I have just purchased something that looks somthing like
an IBM portable with the screen built into the case . IT
is an Olivetti and has twin 5.25" floppies mounted sideways,
an AMD 8088 processor identical to what is in an XT, 512k RAM
, 4 Expansion slots, and a switch block with only 6 switches
. IT seems exactly like an IBM Portable but since the switch
block only has 6 switches, there must be something different
about it. IT booted MS-dos 6.21 fine and both drives work
(360k. I am going to do some investigating on my own but
if anyone owns one of these or knows anything specific about
them please contact me.

I am trying to configure a PS/2 for someone. We have installed a Digital model RRD42-AA cd-rom (scsi) in it. The reference disk will autodetect the drive, but it can't be accessed from within Windows 3.1. There are no scsi address conflicts, so I can only assume that the generic driver I'm using doesn't work with the drive. Anybody have the correct drivers? If so, please e-mail me and let me know how I can get them. Thanks.

Thinking about aquiring a Victor 9000 computer for my museum. Can't find any information
except it is the 1st, and probably the only, computer made by Victor Technologies, INC.
It was made available in 1980 and have no idea what operating system it has but I
suspect it is a CP/M machine.
Anybody having any knowledge of this computer I would sure appreciate you passing it on to me.
Thank you.

Hi:
I spoke to a man at a garage sale who has an old Compaq LTE Lite 25c that he wants to sell cheaply . The caveat is that he assigned a drivelock password to his hard drive and forgot it. Is it worth buying? Can unlock it myself w/o paying a dealer? (He will provide me witha sales receipt, of course). What do you think?

I just pickup a Zenith 286 laptop. It has the Conner CP343 harddrive in it, the 40 meg drive. The setup on the Zenith only allows predetermined harddrive types to be set in the CMOS. The only drive type in the CMOS has been lost (dead CMOS battery). None of the 49 drive types in the list matches the drive parameters of the CP 343, but this was one of the original drives in the zenith (the other drive was a CP323, 20 meg drive and is Type 2 in the drive types). The setup does not have a setting for user defined drive parameters. Does anyone know what the setup Drive Type number is for the CP343?

I have a 486 PC 8MB RAM that had DOS 6.22/Win3.1. Deleted all the files except Win95 CAB
files. Didn't format the drive. I installed Win95, and now the performance of the machine is terrible.
The machine is very slow. Is it because I didn't format the drive with the Win95 format.exe off the boot disk.
Is there a problem with Win95 O/S working on a drive formatted with an older version of DOS.

For the people that reply to me Thanks a bunch!!!

Also, need a manual, or copy of same, for the Apple Laserwriter. Thanks.

I need help. I have a Macintosh SE that simply refuses to recognize its system software. I'm trying to re-format the hard drive, but nothing is working. I'm looking for advice on three ideas:
1. Connect it to my main Mac and use Drive Setup
2. Figure out why it won't use Disk Tools that came with the system installers (7.0)
3. Connect an external 1.44mb floppy to it and go that route.
Thanks for your time in advance.

Hi!
The school that I go to just upgraded an IBM XT 8088 to a Pentium 133, but they kept the Hercules video adapter that was in the XT. They want to run Windows '95, but do not have the funds to buy a VGA monitor and video card. Is there any possible way to get Win'95 to recognise a Hercules adapter and monitor? Whenever I try to load Setup, it says "VGA not detected", and then shuts down the computer. I tried using a spare EGA monitor that they had with an EGA card that I had, but it did the same thing. I've heard somewhere that an EGA can be used, whigh I believe is the same res as Hercules, but a different signal, but I can't find any drivers that will work.
If anybody has any suggestions (or drivers) for Hercules, your help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
-Jason

Have got nasty old Amstrad 8256PCW with iffy drive,
I have also got a spare drive which also doesn't work.
I have bought and fitted new belts to them, as I noticed the
old ones had stretched.

The drives still don't work though, one will work sometimes
(probably needs cleaning) the other one not at all.

I know these drives are servicable, as I have seen companies
sell 'reviver' kits to mend them, but I wouldn't pay UKú12
for one though.

Any advice/sites/FAQs on mending these troublesome drives?

much appreesh

John H.

PS. I have a another PCW8256 which is working with 512k of
RAM, and single 3" drive. Its just a monitor base, I've got
a keyboard as well, but no printer/software/manuals for it.
Its ideal to replace a dead machine.
ú30 for computer
ú6 for keyboard
will consider sending to anywhere in the world,
if you pay postage.

wordprocessor. He is resigned to replacing it, but he has
diskettes with documents on them that he doesn't have in
hard copy. Does anyone have a) information about the format
of files/diskettes from this dinosaur; b) a Jurassic Park
where one could be found alive so that the documents on his
diskettes could be printed; or c) an old one in working order
that he could buy for not much money for the purpose of
recovering his files? I'd appreciate any information.

