Carnegie Mellon develops Java programming tools
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science have developed two new tools to help computer programmers select from among thousands of options within the application programming interfaces (APIs) that are used to write applications in Java, today's most popular programming language. The tools -- Jadeite (www.cs.cmu.edu/~jadeite) and Apatite (www.cs.cmu.edu/~apatite) -- take advantage of human-centered design techniques to significantly reduce the time and guesswork associated with finding the right classes and methods of APIs. APIs are standardized methods that a Java program uses to ask the computer's operating system or another program to do something, such as opening a file or sending an email. Scholars and students who once had to travel to museums or libraries to view collections of historic images can now do so by clicking on their mobile device instead. The Duke University Libraries has launched the DukeMobile, an university digital image collection specifically formatted for an iPhone or iPod touch. It includes thousands of photos and other artifacts that range from early beer advertisements to materials on San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury scene in the 1960s. Primera Technology has partnered with Imagine Products to offer support for Imagine's award-winning ShotPut Pro software. Primera and Imagine recently introduced their combined solution at NAB 2009 in Las Vegas. The products are now shipping. Video professionals can now streamline their workflow and automatically archive content onto write-once DVD and Blu-ray Disc media using Imagine's software and a Primera Bravo-Series Disc Publisher. The entire offloading and archival process is automatic and hands-free, says Mark Strobel, Primera's vice president of sales and marketing. Freeverse to publish new games from On the Rocks Productions
Freeverse, a developer and publisher of games for the iPhone and iPod touch, will be publishing two titles from Icelandic developer, On The Rocks Productions: Thor and Legion of Amon. Thor brings the son of Odin on a quest to save the world with his legendary hammer, tossed from Valhalla and into the player's hands. Smart Loops has released three new SL MultiTracks drum loop libraries in ACID WAV format for use with Mac and PC software samplers and audio software.
