Hi there,
I recently bought an Olivetti word processor at a yard
sale which is in excellent condition (the Olivetti that is)
:). It worked great until I erased the hard drive because it
contained a lot of personal files which were none of my
business and now I can't get it to print. I formatted the
drive and installed Dos 6.2 It had 3.1 on it. I tried
everything but nothing will get the printer to work. If I
tell it to print a file it says it is printed but nothing
happened. I tried all the mode stuff with no success. The
only thing I can figure is that the config or autoexec file
had something in them to run the printer. Of course they're
gone. I should have saved them but I didn't. Can anyone tell
me what is needed to get the printer going again? I would be
forever in your debt. It is an " Olivetti ETV 260 ". Made in
the early to middle 80's. It recognizes lpt1 and com1 and I'm
assuming the printer is on Lpt1.
Any help with this problem would be much appreciated. It
is a great looking machine and heavy as hell. I just love it.
It does deserve another chance. You have a great day now. :)

I recently got a Commodore 2002 monitor and didn't receive the cable with it. I need to get the pinout information on the monitor to construct a cable myself. It is the 9-pin CGA style connector, so the pinouts for a PC 9-pin cable might be the same. eg, which is ground, R, G, B, HSync, etc. Thanks

I just happened across an IBM PC from 1981 sitting by the garbage
chute in my apartment complex. It looks almost like new but is missing
the monitor and keyboard. It has one 5.25.floppy drive and three
cards installed. Where can I get info to get this beast back to
useable condition (even though I am a Mac devotee) and how
much can I upgrade this puppy? Can I install a hard drive?
Are there any apps that I could find that still run on this thing?

Many Thanks for any wisdom that comes my way!!!

I have a macintosh iicx that I am donating to my non-computerate
mother for email. I have an external modem for it, but I am wondering
if anyone ever made a NUBUS internal modem for this. I have 2
slots available. I do not need speed - 14.4 or even 9600 would
be ok.

To 'Anonymous':

Apparently my last post offended someone enough to flame me via e-mail. First, my message was originally intended as a private reply to the poster, but stuff happened and it got posted here. My intention was not to upset anyone, just express my opinion.

However, someone felt incensed enough to send me a nice message that used "F**K" in capital letters several times and even made reference to what he thought of my genitalia. I would normally just take this up with the sender, but he apparently forgot his real e-mail address and had to use "anonymous@nowhere.com" or something like that.

Amazing how brave and tough you can be when you hide behind a bogus name.....

Anyhow, I apologize for any incovenience. After all, we collect this stuff for fun and history's sake, don't we? At least that's why I got into it.

Attention everyone and your brother:

At the top of the Obsolete Computer Helpline it says, "Obsolete". There is a link to it from the main page that uses the word "obsolete". If you bookmark the page, it is saved by the title, which is "Obsolete Computer Helpline". For those that have not taken the time to notice that or just do not care to do so, please do. I believe I speak for many readers when I say that words such as "Pentium", "MMX", "Windows 95", etc. do not belong here. Perhaps a definition of Obsolete is needed and could be posted somewhere under "Obsolete Computer Helpline". It says, "old", but I don't think a Pentium and the like belong.

Thank you,
Jason Whorton

I am upgrading a Compaq Deskpro 66M (486) with 24x IDE CD-ROM.
I was told the IDE controller will not slave a second device. Has anyone done this? What is the most cost-effective way of upgrading? Should I:
1. Get a new controller or motherboard.
2. Toss/Return the IDE CD-ROM and get A Compaq CD, a SCSI CD & controller, or a parallel port CD

Thanks,
Mike

I am reassembling an old 386 computer for the local fire dept. to use to keep their financial records and logs of calls.
I need a motherboard for a Leading Edge 386 D3 SX computer? This board is different from most I've seen in that the expansion slots are not on the motherboard but on a separate board that is plugged into the motherboard. So, any expansion cards have to be plugged in horizontally which means the openings on the back of the case for expansion cards are also horizontal instead of vertical. The connectors for the mouse, monitor and serial and parallel ports are on the motherboard along the back edge. Any board with this same configuration would probably work. If anyone knows where I can get one of these I'd really appreciate an e-mail.

PS. I was able to purchase from them cool connecting tables and software to allow me to transfer files from my old Apple IIc to my new IBM Clone. Files that took less than 128K on the apple in apple works end up taking up to 5 MEG on the IBM. Apple did have a better idea didn't they!

I recently acquired a very interesting computer. The case is about 8" high, 2' deep, and 3' wide. It has "MCS 100" and "CG CompuGraphics" on the front. The case weighs around 100lbs. The monitor is designed for single-page viewing (tall and narrow) and has "MCS PowerView 10" written on it. If ANYONE can tell me just what this thing is and it's purpose/specifications PLEASE let me know. Thanks.