Does anyone know how to convert an RS232 cable into RS422 ? Is it as simple as using an adapter (like 25 pin D connector into 8 pin circular?) Or does it involve using a hub (or similar device)? I'm trying to use the 8 pin serial interface on an Epson Color Stylus II to connect to a serial port on my PC.

Thanks for any info in advance.

I see many people asking about old Epson computers, but no replies.
Well, here's a reply! This is Epson's driver download page. You'll
see listings for setup utilities for these systems:

Epson Apex 100
Epson Equity I+
Epson Equity II
Epson Equity II+
Epson Equity III+
Epson Equity 386/20

And a variety of stuff (sound drivers, BIOS upgrades, etc) for the
Epson Action/Epson Endeavor series.

Hello all. I really need someone's help fast! I have a 4-year old Compudyne 486 DX/33 PC. I have upgraded the CPU to a 586/133, the RAM from 4 to 16 meg, and I replaced the original 210 meg hard drive with a Western Digital 5.1 gig. Since the original bios would not recognize larger than a 528 meg hard drive, I used the EZ-BIOS software that came with the new hard drive to overcome this limitation. I now want to upgrade from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95, but Win95 will not install because it doesn't like the EZ-BIOS software it sees. Do I need to upgrade my bios and get rid of EZ-BIOS to do this, and if so, how do I go about it? My current bios version is V1.2R2.0. What is flash bios? Is this what I need? Please help ASAP! I'm stuck in Windows 3.1!

This concerns Microsoft Basic:

I learned alot of BASIC with my Osborne 1. It signed on with the message:

BASIC-80 Rev. 5.21
[CP/M Version]
Copyright 1977-1981 (c) by Microsoft
Created: 29-May-81

I'm now looking at a Tandy Model 200 laptop. Its BASIC signs on with the heading:

TANDY 200 Software
Copr. 1984 Microsoft

Does anyone know if the syntax is essentially the same between these two versions? Can I rely on the Osborne documentation in my efforts with the Tandy Model 200?

I'm asking before I leap because I haven't done any serious BASIC programming since the Osborne days, and don't want to have an exercise in frustration.

Your thoughts ????

Hi there,
I have an old Burroughs computer that I bought at a yard
sale. It starts up fine with the boot disk but I don't have
any other software. It has 2 five and a quarter drives and
I would like to know what it's compatible with. IBM stuff
doesn't work in it. It's pretty old (as computers go) but it
looks cool and I'd like to see it feeling useful again.
Anyway, the big question is, what is it compatible with?

Thanks for any and all help. I and my Burroughs wish you
all a great day.

Problem is, it wants a terminal with an -RS 422- interface as it's

Hello Simo your E-mail did not responce so I give a message back,
in this helpline:

I Think the 301 error is from your
keyboard. Look if there is a XT/AT switchon the back of your keyboard
and activate on XT else you need an old XT keyboard. An XT can't
handle 1.2 or 1.44 MB flopdrives only 720 and 360 MB.
I know were the switch is for: with 1, 7, and 8 you hose the amound of
flopdrive's 1 up to 4. The 3 and 4 are for the amound of memory and 5
and 6 are for your screen monochome or color and two other resolution.
If you want more exact details mail me.

With greeting from Holland

I've got an IBM XT (5160, I think) It has built in BASIC,
and it works OK. What I would like to do, however, is to
use DOS.

When I boot the computer I get these messages:

4E 301
640 kb
Error press 'F1' to continue (might not be the exact words,
but you get the idea)
and a beep on top of all the text
after pressing 'F1' the machine waits for a while
and starts IBM BASIC 1.1

sometimes, I get '601' before the 'Error ...' message.

The 20MB HD, if connected starts to make horrible noise
soon after power is turned on. This can't be normal or
can it? (I did drop it once before I ever tried it)

I've got three 5"1/4 FDDs but can XT use a 1,2 MB FDD?

One more thing, there are 8 switches and 1 jumper on the
mother board. What do the switches do? (I know about the
jumper)

Hope someone has some good ideas...

Is there any way that I can bypass the password, or is there some program that will still read the file if I don't have the password?

Hi there,

I' have this very nice IBM 8580-111 386 machine which is equipped with a Micro Channel Bus.
Now there are a number of cards installed for which I do not have the ADF files.
These are the adapter description files. I know where to find these files, but I do not know
which adapters are in the machine.
Does anyone know a tool to probe the cards in the MCA bus to find out what number they are?
Thanks in advance for all the help.

I have a Macitosh Powerbook 230 Duo laptop & docking bay
has 12meg ram upgrade (16 total) 120 meg scsi drive .

