Apple Posts $708 Million Loss -- As readers in the United States agonized over their tax forms last week, the folks at Apple found themselves staring at a $708 million quarterly loss, the second worst showing in Apple's history. The bulk of the loss comes from Apple's $375 million purchase of NeXT Software and a $155 million charge to cover "restructuring activities."

Although the numbers sound intimidating, especially since the company's deep reserve pockets are now significantly shallower, the press hasn't jumped back on the "Apple is dead" bandwagon that keeps rolling along Infinite Loop. This may be due to several elements that support a gradual success of the company's restructuring plans: operating expenses were down $32 million from last quarter, and down $65 million from the same quarter last year; business sales climbed 35 percent over the first quarter; and PowerBook sales accounted for 22 percent of total revenue, up from 10 percent. For the year, Apple's revenues totaled $7.1 billion, down 28 percent from $9.8 billion in 1996. The net loss for 1997 reached $1.0 billion, compared to an $816 million loss in 1996. Though the $161 million loss is nothing to crow about, without the charges Apple took related to the acquisition of Power Computing's Macintosh assets, it would have been a $24 million loss. Also positive was the reduction in recurring operating expenses to $353 million, down from $408 million in the third quarter of 1997 and $505 million in the fourth quarter of 1996. Helpful were the strong sales of Mac OS 8, which has sold two million copies since its July release. The $1.0 billion net loss for the year is alarming, but remember it contains restructuring charges of $217 million and $450 million in write-offs related to the NeXT and Power Computing acquisitions. Without that $667 million in one-time charges, the 1997 $1.0 billion loss drops to $333 million. [ACE]

The reorganization is expected to cost Apple at least $125 million next quarter, as well. Apple also announced plans to pursue broader licensing of the Mac OS and simplify its product line, possibly withdrawing from low-end and some mid-range markets. Supposedly, these markets would be opened for clone makers, although the ability of any clone vendor to meet demand in the low-margin, low-end market is unknown. Although the Wall Street Journal reports Apple has been shopping around for a buyer, Apple maintains it is not for sale, and analysts don't see a problem with Apple holding onto its core markets in publishing, home, and education. The good news continues, with Apple reporting late last week that they posted record revenues and unit shipments for the fourth fiscal quarter. Apple's revenue for the quarter was $2.14 billion, a 21 percent increase from the same quarter last year. Of course, revenues don't mean much if expenses were equally high, and although not impressive, Apple turned back to profitable ways, with a net income of $2.7 million, somewhat less than the $97.6 million the company made the same quarter last year. Needless to say, earning $2.7 million is better than losing hundreds of millions, as had happened earlier this year (although the net income for the year was $86 million). Apple attributes the decline in net income to the fact that gross margins declined from 42.7 percent of sales to 25.7 percent of sales.

Revenues for the quarter equaled last quarter at $1.4 billion, gross margins were 25.7 percent (the highest in three years, thanks to the Power Macintosh G3s and PowerBook G3s), and Apple CFO Fred Anderson said that company has almost $2 billion in cash on hand. For the fiscal year, Apple's revenue totalled $5.9 billion, with net earnings of $309 million, marking Apple's first profitable fiscal year since 1995. Although total revenue dipped slightly from the same quarter a year ago, Apple's nest egg grew by more than $300 million to a total of $2.3 billion in cash and short-term investments. Apple's gross margin for its fourth quarter was a healthy 28.7 percent, but the Q4 earnings reflect one-time gains from restructuring and seemingly perpetual sales of shares in ARM Holdings plc.; without these, Apple's net profit would have been $90 million. International sales accounted for only 35 percent of Apple's revenues this quarter. Although Apple's results technically beat analysts' expectations - after issuing a warning a few weeks earlier to reduce those expectations - Apple attributes the revenue slump to costs associated with product transitions and limited availability of the PowerPC G4 processor from Motorola. Apple Announces Less of a Loss -- Apple released its financial results covering the company's first fiscal quarter of 2001, posting a better-than-expected net loss of $195 million. This is Apple's first quarterly loss in three years. As expected, the company gained $49 million by dipping into the seemingly bottomless barrel of ARM Holdings, plc. shares, selling 3.8 million, and by selling 1 million shares of Akamai Technologies stock. Excluding the investment gains and adjustments made to Apple's bottom line through accounting moves, the net loss would have been $247 million, in line with the company's earnings pre-announcement in December. The company shipped 659,000 Macs during the quarter, a significant drop compared to the 1.12 million units sold in the previous quarter and nearly 1.4 million systems sold in the first quarter of 2000. On a positive note, CEO Steve Jobs and CFO Fred Anderson reiterated Apple's strong cash position of more than $4 billion and reported that channel inventories have been improved to about five and a half weeks. Anderson also said that Apple expects revenues for 2001 to be about $6 billion, in line with 1999's $6.1 billion, but well below 2000's $7.98 billion. [JLC]

For its second fiscal quarter of 2001, Apple Computer last week announced a net profit of $43 million dollars, or $.12 per share, on sales of 751,000 Macs. That number was helped slightly by $89 million from Apple's sale of 23 million shares in ARM Holdings, plc, which more than offset an $86 million charge for a write-down of Apple's investment in EarthLink. Apple has only 8 million shares in ARM Holdings remaining, but selling shares in ARM Holdings has done wonders for bolstering Apple's finances over the last few years. Although this quarter's results don't compare well with the $233 million profit ($.64 per share) on sales of over 1 million Macs from the second quarter last year, they utterly crush analysts' estimates of $.01 per share that followed last quarter's $195 million loss. Apple's cash and short-term investment position remains strong at over $4.1 billion.

