit is heavy - 41 lbs average. Shipping can run from $10 to $30 within the US, dependant upon where the unit goes. That's not bad when you consider what a CRT unit goes for at a salvager.

Anyone interested should email me soon for further info. Other contact info is on my webpage (click on my name in this posting).

For Steve Jenette:
There is no such thing as an IBM XT setup disk because there is no CMOS setup. The IBM XT was configured with DIP switches on the motherboard that set the number of drives, type of video card, presence of math coprocessor, etc. The hard drive type was set by jumpers on the controller card.

As I am now on a more modern system I would be interested in selling this system to a good home, for a very reasonable price {less than 25 dollars} plus shipping. Again it is a very clean machine. Thanks to all responses.

I have a standard 286 PC I would like to use as a dedicated
answering machine (among other things), but I don't have a
hard drive for it and I don't want to spend much (any) money
if I can avoid it. I also have a complete and working PS/2,
Model 50z, which has a 30 meg hard drive. Anyone know if
there is any way to use the PS/2 drive in the 286 PC?
Thanks.

Hi,

I have an old (1987) IBM 5170 PC/AT, with a 5 1/4 inch
floppy drive. I replaced the floppy with a 3 1/2 inch drive.

Now I need to get into the setup screen to let the system know
that this changed, how do I get there, I tried several key
combinations during startup, but nothing worked.

Please help,
Groets,

I work in the Archives at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and came across some magnetic cards (2) from about 1976. They're shaped like punch cards, but look more like floppy diskettes with no cover. They have been in the sleeve I'm sure since they were made, so they just might read. If anyone has a reader. I've contacted every professional source in Houston, and IBM, with no avail.

Re: Xerox 800 ETS (ETS stood for Electronic Typing System). While this is not a bona fide micro computer, it qualifies as an obsolete piece of office equipment. It was the very last (and very expensive) dedicated word processor that appeared on the market in 1977 (wih great fanfare at the time by Xerox) just before the advent of word processors with SCREENS (e.g., the Displaywriter). As a young secretary, I typed on one of these machines in 1977-78, after attending an intensive one week training course sponsored by Xerox. The machine came in 2 configurations, mag card or magnetic tape (cassette). Does anyone know anything about this machine, if any are still in existence, etc.? I tried browsing using keywords but found nothing. A visit to Xerox's website proved futile. Thanks!

A friend has an Epson Equity III 286 machine that needed a battery and now a setup disk. Anyone have one they could ZIP and file attach or tell me where to download one? It would be greatly appreciated.

I also have 2 Tandy TRS-80 model 4 computers (complete) for sale or trade. One is working great and the other for repair or parts (memory problem and two busted keys on the keyboard). They run 40 lbs UPS (I just shipped another one earlier) and cost around $25-30 to ship cross country, less the closer you get to the central US. I'd like to get $15 plus shipping or equivalent for the parts/repairable machine and $25 plus shipping for the good working one.

Email me for info on the Model 4's or to reply to my plea for the Epson setup disk/program.

To John Hill RE: CompuAdd 425 TFX.
The specs: Cyrix 486 SLC2 50 MHZ processor with additional Cyrix math coprocessor, 4 meg 80 NS non-parity ram(72 pin SIMM), 2400 BPS internal modem, Gray scale monochrome screen. Serial, parallel, external mouse and keyboard ports. Should have been preloaded with MS DOS 5 and Windows 3.0, along with proprietary power management software. The AC power adapter should be either 24 VDC, 2.2A, or 21VDC, 2.2A output.
Note the memory uses standard non-parity 72 pin SIMM, (1 slot). It won't accept memory faster than 70 NS.
According to my manual, it will only accept up to 16 MEG ram. I have a 16 MEG in mine and it reads it as a 4 MEG. No amount of fiddling with the CMOS settingswill change it. Go figure....... Anyway, I hope that sheds some light.

I added a startup utility which was supposed to correct a 16550 UART problem trying to get a com port or modem init problem solved.
The machine is a 386 sx with DOS5 and since I added the line in the config.sys file (Device=fix16550\c:path) The machine will only boot to the screen which shows the memory ports drives etc. and then quits before the command prompt comes up.
The bios is AMI 386 BIOS. I don't have a bootable floppy. Can I interrupt the processing of the config.sys or modify it in some way?
TIA

RE: Seagate 120 meg drive.
Thanks to all who replied. I will be heading to the Seagate site and will try the jumper settings that have been sent as well.

For those who thought I might have neglected the CMOS settings, that was actually the first spot I began as I have a motherboard that will do an auto detect hard drive and this drive is very different from the one that is normally in the unit.