Bought unit used & found it to work fine for about a month ,
until a few days ago , a line appeared horizontally
across lcd screen ( dividing screen int 2 equal parts )

then went to use it today & no powerup ! ( undocked )

The unit will powerup fine in docking bay , but not in undocked mode.
I found that depressing button on rear of unit would produce
Sound from speaker. prior to problem battery was fully charged.

Any Mac techs out there that could offer suggestions ?

I have acquired a Cbm Vic-20 for nothing and have nothing
for it except the box itself. Does anyone know the pin-outs for
the Power Supply plug. I am just going to try making a power
supply for it myself from old adapters lying around.

I have pin-outs for the disk-drive plug and video plug, but
I didn't find one for the power supply and what voltages it
uses and what prongs to plug the power into.

The system board is Revision D, if that is significant or not.

I have an old "IBM personal computer" that was just given to me. I have no use for it, but I'm sure someone might. If any of you collect old computer or just want an old one, let me know. It has all original manuals and some software & games. I think it's about 15 or 16 years old, but it works fine and has the original monitor. I think its runs on DOS 1.0 or 2. Has a small C drive and 5 1/4" drive. Everything works, let me know if you want it.

ItÆs a tower model, but just in the past few
Months it can only run on its side (MB back down)
If I sit the tower up right, the monitor nor PC will work,
If I lay it down works fine.
Switched out the power supply and all hardware and still is not working.
Took the hard Drive out to see if there was a mounting problem and Swapped out monitors and cables, check all hardware connections And even removed the MotherBoard from the back plate.
Any IDEAS?

Oh! Another obsolete computer question. I found some IIe peripherals cheap, and bought a "DuoDisk"
(those rectangular blocks with two floppy drives). Unfortunately there was no cable for it (I looked all around the store).
The DuoDisk unit has a DB-25 connector, while the connector on the back of the IIe (and single drives) have what I think is DB-15.

I take it a special cable is needed. Does anyone know where I can find a schematic to make a cable,
or is there any place where one could buy such a cable?

Thanks much,
Doug

Got a few questions about an Apple Computer I picked up.
Actually it is a Franklin ACE 1200 w/2 drives, a real Apple
monochrome monitor and a real Apple printer as well as some Apple
IIe books and very little software.

The computer has printer/drive/80 column cards all made by
Franklin Ace. The printer ribbon cable has a regular parallel
end. But printer has what looks like a round serial plug.

I want to unload the Franklin and get a real Apple IIe, but will
this printer work with a IIe. Printer has a model# A9M0303 and
has power button on top along with on line/form feed/line feed
buttons.
I have always wanted a functional Apple system. I bought this
setup because it worked (I don't know about the printer though)
and because it is in pretty good shape.
I know just about nill about Apples!
I have a 30 day money back guarantee. I paid $37 for all!

Does any one have a IIe computer w/ 1 or 2 drive's they want to sell,
or a place I can purchase one?

For Yuusuke

Your e-mail was rejected by the server-this in reply to
upgrading an XT to 1998 Technology:

By "upgrading to 1998 technology", do you mean upgrading it
to run something like Windows '95? If so, then no, not
without a major overhaul of the entire unit itself.
The IBM XT is an 8088 based machine, and the most recent
version of Windows which would run on it is Windows 3.0.
Even then, it would run only in "real" mode. You could run
Geoworks (i.e. New Deal Office--http://www.newdealinc.com) on it,
but even then it would be pretty slow.

These machines were designed for a text-only world. If you
wanted to upgrade it, you would have to replace the power
supply , motherboard and all cards in it (essentially
leaving only the case) Also, the case is not really
designed to accept most motherboards, due to the metal
brackets which hold the full-height drives. I have upgraded
one of these machines to accept a 386 motherboard, but the
power supply was already upgraded from the XT's original
135 watts. For more information on the XT, you can try:

I have something that anyone with older machines may want to be able to link their older and newer machines together and share files and printers as well.

Simply Lantastic starter set - complete in the original box in near new condition. Contains 2 Lantastic network cards, 360, 1.2mb and 1.44mb software (v5.1) for both, 25' of thin ethernet cabling, full manuals and worksheets.

Software works in DOS and Windows and is almost invisible. Very easy setup. Requires anything from an original PC to a Pentium having a free 8 pr 16 bit ISA slot. Small amount of HD space required but I think it's possible to install on a boot floppy. I no longer can use this as the machines I have in use require PCI or MCA adapters. I had this in use for a while and it's a very nice system for being so simple to install and use.

Would like to get $30 plus shipping (very light). Contact me by direct email. First come first serve.

I have an old PC. I am led to beleive it is a 286 but I never really tried to find out. If it is it is a very low-end one. Its Hard Drive has packed up for some reason when I unplugged it, even though It is now all plugged back in again properly. So I tried to boot it from a floppy. It came back with "Invalid Address Mark" (I think). This is obviously a problem with the drive as it does it with all my discs. I had to unplug the floppy drive when I took the hard drive out...