I have about half a dozen PS/2 model 55SX machines that I need to sell
or trade. They're all in excellent working condition with hard drive,
floppy drive, built in video/com/lpt/mouse ports. Can accept up to 16mb
of ram and runs a 386SX-16 processor.

These are tested and in good physical and working condition. Just add
SIMMs, keyboard, mouse and monitor. Great replacement for a flaky unit
or to add a machine for the kids. All have MS-DOS 6.2 on the hard drive.
Reference/Setup disk included.

Asking $30 each plus shipping. The Dallas realtime clock chip on the
board or even the floppy drive are worth that alone. Trades of other IBM
ISA, MCA or VLB equipment will be considered.

I also have 55SX motherboards in great condition for $10 each plus
shipping. Shipped in foam padded mailer with setup/reference disk. Just
open your dead machine and replace the board.

A relative of mine brought me some old computers from
the garage he works in. There were a XTs and a 386SX PS/2
and one machine that looks like a microwave oven to me.

The manufacturer in something called TeleVideo and on
the corner of its keyboard reads TS-800. On back of the
machine there is a connector (25 pins in 2 rows),
another connector (about 15 pins in 2 rows) and a
special connector for the keyboard. When I try to
turn it on I hear some humming but get no picture.

Does anybody know what this thing is?

Lower Down this list I posted a message about a 486. Among the offers of help, I also received this e-mail:

>Hello. I don't have an answer to your question, but I did >want to thank you for the front of your mesage "not >exactly obsolete". I have had to wade through a few Win >95 questions in my reading and I was beginning to >wonder if the people had even read what the thing was >about.
> Sincerely,
> Jason Whorton
> www.oldcomputers.com

I actually agree with this pretty strongly, as do many people who send similar comments BY EMAIL. But email won't talk to the people who make postings about their P266 not liking Win95. So I have decided to post this (admittedly long) message: If your computer is not obsolete, go somewhere else. Try www.nowonder.com (I have given this as my URL even though I am NOT connected with them, so just click on my name)

I hope you don't mind me taking up space with this, but hopefully it will save space in the long run by keeping the helpline for its original purpose.

I was given a Compaq Portable (the original one that looks
like a sewing machine). It works fine, except the original
video card is missing. If I stick in a regular CGA card I can
drive an external CGA monitor, but I'd really like to hook up
the internal monitor, for obvious reasons. Is there a way that
I could take the internal monitor cable and hook it up to a regular
9-pin CGA plug, or does anyone have any working CGA cards for this
specific machine they'd be willing to sell me? Thanks.

Question: Does anyone know how I can get into CMOS? I have tried "F10" but to no avail. I read somewhere to hit F10 after the cursor moves to the top right side of the screen, but it doesn't move to that spot.

Since the memory has been removed, I get an error message right at startup. I can boot from a floppy but can not move to "C" drive (I'm trying to use a small Quantum 170mb drive.) I will be installing Dos 6.22 and Win3.1 on this machine.

I have downloaded some files from the Compaq site, but when I go to expand them onto disk, they are asking for a 720kb disk and won't write to a 1.44. I'm not sure that they will help me get into CMOS.

I don't plan on using the Compaq system. I just need to get into CMOS to make changes.

Thanking you in advance for your help.

Vincent

RE: bonger@geocities.com's posting -- Perhaps if your friend would ask realistic prices, he might sell more. The used computer guys in my area can't give 13" monitors away, and sell 14" AST's for $35. A 15" Sony goes for $125. 14.4 modems are worth $10 tops, and I've seen several PCjr's go for $35 with software. If he can get $400, more power to him. For $35 plus shipping, I'll buy the jr.

I have a 486 dx 33 with 8 megs ram. I would like to upgrade the ram to 20 megs. There are 2 banks with 4 30 pin slots in each. They currently have 1 meg simms in each slot. I want to remove 4 of the 1 meg simms from one bank and replace them with 4 meg simms but when I do that the new memory isn't recognized. The board markings are: ASI353814, and 486-VLP. I can't see any more identity marks without looking at the underside which I don't want to do. There is a jumper in the bios area with 4 or 5 pins. Currently the jumper is not connecting any pis. Is there a jumper that needs to be set for this? Can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks, Jon

I have a friend who has a bunch of stuff to sell. Some of it isn't too obsolete but oh well. They are as follows:
Apple Image Writer II $85
13" SVGA Emerson Monitor $110
386 IBM $75
386 ARC $75
386 Leading Edge $75
IBM PCjr w/monitor & keyboard $300
14000bps fax modem $20
2 2x CDrom's $20ea

I don't know of the condition or what all software/hardware he has for them, but if you are interested I'll ask. I believe that the 386's are operating computers, but I am not sure if they have keyboards or monitors and the like. These prices do not include shipping costs, which you will be expected to pay also. Please fell free to email if you have any questions on any of these items.