This was one of those situations of fixing a friend's machine for free and putting more time in than the whole thing is worth even when new.

Now if any one can tell me the jumper settings for the video card, I can get it out of the house and my wife will thank you all! :)

Thanks again to all, Greg

Does anyone have the setup disks for an HP Vectra ES. It's a 286. HP has the setup files on their web site, but they are olny for use with a 3.5 1.44 meg floppy. The ES only came with 5.25 360k floopies. Thanks in advance!

Sir,
When a boy in my school moved back to America he donated his 512K Mac.
The school was about to throw it out when I saved it.
I set it up, turned it on, put in the start up disk. The mini finder cameup
Acording to instructions on the disk I clicked on the SCS BOOT V2.1 icon and was asked for a pass word.
I have got two Winchester drives but with out the password they are useless.
Could you please give me (E-mail) A boot disk and software.
Thanks Niall

I have one donated Mac 512K that probably needs a new power supply, because it was connected to 220V instead of 110V (it came from US). I'm trying to repair it, so I'm looking for the schematic to the machine. Does anyone knows where I can find it on the net or have it?

I have what appears to be a TRS80 color computer 1 ,as it looks
just like the picture shown under that title on this website.
I have plugged it up and it seems to be working fine, though
I have seen clearer pictures, but I suppose it is on par with the
standard of it's day. It only came up in basic ,which is not
surprising since, I do not have the data cartridge or whatever
that plugs into it.
Make me an offer. I will gladly trade for hardware ,especially
a VGA or better Video card ,or VGA or better monitor, or a good
ide harddrive(any size). I have a Tandy 1200 external modem
also. It does not have a power cord with it. I plugged it up
using the power cord from a Nintendo and the lights came on.
I really haven't fooled with it much other than that.I am
fairly certain a power cord from Radio Shack would work.
Neither of the items I have described are in mint condition
by any means ,but they appear intact.
thanks

Does anyone know who made LASER Computers? I have a LASER PAL 286.
At least that is what the label on the bottom says.

I need to know how to set the motherboard DIP switches so I
Can add some RAM. It has 4 SIMM sockets and I don't know if it needs
parity or non parity RAM. Every setting I've tried doesn't work.

It seems like someone is always looking for documentation on
older computers, so I intend to have a webpage with as much
information as I can find. Of course I am having a link to
this page. Send me any info or docs you have. I would also
like to ask if anyone knows if republishing documentation online
constitutes a violation of copyright ,or any information you could
give me.
Thanks

I need a command interpreter (command.com?) for an Kaypro XT. I had backed up the files and was then removing files in preparation for giving this computer to a grandchild. I accidentally deleted the system files. I have them backed up, but I can't get to the "restore" option until I can boot the computer.

I am trying to find out what kind of memory was used with
the Intel 4004 chip. I believe this chip was never used for
anything but the Busicom calculator that it was designed for.
My guess is that the memory could not have been core. So what
sort of memory was used? What was the size? And more importantly
what was the latency?

I'd really appreciate if anyone could help me answer these
questions.

Thanks!

I have some IBM PS/2 microchannel (MCA) token ring network adapters that I've pulled from a group of
machines I bought from a loal government agency, and I'm reselling these machines as individuals, hence I have
excess cards. Here's a breakdown of them:
2 each FRU 74F9415 short cards
2 each FRU 93F0331 long cards
1 each FRU 53F7748 long card

If you have a couple IBM PS/2 model 50-90 machines you wish to network or add to an existing token ring
network these would work great for you. I'm asking $5 each (plus $2.50 s/h)or all 5 for $22 (plus $5.00 s/h)
I would also trade for 1, 2 or 4mb 30 or 72 pin PARITY SIMMs.

Have IBM PS/2 55 386/16 am servicing for 8 year old handicapped little girl, and in need of setup disk or good copy of one. Have successfully loaded DOS 6.22 and Windoze 3.1. HDD is only 40 meg and is quite full, would like to put in larger HDD and more RAM, IBM of course. This thing scares me a little, as it has been my expierence with later IBM stinkpads and their proprietary stuff that IBM's don't like to see much generic stuff. I would hate to break this machine and her heart. Any help would be appreciated by me and her dad.

Wow, hi I had soo much luck wiht my last question that I thought I would put another. I have an old 286 laptop. When I turn it on it does it's memory check and and asks if if you want to go into the CMOS press enter. 1 time out of a hundred it works the other 99% of the time it gives me a keyboard error a HDD and a FDD error and a COMS error. But it doesn't give all the errors all of the time. I turn it on and it might give the to drive errors. I turn it off and back on again and maby to other errors. Any susgestions?