I was pretty careful when I was poking around in there, I earthed myself and so on, so I don't think I've fried anything. Does anyone have any ideas? (the floppy drive is 5.25")

Thanks in advance,

Pete

some of you with the older PC/XT's might be interested in
expanding your memory, so
I'm just pasing the info along. You have to get a 74LS158
chip (around $0.25 from any electronics catalog) to put
into the U84 socket, plus eighteen 256K ram chips for
banks 0 and 1. You install the 74LS158 chip in U84, move the
old RAM from Banks 0 and 1 to Banks 2 and 3, then install the 256K
in Banks 0 and 1. Then you have to jumper E2 (near where the
power connection is - use a small wire and some solder to join
pins 1 and 2 togther.) Then remember to set SW1 to 640K by setting
rockers 3 and 4 to off, and you're done. E-mail me if you
need help - happy ramming!

One of my friends picked up a used Compaq Prolinea 575e. It was pretty much barebones, so I've added a cd-rom, soundcard, modem, and some extra ram. His computer is still extremely slow with some applications, so I suggested a new video card, as his is an old onboard cirrus logic. I need to know how to disable this video card to add a new one. I assume its a jumper setting, but he doesn't have any of the manuals. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there!
I recently acquired an IBM PS/2 Model 25. It appears the hard drive has been formatted, and I don't have a boot disk. I would be very thankful if someone could e-mail me the system files I need to start the machine (config.sys and autoexec.bat).
Also, any ideas on why the PS/2 keyboards won't work with my Pentium. I have two keyboards, they are very stout with the clicky keys and I'd like to use one of them with my Pentium.
Thanks for your help.

Hi!

I received a Fujitsu scanner. It looks like it is some sort of SCSI, but it doesn't have standard pins. The connector has three rows of 62 pins. I was told that this might be some sort of proprietary connector for SUN machines, or that the scanner might have come wiht its own proprietary SCSI card. A search of the Fujitsu web sight didn't help any. Any tips out there on how I can find a converter of where I can find the proprietary card (if it exists). Hate to throw this out.

To Don Goff and BunnyHopper,

Actually, the Colossus (1941, 1944), the Z3 (1941), and the Mark I (1944)
all predate the ENIAC. ENIAC was the first ELECTRONIC computer, not
the first computer. Among other things, Grace Murray Hopper was
programming the Mark I before the ENIAC was even completed.

Hello,

Here a question from holland.
I wonder if I can ask a technical Question like this.
I have two IBM PS2 50z computers and they both have the folowing problem:
If I startup the system it wil stop after some minutes, sometimes it
will give an errorcode 110, 105 and 00000(s) and once it gave a sign likes a
music note or a key. I did't find in the errocodelist. Sometimes it wil automatic
starts up again but then it stops direct after starting or while starting.
I've tryed to run the test from the referencedisk but it took too lang to get
a report (the machine stops before finishing).
I called with IBM Holland and they said it is an plymer parrity or memory problem.
Then I replaced the sims with one I know it's OK (from my PS2 70 portable) but
they still keep stopping after a few minutes. Do I have to replace both
motherboards or can I replace some parts and then with part(s).
If you can give me an answer I will be very glad !!

With greetings from Holland

To BunnyHopper:
The name of the first computer invented was ENIAC, and
it was completed in Nov. 1945 and cost 486,000 dollars.
It was 90 ft. long and weighed 30 tons. ENIAC stands for
Electronic Numerical Integrator Analyzer and Computer.
It could perform 5000 additions per second, 357
multiplications per second, and 38 divisions per second.

The bibliography is as follows:

Hello,
I'm looking for a little info!
1. I have a Data General laptop that is used daily. It works great
with one little problem. When I power it up the Harddrive doesn't
always spinup unless I literaly pound the daylights out of the thing
on the back topside of the case. It acts like the bearing is froze.
Is this repairable or should I look for a replacement drive.
Where can I find one?

2. In a second-hand shop I have found a Commodore computer that
I believe is an IBM clone. It is housed in a Desk top case
with two 5-1/4" floppys. It is labled COLT on the front and
(I think) Model CT/10 CT/20 on the back. It looks as if there
is serial/parallel/RGBI ports on the mainboard and a 5pin(?)
keyboard connector on the right side of the case. Can't tell
if there is hard drive inside or not. No monitor or keyboard
is with it. What is this thing. Never seen or heard of one.
I love old Commodores. Had a VIC20 and still have a C-128.
a 128.
Any help/direction or info would be greatly appreciated.