Credit for the improved results goes in part to Apple's cost-cutting measures and lower component costs, but more obviously to the popular PowerBook G4 Titanium, which sold 134,000 units in the quarter, far better than its PowerBook G3 (FireWire) predecessor in either last quarter or the year ago quarter. The PowerBook G4 Titanium also helped boost Apple's gross margins to 26.9 percent, still below last year's 28.2 percent. Sales of the Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio) were also stronger than last quarter, at 250,000 units. However, the iMac couldn't quite match the Christmas quarter with 300,000 units, and the iBook - the model most likely to be revised soon - racked up sales of only 55,000 units. Even with Apple's price cuts, the Power Mac G4 Cube managed sales of only 12,000 units. The most interesting lift to Apple's revenues came from Mac OS X, which accounted for $19 million.

Some thoughts about Apple's financial position: the company's fortunes may be relatively independent of the larger computer industry, perhaps because Macintosh purchases are more commonly individual rather than corporate decisions. Also, note that a compelling product like the PowerBook G4 Titanium can sell well even in a cool economic climate. In contrast, the Power Mac G4 Cube - despite its elegant and quiet design - simply doesn't offer sufficient advantages over either high-end iMacs or low-end Power Mac G4s to entice buyers even after Apple dropped its price. We'll probably see the Cube either benefit from a significant revision or disappear entirely by the end of 2001.

Apple Reports $106 Million Fourth Quarter Profit -- Apple Computer surprised both analysts and markets last week by announcing its strongest fourth quarter in nine years, with a $106 million profit on a whopping $2.35 billion in revenue for the company's final fiscal quarter of 2004. Moreover, Apple shipped more than 2 million iPod music players during the quarter, and the quarter represents a startling 37 percent revenue increase compared to the same quarter last year. The results include a $4 million restructuring charge. Gross margins for the quarter stayed high at 27 percent, and international sales represented 37 percent of revenue. Significantly, Apple's retail store revenue was up 95 percent from the same quarter last year.

Despite a delay caused by shortages of G5 processors, Apple says the new iMac G5 is off to a strong start; Apple shipped 836,000 Macs during the quarter, more than half of which were iBooks and PowerBooks. The 2.02 million iPods Apple shipped represents a 500 percent increase over the same quarter a year ago; some 6 percent of those iPods were manufactured by Hewlett-Packard as part of the companies' production alliance. What's stunning is that Apple moved over a third of all iPods (5.7 million) ever sold in just the last three months. Apple Revenue Balloons to $3.5 Billion in Third Quarter -- Apple released its financial results for its last fiscal quarter, recording a staggering $3.52 billion in revenue with $320 million in earnings. Both numbers were substantially higher than analyst expectations. The same quarter a year ago produced $2.01 billion in revenue and $61 million in earnings. The company reported selling over 6.1 million iPods last fiscal quarter, which ended 25-Jun-05. Apple also sold nearly 1.2 million Macintosh computers, a 35-percent increase over a year ago.

Two interesting side facts: gross margins are up from around 28 percent to nearly 30 percent, which is magnificent in a commodity market in which all competitors are seeing shrinking margins. The second is that international sales were 39 percent of revenue. In its SEC filings, Apple broke out sales, showing 495,000 laptops sold and 687,000 desktops. Retail sales accounted for 144,000 computers and $555 million in computer sales (not including other items). The company expects to produce similar revenue and earnings next quarter. Apple now has $7.5 billion in cash and short-term investments on hand, and about $7 billion in assets when considering all assets less all liabilities. [GF]

Somewhere in Cupertino, someone is rolling around in a big pile of money and laughing like a comic book villain on nitrous oxide. Apple earned $430 million on $3.68 billion in revenue, marking the highest quarterly revenue and profit in the company's 29-year history. Compared to the same quarter a year ago, Apple quadrupled its profit.

For the quarter, Apple's operating margin was a healthy 28.1 percent (up from 27 percent a year ago), and 40 percent of the company's revenue came from outside the United States. The quarter also concludes a great year for the company, marked by 68 percent revenue growth and a 384 percent increase in net profit year-over-year. Apple pulled in $13.93 billion during fiscal 2005, from which it squeezed $1.335 billion in profit.