One more thing; he also has lots of software for several platforms (Win95, Win3.2, MAC). If your looking for some software please contact us.

OK, this computer isn't exactly obsolete, but with Win95 slowly taking over the world I think I am justified in posting this message.

I have a 486 that I don't know very much about. One of the things I don't know is why the screen colours seem to change so much. Sometimes when I turn it on they have swapped round, so that dark blue is now light blue, green is pink, light green is white (a pain in help files!) etc. It also changes spontaneously, especially when I use DOS programs in windows

It uses Windows 3.11, and the display drivers I currently use are the VGA that come with windows. The colours go back to normal temporarily when I swap between VGA and VGA (version 3.0). I don't know what graphics card I have, or whether it is capable of SVGA, but if it would help a lot, mail me and I will go and pull it out and see what it says.

Thanks for reading this long message, and for any help that you can give!

Pete

Still working on the Magnavox Headstart 486/sx w/75mhz overdrive. Thanks for all of your help with the BIOS keys. (look down a few messages) but now I have run into an even more interesting problem.
the computer will scan the drive on startup, but will not boot from it or even access it (via DOS) once booted. I get a "general failure" error. I've tried 2 floppy drives, 2 cables, and 2 controllers. (onboard, and the one on the SCSI card I put in for the HD. (an Always Technology IN2000))
Any Ideas?

I've got an Osborne 486DX100 machine circa 1994 with a conner CSF425A internal disk. I am having problems trying to install another disk (Seagate 850MB). As soon as I set the 2nd disk option in the CMOS the system won't boot at all. This happens even with the new drive powered off.
I've checked the jumper settings on the conner drive, is there anything unusual about the disk controller ?

Thanks and regards

I have a Microsoft Mouse from 1983 or 84. It may be the first year it was made. The only picture I've seen of one is at the Microsoft Museum web site for 1983. I have the box, the interface card and everything is still in mint condition. I even have the foam inserts. Two questions. 1)Is there anyway for me to find out (printing on the box, serial number, etc) that would tell me what year this was manufactured? 2. Any idea on what this may be worth, if anything?

The only info on the box is "Part No. 99G37" the address is 10700 Northup Way, Bellevue, Wathington 98004" The mouse itself has no serial number on it, but the interface card has "Copyright 1983" on it and is Part No. 00G37A.

...I don't hav an AST RamPage. It's an AST SixPak Premium. It has more DIP switches than jumpers. REMM 4.70 can't adjust it. I want to make EMS emulate XMS (I have REX.SYS, and Qemm's EMS2EXT.sys) to make my 5meg machine an even 6meg.

Recently at an auction, I purchased a "DEC pc 425-ST". Unfortunately, it has no memory. Do you need 60ns memory. I cant get standard 4MB EDO SIMMS to work. Also, does the memory need to be arranged in pairs?
Another problem is that it does'nt seem to have an CPU. If it had an intel one, I can't find it. There is however an Texas Instruments Chip.

Thanks

I have an aztec sound card. I got all the jumper settings
from their web site and set up all defaults. Windows finds
this as a sound blaster 16. The problem is that it plays
wav files just fine but will not play Music CD or midi files. I copied the win95 drivers from their web site but
when I try to install under "add Hardware" and select have
disk. I get message that disk does not contain necessary
information. Any ideas of what I am doing wrong???

I'm trying to find jumpter settings for a friend's CGA monitor.
I have a couple of video cards but haven't got a clue what the jumpers are set for, or what they should be.
1. Video 7 CL-60410-32PC=E (I imagine it's a cirrus)
2. Cirrus Logic CL-60510-32PC-F
3. Video 7 435-0005-07 (or possibly CHIPS P82C434A

Can anyone provide jumper settings for CGA/EGA or color/mono?

Ok,

For all of those 'Cross Platform' people... here is a nifty little
utility that we all need if we use IBM and Mac side by side..

goto ftp://ftp.nec.au
and look for the 'Trans Mac' utility and d/l it. This will let your IBM READ and WRITE to Mac floppies. Only works with CD-ROM, SCSI Tapes, Hard Drives, and 1.44 M Floppies.

Very slick utility, brought to you free by NEC Computer.

I have a MIDI data filer (an Alesis Datadisk SQ) w/a 720k floppy. I insert the proper disk, press format, the display shows the 80 track being formatted, but when I go to dump info into it, is displays "disk unformatted". The guy at the music store said he would assume the drive is bad. It is a Fujitsu M2532K-19A 720k drive from 1989. Would it be a floppy interface? It uses the the standard 34-pin cable and small 4-wire pwr. conn. Will pretty much any 720k drive meeting those specs work. I'm desparate to get it fixed this weekend so my band can practice(we judt bought this week). Thanks alot!!!!