As it only has an 30 MB harddisk I thought in putting a bigger harddisk on it but I found out that the data and the power cables were together.
Can anyone tell me how can I put a harddisk with a separated data and power cables in it ? If I can do it...

Just thought of this as I posted the message below. The Micro House tech ref program is a Windows 3.1 program.

Sam Fishel <sefishel@msn.com>
WA USA - Thursday, April 16, 1998 at 03:10:43
Noticed many requests for jumper/switch settings for cards. A good resource is the CD which came with the Fifth edition of Scott Mueller's book "Upgrading and Repairs PCs". The CD contains a demo/sample version of Micro House Tech ref library. It contains several hundred i/o, video and hard drive controller cards settings and diagrams. For older stuff like listed here I think the ballpark hit rate is one third'ish or so, or at least close enough model wise to make intelligent guesses.

The book itself is also a good reference for older computers. I've seen the it (5th edition) at used bookstores. Currently I think Mueller's book is in 8th edition (the CD is different in each edition? so I think the Micro House demo was only distributed with the 5th ed, but I don't know for certain.)

I do have one spare copy of the book and CD (thought I had lost the CD in a move, later found it, of course). Please email, if interested.

BTW if you visit the Micro House web site, they have good general info, but no dice on getting a free search for a card or motherboard. Their product looks great, but a bit pricey for general users.

The apple 2gs's power supply doesn't work, and I need software for all the rest so I can make a buck on them. Any info on the power supply for the Zenith notebook computer,
model number ZWL-184-97? Also, the disk drive: 1.44 megabytes or
720 kbytes? Any documentation? Any ways to find existing power
supplies or should I make my own with specs (needed voltage and
current...probably 12-18 volts at around 2 amps...or so it appears,
but who knows?). Byron Caloz

I have my dads old tandy 1000 TL/3, and software. The thing won't boot
up, so I volunteered to take a look at it. I can't get the dam thing to
do anything. He's sent this unit to texas, twice, and they send it back saying it
works fine, but when he turns it on, it doesn't boot.

As for the software, I have the following on 3.5" floppy:
tandy cat.#25-1603,
MS-DOS/GW-BASIC and supplemental programs, ver.03.30.23
#1: DESKMATE address,dictionary,hangman,install,startupdisk,teachme,text
#2: DESKMATE calender,filer,formsetup
#3: DESKMATE music,sound and telecom
#4: DESKMATE pc-link,tl3setup and worksheet
#5: DESKMATE draw
all version 03.05.00
and tandy (no cat.#) SMARTDRIVE Installation-backup diskette

He's got the 40 meg harddrive (smartdrive) A.K.A. Seagate ST351 A/X and
extra ram chips for a total of 768kb, instead of the standard 640kb.

Here's my problem: at power-on, the system does the memory check and
displays memory size=768kb, for a second, gives a short beep, the hard
drive makes that "rrr-rrr-crunch-crunch" sound, and then displays the
following:

BIOS ROM version 02.00.00
Compatibility Software
Copyright (C) 1984,1985,1986.1987,1988
Phoenix Software Associates Ltd.
All rights reserved.
( flashing = )

and thats it......no keyboard response, no accessing floppy drive light,
no nothing. Them idiots at radioshack want us to send it to texas so
they can charge us another $268.00.
I put a couple of his data floppies in my system, and my norton
anti-virus imediately kicked in, and reported virus found, but the tandy
floppies were OK. so I don't know whats up with this thing...maybe the
hard drive is infected or something.
If anybody has any ideas on getting this machine up and
running, I sure would appreciate any help.

I have a Compuadd 425tx. If anyone has the owner/operator manual for this machine, I would be interested in hearing from you. Does anyone have the keystrokes for entering the bios (Phoenix). Was this machine manufactured by Compuadd( I know they are out of business) or was it made by another company that may still be in business? Can the pcmcia slot Card and Socket services Phoenix ver 1.02 be upgraded cheaply and simplely? Does anyone know what pcmcia modem card would work on this machine without upgrading the card and socket services version. Two more questions: What does the FN key do on this machine? I tried installing newer card and socket services software ver 3.0 and got an error message, cannot locate adapter, whats the adapter? this machine uses a Databook controller. Thanks for any help. I was given an IBM PC Jr. about a week ago with a monitor and two keyboards.
It did not come with a power supply or any cards though. I am wondering if
the infrared card can be removed and used in a modern PC which has pin outs
on the system board for an IR receiver. I don't know much about the
technology but if I can find out which pins do what, then I could possibly
match them up and connect them to my PC and use the "Freeboard". I'm not too
cheap to by an IR keyboard. I just like to do this kind of stuff...
Please let me know if you think it's possible.
Thanks in advance.

1. Can this display and card be used on the new motherboard?
2. Also can it be programmed (using VB or C++) for custom messages?

