The Beyond region has big beautiful lakes, large rivers, small beautiful mountain lakes, rushing mountain streams and wonderful fishing.

Fishing Licenses are usually available from cafés near the fishing areas. For more information, some contact numbers are given below.

The Alpes-Maritimes (06) has hundreds of mountain streams and rivers stocked with trout. The river trout-fishing season is from March until the third Sunday in September (1997: Sat 8 Mar to Sun 21 Sept). Fishing season for the high-mountain lakes begins the first Saturday in July. All of the stock trout comes from the trout farms (centre de pisciculture) at Roquebillière (map C5). The Alpes-Maritimes will have night carp fishing in 1997 at the Lac du Broc. This will be a "no-kill" type of fishing, where the carp must be thrown back in after being caught.

The Vaucluse (84) fishing season is probably about the same as for the Alpes-Maritimes (1997 opening: Sat 8 Mar). The department has several rivers that are excellent for trout fishing, including:

Located at the northeastern edge of the Var, between Grasse and Fayence, about 10 km of lake stretches out through the hills.
Lac de Castillon
This lake stretches about 15 km, from St. André-les-Alpes in the north to the southern end only a few km above Castellane.
Lac de Serre-Ponçon
This lake is formed by a dam (the Barrage de Serre-Ponçon) on the Durance river, at the northern edge of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the southern edge of the Haute-Alpes.