To "Split" and anyone else needing a good bookmark for pinout diagrams, go to http://junitec.ist.utl.pt/hwb/ for "The Hardware Book" which is an online databse of the most common pinouts and connectors for many computer types. This is a mirror site of the original as the original seems to be gone, but is just as good.

It's an excellent source for C=64 owners.

We have a Teleos Model 20 running into an old Rembrandt II/VP,
connected to a T-1 line which we use to connect to another
remote Rembrandt for video conferencing. We disconnected
the Teleos in an attempt to connect it to a Picture-Tel unit.
When we reconnected the Teleos Model 20 to the Rembrandt II/VP
we discovered we had lost our configuration for the Rembrandt II/VP.
How can we reset the Teleos Model 20 to the default configuration.
Have gone through the reset procedure and it says that the
unit is reconfiguring to the factory default, but we now
cannot connect to the other end through the Rembrandt. Is there
an internal switch in the Teleos to reset it to the factory
specs, or a way to reset it so we can reinstall our configuration
for the Rembrandt, or possibly reset a CMOS type battery internally?

Hello!
I have an old 386-25 which
(1) Will not recognize the mouse, Checked mice and their
associated drivers on another machine, so the drivers and mice do work. Bought :( a
new I/O card (just like the old one) which runs the IDE hard drives and floppies OK.
Took the Setup down to minimum: 640K RAM, no hard drives, booted off the floppy and had config.sys set to
minimum for buffers and files. Still no mouse activity. Several SYSINFO programs that
I have recognize the Com1: and Com2: ports and the configuration settings do change
when I load the mouse drivers. SO . . . .
(2)After the machine checks RAM I get a DRIVE C:ERROR Press F1. When I do it boots up okay.
I can "bypass" this in CMOS with "WAIT FOR F1 ON ERROR" disabled. But why? The RAM test is
long enough to allow the drive to do its "internal self check" (?) SO . . .
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Okay, someone out there may have an instruction sheet they could scan for this:

I have around half a dozen ISA parallel/serial expansion cards that I need the jumper data on. These are only marked on two lrger chips as Winbond W86C551's and the only other marking is screen printed at the bottom near the slot. It reads "DIO-222-OHM REV. A" which I assume is it's model number, probably stands for Dual I/O model 222. It has a COM A fixed to the filler card at the backbone and a COM B on a ribbon on an expansion plate. There is a LPTA and LPTB just the same. It has a set of jumpers on the lower side below the lower of the two Winbond chips and it's amrked as JP1 and has three rows tall and 13 rows wide. The left has 1, 14 and 27 screened on the pc board and the right side has 13, 26 and 35 screened on.

I've used a few that were previously set as LPT2, LPT3, COM3, COM4 but as I come across machines that need a different setup I'll need a set of instructions. If anyone has a copy that they could scan and attach as a graphic, or could fax to me (502-756-6991) or could photocopy and mail to me I'm sure I could work out something to repay them.

I just got a fairly old computer- 386-16,80 meg hard drive,
and what I think is a mono video card. The problem is, I hooked it up to a cga monitor and it didn't syc at all. So I borrowed my friend's green screen from an 8086. It now shows a little text, but it starts about 2/3 of the way across and wraps back in reverse larger text. On a real long line, it starts to come back on the left again. And if you get about 23 lines on the screen, it starts shaking so bad, you can't read it. Using CLS clears the shaking until the screen fills up again. I guess I still have a mismatch between the video card and monitor, but I don't know for sure.
There's also a problem with the RAM. There are 4 Simms (I'm pretty sure they're 256K each), but only 512K shows up at boot and using MEM. I tried shuffling in all different ways, and took out 2 Simms, all with the same result-512K. Would this be something in the setup program?
Sorry I'm such a novice.
Thanks for any help on this. I'd like to make it a slow Win3.1 or a fast DOS 6.22 machine. Maybe I should try to find a cheap VGA card and get the video right, so I can see the setup screen properly, huh?
Thanks again.
Tom

As a hobby I fix up old pc's. I am wondering if anyone has
jumper/switch settings for the following I/O cards

AT MULTI I/O PLUS CARD - a bank of 4 and one of 6 switches
plus one jumper; has two serial and
one parallel port

an I/O card with one goldstar and two windbond chips; has two
serial ports, a parallel and games port. There are 4 (or 5)
banks of jumpers in the following configuration:

xx xx
xx xx
xx xx

xxxxxx xx
xxxxxx xx
xxxxxx xx
xxxxxx <- this seems to be another bank
xxxxxx

labels are left to right up and down
jp2-3, jp4-5
jp8-jp13
jp6-jp7
jp14-j19

The last card is a real oldy. It has a battery on it (clock)
the identification on the top of the card is
"DIO-200 REVA MADE IN TWAIWAN R.O.C"

All the best and thanks in advance

I am amazed at its speed with the V20. If anyone has any information about the input and output connection on either of these machines I would appreciate it very much. -BackPack Dual-Speed External CD-ROM - Parrallel port interface, drivers, manuals, AC adapter, even original box. The Mitsumi Dual-Speed CD-ROM works well, but the BackPack box no longer works. I think that there is something wrong with the controller in the box (maybe the drivers need updated). I will trade for a working Single-Speed External Parallel port CD-ROM.

