Cleaning Windows

Cleaning Windows -- Last issue in NetBITS Updates, we expressed confusion that no one writing about Microsoft's attempts to offer versions of its Windows 95 operating system without Internet Explorer mentioned that the original Windows 95 system was still in use on tens of millions of machines. But Rob Hagopian <hagopiar@vuser.vu.union.edu> pointed out an extremely valid reason why the original release isn't worthwhile:

<http://db.netbits.net/article/04617>

The old version of Windows 95 does not run correctly on machines built with the latest PC chipsets (from Intel, primarily). In addition to the lack of USB (Universal Serial Bus) support in the older versions, some incompatibilities have been noted with the TX chipset and older versions of Windows 95. Just as older system software for the Mac may not run on newer computers, running the previous version of Windows 95 on new machines is not a good thing.
Why Microsoft can't remove Internet Explorer and leave in the 2 DLLs is another issue.