Hi.

I'm attempting to install a Plus Hardcard IIXL 105 mb (circa 1990) on a
generic 486 DX2-50 system with an AMIBIOS (circa 1994). When the system
boots up, the POST works ok, then attempts to autodetect the hard
drives. It finds the Maxtor 250mb fine, then pauses for about a minute,
and then freezes when it gets to the hardcard. If I remove the hardcard,
the system boots to the O/S just like it is supposed to. The hardcard
jumpers are at the defaults, but I tried all the other settings, and the
same thing happens. How can I fix this, or is the hardcard toast? It
worked fine in another system last week.

Thanks.

I have a mystery HD and need to know the format of it.
It has a power plug on it, and 24 and 40 pin connectors on it.
An MFM/RLL drive uses 20 and 34-pin connectors, so what kind of drive
is this. IT is made my MAgnetic Perpherals INc. and the
model # can't be found on any list I have looked on.
The model # is 94208-75. The TYPE is 47.
Any info on this drive would be appreciated.

2) I have another drive (ST-238R) that has alot of seek errorrs
on the drive. I have tried re-formatting the drive but
they come back a week later. Would low-level formatting the
drive again help this problem or possibly make matters worse.
I would much rather have a sick drive than a dead one if you
know what I mean.

I would appreciate any help people could give me with
these questions.

I recently obtained two machines, apparently minis, marked
'MAX 8500', apparently a model name, and 'ADP', which is the
logo of a company that makes payroll software and such.
One of the machines came with two full height hard drives, a
tape drive, an asynchronous communication card, what apears
to be a networking card, a cpu card based on four AMD 2900
bit slices, and two drive controller cards.
The second is identical exept that it has three hard drives
and is based on a proprietary McDonnell Douglas Computer
Systems Company microprocessor. Most of the hardware in both
machines also appears to have been manufactured by MDCSC. I
have not been able to boot either of these machines, and AMD
and ADP have both been unhelpful. (AMD no longer supports
the 2900 chips and ADP only writes software.) I have not
been able to contact MDCSC, and I'm not really sure whether
they still exist. If anyone has documentation on this
class/series of machines or any experience with them, I
would really appreciate it if you would contact me.

Thank you.

Gary,

You can use DRIVEPRO from Microhouse to solve your problems.
This is a great piece of software which enables you to use
almost every harddisk (MFM, ESDI, IDE, SCSI) on PC's without
BIOS support. Even drives that seem to be faulty or even broken
can be revived.

Hi everyone - I just wanted to let those of you who responded
to my inquiry about getting files from an MFM to an IDE drive
know that I managed to do it with DOS's INTERSVR and INTERLNK
programs. These (or Laplink) were the overwhelming number of
suggestions I got from everyone. However, one of you also
pointed out a program called 3_drives which can be found at
Simtel as 3drvs260.zip (I think). That allows you to
have both MFM and IDE controllers in at the same time, but
the catch is that you have to know how to reconfigure the MFM
controller card to an address of 170h. Since I didn't have
the info on my cards, I tried the interlink, which worked
very nicely.

Thanks again to everyone who wrote and I apologize if I don't
get to thank you
personally as there were a lot of letters coming in.

Isn't this an awesome page - thanks also to the webmaster!

Howdy all...

I have an old CompuAdd 316nx Laptop (386sx-16 - circa 1990) that I'm in need of assitance with.

#1. I recently tried adding a new 540mb HD to the unit, & found that it's BIOS HD settings are locked. It has Type 44-47 left blank, but unlike most current systems, there appears to be no way to get into them to add the 540's parameters.
I found a repair center that handles CompuAdd.. and KNEW how to do it, but they refused to tell me the trick.. and wanted me to send it in to them for a mere $120!!

SO.... Does anyone know of a DOS utility somewhere that will allow me to change the HD bios settings??? Does anyone have an original Setup disk for this model that may do this?? Any Suggestions??

#2. The unit came stock with 1mb on the board & I picked it up w/an additional 1mb memory card installed. I would like to upgrade to at least 4mb (they DID make such a card) or 8mb (not sure if ever made)

This unit didn't use standard SIMMS.. it had a small 2"x3" card with an end connector that plugged into a slot on the left side of the unit above the optional modem slot.

SO.... does anyone happen to have one?? or come across a source for one?? I've called numerous memory dealers, and so far, no luck.

I know...It's an old toy that I've had for a long time, but it's in mint shape & it works great still... just need it for DOS database I use in the field... extra memory would be a big help...