- Various XT Parts - Keyboards, controllers, etc. If you're interested, let me know, and I'll send you a list.

-Radio Shack TRS-80 Modem I - Works, manual dial, has hookups for RS-232, and for a TRS-80 color computer (4-pin serial jack). Will even work with a Pentium. 300 baud, comes w/AC adapter. Make offer.

WANTED:
-ANY Info/Documentation/Accessories for Tandy 600 portable computer.

-Older working laptops w/ HD

-External CD-ROMs w/parallel interface

Final Question: Is there any possible way to fit more than 4meg RAM into a Tandy 3800HD laptop? It uses 2 30-pin SIMMS for expansion memory, but when I put in SIMMS higher than 1meg each, it just beeps when I turn it on. Do I need a BIOS update (it has a Phoenix BIOS)?

Thanks,
-Jason

Does anyone have a service manual for a GRiD 1755 laptop?
This thing's living on duct tape and prayers. I need to find out if i've cracked a critical part of the mainboard
when the dodgy little bugger fell off a table. The power
connector has to be at a certain angle to function and the
batteries don't charge anymore. Should I dump it, scrap it,
or try and fix it?

I have ONE copy of Microsoft Windows 3.0 for sale, never used and like new, but the outer shrink wrap is gone. The manual is still sealed and it comes with the original 1.2mb 5.25" floppies. I need to get $15 for this which includes shipping to anywhere in the 48 continental United States.

I can also make and include 3.5" 1.44mb copies if needed for an additional $2.50
to cover the blank floppies and any little bit extra on the postage. I only have the one so the first to ask is the first to get it.

I still have one HP 700/44 terminal left as well, see the previous post from a few days ago, below.

Hey Ho....
Last one for the day.... I have an nView! Corporation "SpectraC" overhead projection panel, a bit old, but still quite useable. Anyways, it is MAC and PC compatible, but when I bought it (second hand) I did not recieve any cabling with which to link to either machine. Soooo, what I am looking for is perhaps a manual, but most importantly a wiring diagram of the cable I need. It is a standard, male VGA/SVGA/XGA monitor plug (HD-15, 3 lines of pins) to a standard, female MAC monitor plug (DB-15, 2 lines of holes). If anyone could give even more assistance than this, I would be really appreciative, but the main thing is a wiring diagram for the cable. Manuals, software, and anything else would be helpful too.
Thanx, yet again.....

O.K., I got another weird one here...
This is Matt Smith again, with another item that crawled up from eons past. This one is a National Semiconductors Corporation "Special Effects Generator". Its Model No. : WJ546, and its Serial No. : 5Y3870. It says on the beast itself that it came from a subsiduary company called the Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. Ltd., and all I was looking for was a manual to get it working. I know its not really computer gear, but I am creating a Video Editing Suite, and this could be useful to it. Anyways, If you could EMail me with possibly how to hook this thing up (i.e., a manual) then I would be most appreciative.
Thanx again....

Hey world... , O.K., I know this is a blast form the past, but I need a bit of help with something I picked up. Its a cassette (standard tape deck) drive, internal, with controller card for IBM's and clones. What I was looking for is a manual, and especially drivers for it. It is a JVC, model : MTS-5201, serial number : 11140195. The controller card's ID is "Controller Board 40508402 REV A", and its serial number is 021037-REV.A1. If anyone out there has any info on this drive, I would greatly appreciate it, especially the drivers so I can get the @&*(*^$^ thing working!

This is one of the strangest things I've seen: I bought a
486dx2-50 at a sale (w/2 1.5 gig hard disks). It's got 32mb
of ram in 4mb, 30-pin simms, and an EISA motherboard. The
POST RAM-Check counts 32mb and reports no errors, but DOS and
Windows 95 both think that there's 64mb of ram, which is bad,
because Win 95 tries to _use_ the ram above the actual 32mb
I have, and it crashes really hard. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Hi, all. I've got a problem. I have an Epson Equity III+
where only CMOS drive types 1 and 2 appear to function.
Trying anything else causes the system to lockup after the
RAM count, and I have to pull the ST506 cobntroller to be
able to boot from a floppy. This is a forty meg drive, and
I want to use the other 20 megs. (They're very important
when all you can put in that machine is a 40.) I've also
got some other questions about it, such as if you can use an
XT-Gen or ST-11R controller in it. (The ST-11R does load
its ROM, but I can't access the drive.) Also, if you've got
the manusals for a GRiD 1755, Compaq Portable III, or this
machine, please e-mail me.