What's fueling Apple's windfall? In a word, iPods. To be sure, the company managed to shuffle 1.2 million Macintosh computers out the door (split nearly evenly between desktop and portables, with 602,000 and 634,000 Macs of each type sold, respectively), a highly respectable increase of 48 percent year-over-year. And the company generated $590 million in revenue from things like the peripherals and non-computer hardware, software like the iLife application bundle and Mac OS X, and .Mac memberships, etc.

However, these traditional activities of Apple, a computer company, are being rapidly overshadowed by its music business, which now accounts for over 40 percent of the company's revenue. Apple shipped 6.45 million iPods during the last three months and pulled in another $265 million from other music offerings like the iTunes Music Store. (And it's a good bet that some of the money accounted for separately as hardware and peripherals are, in fact, iPod-related: speakers, lanyards, batteries, adapters... and, fer gosh sake, socks.)

Does Apple think the ball is going to stop rolling? Nope: for its first quarter of 2006 - which includes the end-of-year holiday buying season - Apple is anticipating revenues of around $4.7 billion.

Well, it's official: Apple is no longer a computer company.

Apple posted its first quarter 2006 financial results last week, with revenue of $5.75 billion and a profit of $565 million for the quarter. The results are a 65 percent increase in revenue over the same quarter a year ago, although the company's gross margin was down to 27.2 percent from 28.5 percent a year ago. International sales accounted for 40 percent of the quarter's revenue. The results are the highest quarterly earnings and revenue in the company's history.

To be sure, Apple still makes Macs. The company shipped more than 1.2 million Macintosh computers, basically flat with Mac shipments during the fourth quarter of 2005, but a 20 percent improvement over the same quarter a year ago. Why the static quarter-to-quarter sales figures? Sales in the Americas and among portables were particularly weak, due to an aging notebook product line and the public knowledge that Apple is transitioning from PowerPC to Intel processors, no doubt causing some customers to defer purchases until details of new Intel-based products became available. (In case you missed it, Apple just announced Intel-powered iMacs and MacBook Pro portables at Macworld San Francisco.)

However, in revenue terms, the iPod success story is still unfolding. The company sold more than 14 million iPods during its first fiscal quarter amounting to $2.9 billion in revenue. This figure is significant because roughly half of Apple's quarterly revenue came from iPod sales alone. Roll in money from other music products and services (e.g., the iTunes Music Store, etc.) and Apple's iPod and music businesses accounted for roughly 60 percent of Apple's revenue for the quarter. The quarter marks the first time Apple's non-computer business has out-earned the company's desktop, notebook, software, peripherals and services offerings.

Looking forward, Apple says it expects second quarter revenue to be around $4.3 billion, a conservative figure which sent Apple's share price into a bit of an after-market tumble. The reasons for a cautious revenue figure include a possible slowdown in iPod sales after the holiday buying season, and a pause in Macintosh sales prior to the introduction of Intel-based models. Some analysts are also cautioning the company may not want to become too reliant on income from the turbulent digital music player market.

Apple sold 1.1 million Macintosh computers and 8.5 million iPods during the quarter ending 01-Apr-06, compared to 1.07 million Macs and 5.3 million iPods one year ago. That translated to revenue of $4.36 billion and a net quarterly profit of $410 million. Apple's haul for the first financial quarter of 2006 broke company records with a $565 million profit, which included the holiday buying season. In a press release, Jobs boasted that the company has "generated over $10 billion in revenue and almost $1 billion in earnings in the first half of fiscal 2006" and cited success in the transition to Intel processors as well as strong online music sales. Shipping a record 1.61 million Macs helped Apple achieve stellar financial results for the fourth quarter of the company's fiscal year 2006, which ended 30-Sep-06. Apple announced that it posted a net profit of $546 million on revenue of $4.84 billion for the quarter, compared to a net profit of $430 million on revenue of $3.68 billion in the corresponding quarter a year ago.

Key to these numbers were shipments of 1,610,000 Macintosh computers and 8,729,000 iPods during the quarter, which the company says represents a 30-percent increase in Macintosh sales and 35 percent growth in iPod sales from the same quarter a year ago. In a press release, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said, "This strong quarter caps an extraordinary year for Apple. Selling more than 39 million iPods and 5.3 million Macs while performing an incredibly complex architecture transition is something we are all very proud of."

Apple finishes its fiscal year with over $10 billion in cash. CFO Peter Oppenheimer says the company expects revenue of between $6 billion and $6.2 billion for the first quarter of fiscal year 2007, which ends on 31-Dec-06. Apple's announcement added a warning that the results might be subject to significant adjustment "as a result of a likely restatement of historical results," due to the current investigation of Apple's stock option practices (see "Apple Reports on Options Backdating Problems," 09-Oct-06). This adjustment could result in anywhere from tens to hundreds of millions of dollars of retroactively lower earnings, but would require little cash expenditure unless irregularities beyond the scope reported by Apple from its internal investigation appear.