If you happen to have a module kicking around.. please email me (w/price)

Hi,
i am "working" with a micro PDP 11, and I would like to transfer files from this PDP to a PC, or a mac. I have a connection, wich is working quite well, and not too bad on the pc. But I don't have any program like Kermit on the PDP to transfer files. The question is: even if I can find the Kermit program on the web (I am looking for it, and if you have an adress, please send it to me!) how will I be able to transfer it on the PDP?
Another solution would be to find a program enabling my PC to read floppys from the PDP... does this kind of program exist?
any comment or other solution are WELCOME!

I do have some games that I can load and play but that's it, nothing else. Do you have any knowledge of how to fix this or could you please, put me on to where I can find some software to do some basic word processing.

Seagate ST-277R RLL hard drive - electronic failure

This drive recently started to make terrible banging noises at boot up, and the head stepping rate has increased dramtically. The stepper motor itself is OK (I tried another), and the drive is still useable but runs extremely hot because the stepper motor overheats. What is the generic part number for the 3 chips that drive this motor? The Seagate part number is 11721-501, and Seagate won't give out any information. I haven't been able to find another ST-277R or ST-251 to cannibalize the electronics from it.

Does anyone have any info on a Highscreen laptop? It is a 386 DX33. I opened the thing and it took 10MB of SIPPs (Single In line Pin Package), is missing either the coprocessor or the actual 386 chip, has a Conner CP30084E 84MB HD, a 1.44MB Floppy drive, VGA card, and unfortunately,
a European-style keyboard {QWERTZUIOPU), 2 COM ports, an expansion port, a parallel port, and a 9" screen.

Unfortunately, it is from Turkey, and I think that it might be loaded with Turkish software, keyboard specs., etc.
By mistake, I ripped out the CPU fan. [radioShack should have them, I guess]

When I turn on the computer -which has no battery- I get just a blank screen. A main chip is missing, only a ceramic one remains.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Chris

I'm back!! with two more questions: [but not urgent ones :-) ]

1. Does anyone know if drivers are available to use the Amstrad DMP2000 printer with a PC? I have it pluged in and it sort of works, but obviously the Win3.1 "generic" printer driver doesn't let me use most of the printer functions.

2. You've all seen the Psion thingies? I would really like one of them, but it seems criminally insane to actually buy one unless you are going to use all its new functions. I wouldnt. I would just want to type in text and get it out again, preferably into a PC. The important thing is the size. Surely some company back in the mists of time must have made something that would fit the bill? Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks very much in advance. A always, this is probably the most useful web site I go to.

David Forsyth
asked about moving info from MFM to ide drives.

Interesting question David. I suspect the MFM wants to be
the master, as does the IDE. Can you jumper the ide to be
a "secondary"? Alternately, select boot from floppy, long
enough to get the system up with both controllers?

You could cheat, and dump the MFM contents to tape or zip.

Also, put MFM machine on a network briefly?

Use lap link and two machines?

Use a big box of floppies?

post your findings, if you get it to work.

Sorry, I realise this is question is not quite relevant, but this is the only helpline I have ever got any help from, and I've answerred a few as well.

My question is, is there any way of getting rid of the "My Computer" Icon on the Win95 desktop. It seemed Bill liked it so much he decided to stop us getting rid of it. Even if it can't be got rid of, I would like to change the icon (I would make a special blank one) so you can't see it. There is no obvious way of doing either of these.

So, any ideas? Maybe a program I can download? I am reasonably confident with editing the registry.

Many, Many thanks, This is a great service, it really is,

Pete

I have an IBM AT Multiprotocol Communications Adapter, new, in the original carton, with the original vinyl booklet
and 5.25" disk for sale. It's only missing the cable which can easily be made from two 25 pin d-sub connectors (1M, 1F)
and a piece of cable.

Anyone in the US want or need this? $10 which includes the postage. It goes to the big dumpster in the sky if no one lays
claim to it by Friday the 10th.

Hi. I am wondering if I can install a 3.5" floppy drive in a COMPAQ Portable III (286 12MHz, 640k RAM). All the drives for sale say they need at least a 386! What's up with that?

Also, if anyone has any extra software (Win2.0, DOS 5.0, etc.) on 5.25" floppy, E-Mail me and we can bargain. And if you have an extra 3.5" drive just sittin' around, I am in need of one.
Thank You, Chris

I have an IBM which is fairly old, but inside there is a 386 25Mhz CPU, Co-Processor, and the BUS slots are what appears to be PCI but a bit too small. The memory boards are huge (8Mb in total) and an expansion board with 72pin simm slots on it. The Eprom has a version of IBM basic on it. Its VGA and the keyboard connector is PS/2. I want to find out any information i can on this computer if anyone can help. thanx.

The "obsolete" priest is at it again. Got the vision problemed solved in great shape. It's called Close View and Lapis TV Board. Works like a charm and Ican read my MacPlus from across the room without trifocals. I may loan it out for a portable bilboard. It is just aboslutely super and Mac Plus and the 128 (and me) keep rolling along.