I also have an old 2x Backpack CD-ROM that no longer responds. The Mitsumi CD-ROM in the Backpack is still good-it will work with a SoundBlaster card. Make offer. I have all manuals and box.

A while back in the list someone was looking for replacement Apple 3.5" drives.

Go to http://www.quecomp.com/misc.htm

They sell used 800k drives (internal) for about $10.
Hope this will help anyone in need.

I have a CompuAdd 325NXL notebook computer (DOS 6.22/Win3.1). I can't get the modem to work. Does it need drivers loaded in CONFIG.SYS? I don't have the drivers. I also need a system clock battery and setup software.

Can you please refer me to any help (URLs) on the internet regarding manuals or parts/upgrades?

Thank you

I have a Toshiba laptop, model T3100, which was donated to a local charity. I volunteered to try to get it working for them. I replaced the battery and reconnected the keyboard which was loose. It attempts to boot up, but gives an error:
"error encountered initializing hard drive" then it says to insert the system disk.

I think if I could find how to get into the setup program I could fix it.
Does this comnputer need a "special" system disk??

Thanks Charles

An afterthought on Sheilla Switzer's advice to "DUMP our
286's because they're too slow" (below). I hope this person noted that this is the "OBSOLETE Computer Museum" and the fact that our machines are slow and OBSOLETE is what keeps us coming back. Having several XT class and 286 machines myself, I am not about to just DUMP them because of speed and parts
availibility.

Hi All,

Here is my situation, About 2 years ago, I made a 486
with 133Mhz processor. I bought a 486DX4 motherboard, I
wanted to upgrade the the RAM from 16meg (4 sticks of 4meg
30 pin) to 64meg (2 sticks of 32meg 72 pin). I bought the
RAM, taking out the 16meg out and installing the 64meg.
The system operated SLOWER than with the 16meg. I called
up a few computer places around San Diego and some of the
places told me that there was a jumper to switch from the
30 pin bank to the 72 pin bank. I didn't recieve and
booklet wiht the motherboard so I don't know for sure.
Then I called up another company and they told me that the
motherboard wasn't capable of utiliting the new faster RAM.
Some thing about FAST PAGE and SLOW PAGE RAM. Is there
such a thing as FAST and SLOW PAGE RAM? Also do you
happen to know of a URL for getting a manual or jumper
positions for a 486DX4 motherboard?

Hopefully you will be able to help me out and also if
there is any questions you have that nobody has answered
yet just let me know and I will try my best to help you
out. AND for those of you with a 286 DUMP it and buy a
cheap 386 or 486. Parts for a 286 are to old and to hard
to getand besides that they are SLOW.

I have been running a Sony CPD-1393 14" Trinitron monitor
for the last 6 years without any problems. Just recently my
screen modes 640x480 and below have gone crazy. The screen
violently wiggles from side to side making it impossible to
tell what is going on. This used to happen after the monitor
was on for 5 minutes, but now it happens as soon as I turn
the computer on. I would like to know what could be causing
this, and how much it would take to have the problem part
replaced/repaired.

I AM 100% CERTAIN THAT THIS IS A MONITOR PROBLEM, SO DON'T
SUGGEST ANY OTHER PARTS THAT COULD BE SOLVING THE PROBLEM.

Hi, J.Maynard,
I saw your message on the helpline about your password:
a few days ago I saw a solution on the helpline too,
it was something like this:

Chance the faze of the connector of your speaker (or battery I'm not
shure) then power up your computer and shut down after he came up,
then turne back the connector and then he strat up without password.
I'm not shure but you can look back in the helpline may it was in
march or february.

Good luck,

With greetings from Holland

Greetings Gang.

I have acquired a laptop, a TRAC model 364N. The computer was sold by a company called BizMart, and office supply store chain that was bought out by OfficeMax about 4-5 years ago. I was able to get the computer to work once I rejuvenated the 5V battery pak. However I need the AC adapter/charger that will mate to the 4 pin external DC connector pin. Lacking that does anyone have any information regarding voltage, current ot pin-out information on the adapter. Is there anyone who might have worked at BizMart around that might have some useful input. Any help appreciated. Calls to OfficeMax did not provide any information although they did give it their best.

FOR SALE OR TRADE:

-IBM XGA color monitor works perfectly -needs xga card - great for PS/2 w/XGA card. Will trade for an IBM or Gateway 2000 VGA monitor.

