photo Riding stables for horse rental and guided horseback trips can be found throughout the backcountry Beyond the Riviera. They're not all in towns and villages, either; you will also find them along the roads and in tiny hamlets. There is one, for example, at the Col de Vence, about a half-hour's drive from the coast.

Riding clubs or stables are called Centres Equestres or Clubs Hippiques. Many of the stables are of a Western (American Cowboy) motif, a natural when you consider that they are often run by people who love horses.

Here is our first real list (below). The information is from publicized lists, posters, ads, etc. We don't have direct information yet (we are not active riders), but will be visiting as many of these (and other) places as we can.

Centre Equestre des Orres. Embrun is at the northeast end of the Lac de Serre-Ponçon, and Les Orres is 12k southeast of Embrun, on the D5401 that winds up past the village of Baratier.
Saint Véran (05)
Saint Véran is at the end of the (D5) road, 17 km southeast of Château Queyras, itself 17 km northeast of Guillestre on the D902. Saint Véran is also the highest village in France, at 2040 m altitude.

Centre Equestre d'Annot, open on weekends.
Casterino (06) (Tende)
The Centre Equestre de Vievola has mountain horses and guides for riding trips in the mountains of Mercantour and Marguareis, on the French and Italian sides of the border. Casterino is on the D6 road about 15 km northwest of St-Dalmas (which is 4 km south of Tende). You can drive up, or take the Nice-Cuneo train as far as St. Dalmas.

There are several stables here on the edge of the Luberon.
Col de Vence (06)
The Western-style "El Bronco" ranch has been here for years, providing rides through the hills with some nice views of the Mediterranean far below. There are also pony rides for the smaller people.