Now, something new pops up. I'm told by the young "whippersnappers" that ALL manufacturers and purveors of software have "assumed" that the country has gone CDRom drive. Do you find that to be true in your area? Now, how did that happen? No one asked me if I had CDRom and I don't....and probably won't. So what do I do for internet acccess software and other applications. Do any of you know WHERE I can get software on discs. Do any of you have any for sale, begging, borrowing, or no, don't say it. I'd like to get some different apps for a BRAND NEW MACIIsi who has come to live at the rectory. Any ideas or sources. Blessings all. Please let me hear from you. I'd like to enter the new millenium with NEW software on discs...... Hi Francesco.

I have been studying the running of stepper motors from a PC and have found some circuits for the drivers and controllers. Most of the sources say that you can run programs from old 286 and 386 etc. computers after they are generated with a CAD/CAM on a newer machine. I just bought a Tandy 1000 TX complete with monitor for 20.00 and it has two 3 1/2 inch floppy slots in it but it did not have any of the documents with it. Is this thing a 286, 386, or what kind of a clone or wierd piece? I could use any help I can with this before I get around to tearing it to pieces just to get the drive motors out of the floppies. It looks real nice but I don't know what compatability it has to programs from our 133 Pentium P-5 Win 95 machine. Is it junk or upgradable? It has no modem. I have no boot discs. Help! I have three IBM PS/2 model 70 386 computers. Real nice.
A total of eight were donated to my school because Ford replaced them with beter ones
I have the three that didn't work
They all have a Micro Channel bus.
Anyway I would like to restore at least one of the three to working condition, even if I have to part out the other two. so far the first has a card in the bus that has a video connector, which allows you to connect a second monitor. I determined that by booting up the one at school that works and has the same card
anyway that first one will not boot. does not even beep. the Hard disk does spin up, as well as the fan. the power light also comes on. the HDD doesen't click like the ones that work
Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance

XT CONFIGURATION: IBM PCs, XTs and thier clonez do not need a setup program. They are configured by setting switchez located on thier main board. By checking da state of those switchez, da processor "knowz" What devicez are attached. The PC has two banks of eight switches each, while da XT simplified thingz greatly in having only one bank of eight. The possible combinations of these switches are too vast to go into here, but there are many sources for this info. (Do da math, 16 switches = 65,535 different combinations possible).

*** Atari 800's 810 Disk Drive ***

The Atari 800 works great still (with cartridges), but the 810 disk drive just continues to run and run, without doing anything constructive. Would love to go through all the old software I wrote many years ago. Any ideas on how to fix, who to contact to fix, or if anyone has a working one and is interested in selling it? Your help is appreciated! Thanks!

I have a Mac Portable whose hard drive has died. I managed to make a Ram disc and put Sys 6.0.8 on it along with Eudora and a small word processor. I thought that Sys 7 may be better to have on there but it turned out to be impracticle. On reinstalling Sys6 the backlighting no longer works!! If i boot off a floppy (Sys7) the lighting works just fine. Help!!!! Any sugestions (Pram has been zapped etc etc)

I have purchased a used Compaq 15 inch SVGA monitor that needs to be degaussed. It is digital controls but there is not a built in degaussing function. I understand that a strong magnet placed near the screen will accomplish this degaussing. Would some one explain the process to me. Thanks.

Is it legal to sell used software as long as you don't
intend on ever using it again?? I have a lot of software.
100's of dollars spent on software I no longer use. Just
want to know if its legal to sell?? I don't have the original
boxes that the software came in nor the receit, but I do
have the original instruction guides and perhaps a few boxes..
all of the original CD-cases. Most of the games are 91++.
A few are 96 and 97. Legal to post something on a local
bulletin board about selling some of my software??

Hi,

having this Phillips P2000C CPM portable (abt. 15 kgms)

I'm looking for some CPM boot flops and also basic or other
language to get the IEEE-488 interface running.

There is also an HDD connector on the rear, can I attach
a harddisk? If so, RLL, MFM or whatever. And how?

In response to those needing Leading Edge items and those that might need it in the future, you can get help with parts, software, drivers, etc at the following unofficial support site:
http://www.primenet.com/~fwagner/le/leading_edge.html

Leading Edge is out of business but being supported by someone not connected with the old company. Sounds like the company name didn't fit too well, huh?

After talking to a completely labotomized tele-clerk at UniSys today, I'm hoping someone may know what I need....

I have a small 486DX-66 PC made by UniSys in 1995 that has the model of 486-DBA/2...I need a power supply card, which is of course proprietary for this small machine. Anyone know of a knowledgeable UniSys parts dealer or anyone have a 486-DBA that is gutted and has a working power supply? I wouldn't mind buying a few either if anyone has these exact units.

Email me directly please.