-Hyundai color VGA monitor - 640x480 max resolution -good color - works great. The only "problem" with this monitor is that, being an older monitor, the dot pitch isn't that great, and when doing word processing, the words are a bit blurry. It' s good for DOS games, though. I'll sell it for $80 or trade for an older laptop (this monitor also comes with a 256k Hualon ISA VGA video card, if you want it).

-Various XT parts - email me if you want a list.

I'm still playing with my old NEC ProSpeed 286 (it had a CMOS password set when I got it and I cannot even boot it up).

I followed some advice I got here and disconnected the internal battery for a couple of days. When I reconnected and booted up, it said "CMOS data lost", and I thought "Great!!" However the next thing it said was "Please enter your password".

I am wondering if the password is "burned in" an EPROM or something? Or does the BIOS (this has an old Phoenix BIOS) set a default password?

Thanks much for any ideas,
Doug

Hey there,
Can anyone help me out with a way to get past the setup
password on a 486DLC. I gave it to my sister about 2 yrs ago
and she brought it to me yesterday not working. It doesn't
recognize the hard drive or the floppies and while I suspect
it lost this information perhaps due to a low battery it
sure didn't forget that there is a password installed. If I
put it there or she did it's long forgotten. I tried all the
passwords I could think of but no luck. Stupid me. I
disconnected the battery and unplugged the computer and left
it for 24 hours but it still asks for the password when I
try to get into the setup. :( There has to be a way into it.
Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks

A couple of questions on the Mac Plus (12" mono screen, 2.5 meg RAM)...

1: This machine currently has a built-in 720k floppy drive, and a good external 80 meg HD. There is an external floppy connector on the back. Question is, will an external 1.44 meg floppy work on this machine?

2: If the answer to the previous question is yes, does anyone know where or how I can obtain an external 1.44 for it?

I found several sites on the net with Mac software that will run on that machine, but all my internet work is done on a PC. There's a nice program with the Mac that will allow transfer via floppy between the PC and Mac, but it only works with 1.44 meg disks.

Thanks again. :-)

I have an Epson Geneva CP/M laptop and would very much like to get hold of a good program to pack program files into the ROM format it uses. The only one I have found will only handle up to 16k without errors. I have some 64k CMOS Eproms that will work, if I can get the program files into them in the proper format.

The program I found was called PXROM, and is a CP/M program. Will not work properly on the Epson, or under 22NICE.

If no program is available for that, can anybody send me a detailed description of the format used? I am a pretty good programmer and would have no real problem with writing my own if I knew the data layout required.

Thanks all, in advance. :-)

I have just dusted off an early Zenith Data Systems Model
ZF 158-42, Serial # 604DD0724, FCC ID # BJ486E-554CPU23,
further ID'd as 192 Drive-Type ( Tandon ), circa June 1985.

It boots up off a slip-cased IBM PC-DOS 3.30 ( 5.25 Floppy )
'Start-Up' Diskette, but only 'runs' the CHKDSK program off
the companion 'Operating' diskette. [ It was obviously not
designed to run IBM software ].

I'm looking for someone with a 'working knowledge' of this
platform and interested in using it to hack code; hopefully
to locate a word processor for it, and LAN it into my work-

Just a few quick questions about a Macintosh Classic.
1.) Can I use a Zip drive with the SCSI port and will the Mac auto detect is as it starts up?
2.) Does the Classic have an internal modem, or do I have to connect an external one to the 8-pin DIN port?
I have seen 8-pin to RJ-11, so it made me wonder.
3.) Does anyone have a copy of system 7.1 on 1.44MB floppies that they are willing to make a copy of?
4.) Does anyone have any communications software for E-Mail that I can get a copy of.

You see, the computer I use for Internet stuff is an IBM, and my Classic (which is running 6.0.7) does not accept the IBM formatted disks.

Last, does anyone have an old writing tablet for a Macintosh that can take the place of my mouse. I really don't know where I can buy one new.

That's about it.

For Tamas Feher:

TF> Hello! Do you know something about the IBM PC 370/XT
TF> and the 370/AT computers as well as the IBM PC 3270?
TF> I would very much like to find some software for the
TF> 360 minicomputer mode operation of the above first
TF> two types of IBM PCs.

The 3270 PC wasn't a very spectacular machine. It was basically just a regular PC with hardware and software to emulate a 3270 intelligent terminal to connect to IBM 43xx and 308x systems. There were some much less expensive alternatives, the most popular of which was the IRMA card.

The XT/370 and AT/370, on the other hand were very interesting. They were normal XT and AT systems, but they also contained 3 additional boards for emulation of the IBM System/370 instruction set. The first card had three (3) processors for this emulation: one standard 68000, one modified 68000, and one modified 8087 for the 370 floeating point operations. The second card had 512k of expansion RAM (for 768k in 370 mode) and the third had a 3277 emulation board (pretty much like the 3270 PC). In VM/PC mode, you could run almost any VM/CMS program that would fit in a 4 Meg VM address space. Needless to say, such programs were typically dowloaded from a real 360 or 370 system and were not available on floppy disks. The emulated 370 ran at about 0.1 MIPS and the I/O ran through the PC's BIOS, so it was definitely no competition to the real thing. This product is widely viewed as another IBM failed experiment.

By the way, the 360, 370 and 390 are mainframes, not minis.

While I was checking it out, (motherboard out), I accidentally bumped the switch that says "MEMORY POWER" to off. The orginal one I was going to use was faulty,so I bought another

Many of the people who send me email said call Tandy.
Tandy in Canada no longer carries parts specific to the 1000

Thank you anyway for the suggestions.
One more thing. There have been reported problems with using
older Tandy printers with a DB-25 printer ports.The uni-directional

fine.My DMP-133 is listed as a problem printer and I have had
no trouble.

I am looking for any information on consumables for Wang LCS 15 laser printers. I just bought a mess of them. THey were recently serviced, but the toner will eventually be used up. I have some for sale , if anybody wants a truly unique laser printer. The print quality is great. Win 3.1 has the necessary drivers. I also have a couple complete Wang office systems. for sale or trade. I am still looking for Amstrad pcs 8634 parts, or an interface for their unique disk drive to a more commom machine.

Mother Board for Compaq LTE 5100?

Compaq is saying $600 - any suggestions on ways to avoid that? Are there people who repair? Aftermarket?

Please email response.

Ok Compaq laptop owners (you know who you are). I have a near new unit to sell or trade as follows:

Compaq 2815 Desktop Expansion Base. Looks a lot like the Prolinea line of desktops with a special lid to slide your laptop machine into a "bay". It has no drives (blanking plates) but has an internal contrller for floppy or hard disk and the empty bays. Has a token ring card now in one of the two ISA slots. Includes ports for VGA, LPT, COM, KB and mouse. Has an A/B switch on the rear that I really have no idea of it's use.
This is like brand new but has no manuals.
Looking for $100 cash or will consider trades of items such as memory, cdroms, sound cards (especially MCA PS/2 types), etc or a complete Snappy 3/3 Deluxe setup. I will also consider equal value electronics test equipment in trade especially function generators, signal generators, frequency counters, Fluke DMMs, etc.
Email me direct please.

I just repaired an old Epson HX-20 laptop (rebuilt the batteries). Does anybody have a replacment printer ribbon for the microprinter?
Also does anyone have any add-ons (disk drives/tv display/expansion unit) and software for this thing?

I have an old Dauphin 1075 model 386sx. It was made for Sears Business Center. The Dauphin no longer exists, and neither does the Sears Business Center. It has a setup configuration error evertime you turn it on, saying that the "Standard CMOS checksum was invalid. Extended CMOS checksum was invalid." It reloads the defaults, and I have to reenter the configuration information. After this, it boot's normally, but after a maximum of half an hour freezes solid. It must be turned off for at least 30min before it will run long enough to boot windows with out freezing. I believe that the BIOS/CMOS chip is defective. Does anyone know for sure? The BIOS is Phoenix BIOS A386 Version 1.01 Is there any hope?

I am looking for a source for several things.
I have a MAC Plus; I need OS 6.x.x on floppy disk. I
cannot download it from APPLE's site as I run IBM normally.
Maybe you have this OS and would be willing to copy and ship,
I pay for disks/S&H.

I also have a IICX (Macintosh); I need to find a replacement
for the internal HDD. I am getting (hearing) the "A" chord
indicative of SCSI failure.
Does a SCSI drive work just as good as a clean one? ;)

I also need to find OS 7.x.x to reload this same (new) drive.
Again, I am hoping to find a copy and would be willing to
pay for disk/S&H expenses.

Please let me know. Thanx. (sorry for the joke)

Looking for a good ISA sound card, preferably a SBlaster or SBlaster
pro that will work with a Tandy 386SX33. Tried an ESS white box and it's
crap.

Any source on good used Sound Blaster 16 or Pro cards?

Can you disable PnP on the Creative Labs 16 bit ISA Wave Effects Sound
card?

Two identical 386sx16's. All jumpers and CMOS settings are the same. Both have 4 MEG ext mem, but one will not recognize them. I have swapped simms between the two, but still the same motherboard will not recognize them. Any ideas? Can it be fixed?

Our high school technology class was recently donated two laptops. We were able to build power supplies and get each to run however both need the system disks to be booted. It would be appreciated if anyone could help to locate, or send a copy of these files. The two systems are:
***Toshiba - T1100 Plus
*** Zenith - Model ZFL-181-93
Thanks in advance for any help offered.
