When ACLs are in use, copying files from an Xsan volume with native extended attributes enabled, to an Xsan volume without native extended attributes enabled, can result in the creation of AppleDouble files that do not have the intended ACLs. Apple has used Infineon baseband chipsets in all its iPhone models as well as the current iPad. A new report from China's Commercial Times (Google translation), however, suggests Apple will drop Infineon in favor of Qualcomm for the fifth-generation iPhone hardware.

Intel has tried to get a piece of the iPhone pie since the device was released, suggesting that its Atom platform was better suited for smartphones than ARM. However, Apple has traditionally favored its own...

I've been following actor, all around wit, and Apple enthusiast Stephen Fry's career since I saw him play the wonderfully droll and brilliant butler, Jeeves in the English TV series Jeeves and Wooster back in the early 90's. Hugh Laurie, probably better known as Dr. House, played Bertie Wooster over the four seasons of tales from the P.G. Wodehouse's books. Since (and before) then he's done an amazing amount of work, from appearing in V for Vendetta to narrating the English versions of the Harry Potter Audiobooks books.

Super Mario Bros. Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary

Super Mario Bros. was released in Japan 25 years ago today on the Famicom, the Japanese version of what Americans call the Nintendo Entertainment System. Since then, Mario has become one of the most iconic characters and entertainment brands in the world. Mario had previously appeared in the arcade games Donkey Kong and Mario Bros., but it was Super Mario Bros. that propelled the Italian plumber to icon status and contributed significantly to making video games commonplace in homes around the world and reversing the video game crash of the early 80s.The game was bundled with the Nintendo Entertainment System in the U.S., and its tough to say whether it was successful because of the NES or vice versa, but either way, Super Mario Bros. has sold more than 40 million copies over the past 25 years. In fact, it was the best-selling video game of all time until just recently. That title now belongs to Wii Sports, the game bundled with the Nintendo Wii.To celebrate the 25th Anniversary,...

Apple spawns new accessory line: nano watch straps

The success of the iPods, iPhone and iPad have been a boon for Apple and accessory makers. Shortly after each product's introduction, a small but highly competitive cottage industry of cases, sleeves, stands and so on emerges. Now, the new iPod nano's unique design has many manufacturers thinking the same thing: wristwatch.

The nano is small, light, square-ish and features a touch screen. When popped into a strap accessory like the Linq by Incipio, it looks good! The Linq will be available in five colors when released (grey, black, pink, blue and white), though a release date and pricing information are unavailable as of this writing.

Intel as expected used its Developer Forum keynote to detail Sandy Bridge, the architecture behind what Intel now calls its second generation of Core chips. The change and other optimizations should give it performance much closer to dedicated video and may finally make it suitable for regular gaming....

In a note to his clients, the analyst Um says, "Sales of traditional notebooks appear to be feeling pressure from the iPad, causing a scramble by vendors to launch iPad-like tablets. We believe that a majority of this impact is occurring on the lower end of PC sales as the iPad is priced close enough to this range that it becomes attractive to consumers looking to make purchases within this segment."

Um goes on to say, "We are not sold that the iPad is purely cannibalizing PC sales, as the functionality of the iPad cannot yet deliver the functionality...

Getting Non-Apple video formats into Spotlight

The availability of software like Perian and Flip4Mac that make non-Apple video formats available to QuickTime and players like VLC and MPlayer means that many of us have files in formats like Flash and Windows Media Video that Mac OS X's Spotlight metadata subsystem recognizes as 'Movies' but for which it cannot determine video-specific metadata like dimensions, codecs, duration, and bitrate. It is possible to fix this in Leopard by duplicating and modifying a piece of the base OS, but in Snow Leopard it takes a bit more effort.

(This hint is also useful for 10.5 and probably 10.4, but 10.6 adds a special twist.)
Spotlight indexing relies on software components called 'metadata importers' to get format-specific details about various file types, which are packaged...

I love the new feature of iTunes 10 to use album art as a mini-player (if you click on the album art preview in the bottom left, the album art that pops up now has hover controls to change tracks); but what if you want this to always be visible when working in other applications?

In iTunes, go to Preferences » Advanced and check the box 'Keep movie window on top of all other windows.' Now the album art controller will always be visible. I like to make it super small and tuck it into a corner. Works great!

Precise calibration in the Calibration Assistant

You can use the arrow keys to set the sliders in the Calibration Assistant precisely.
When custom-calibrating your display using Mac OS X's Calibration Assistant (the application that comes up when you click 'Calibrate' on the Color tab of the Displays preference pane), most of the work is in determining your display's native response curves, which you do by setting two sliders (one one-dimensional, the other two-dimensional) until an Apple logo is invisible against a striped background. [crarko adds: Note that 'Expert Mode' needs to be checked in the first screen of the Calibration Assistant for this hint to work.]

There is an alternative: Use the arrow keys. Even with full keyboard access off, you still get keyboard...

Fifth-gen iPhone may swap Infineon baseband chip for...

The fifth-generation iPhone may forgo an Infineon baseband chip in favor of one from Qualcomm, according to an unconfirmed report.

Per the Commercial Times report, Infineon will not provide the baseband chip for the fifth-generation iPhone. Infineon’s wireless unit was sold to Intel for US$1.4 billion in August.

According to the report, the next-generation Apple smartphone, which is expected next year, will still be manufactured by the Hon Hai Group and Foxconn, and will include a Qualcomm baseband chip this time around.

A move away from Infineon would break with precedent. Infineon has supplied Apple with the baseband chip for the iPad 3G and...

Review: fourth-generation iPod shuffle

While the new iPod touch stole the show during Apple's recent marketing event, the company also introduced its latest overhaul of the entry-level iPod shuffle. In theory, it's the best of two worlds: it combines the simple button controls of the second-generation iPod with the VoiceOver that made playlists and podcasts possible on the third. In our full review, we'll determine if Apple has addressed the issues that frustrated owners of earlier shuffles....

Amazon leaks Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 release...

This may not have been the way Microsoft would have chosen to announce its Office for Mac 2011 launch date, but it worked.

Per Macworld, Microsoft will launch the next version of Office for the Mac in just under six weeks, according to Amazon.com.

The Seattle-based online retailer listed Office for Mac 2011’s availability date as October 26th for all versions of the upcoming suite.

Previously, Microsoft had only promised to ship the newest version of Office before the end of October.

Amazon did not display prices for the two new editions, Home and Student 2011 and Home and Business 2011. Each will come in two configurations, a one-license package and a multi-license version.

Last month, Microsoft set the prices...

The HDR race continues as TrueHDR gets updated

We've been keeping a close eye on the race for the best HDR (high dynamic range) photo app for the iPhone. In my latest survey, I advised that progress would be fast as paid apps move to compete with the free Apple HDR software, and that's what's happened.

TrueHDR, a US$1.99 app, has been updated to add a fast Autocapture mode and a SemiAuto mode (where you can drag the exposure control points around to get the best picture).

I thought it was worth another quick look in order to see how the updated TrueHDR compares to Pro HDR ($1.99) and the built-in iPhone 4 camera (with and without the HDR processing).

TUAW's Daily App: HYBRID 2: Saga of Nostalgia

Gamevil's new action RPG HYBRID 2 is an excellent game, but it's not one that I would recommend for just anyone to pick up. We've spotlighted plenty of great casual games and apps here on the Daily App, but HYBRID 2 doesn't fit in that category. If you've never played a Japanese-style action RPG, you'll probably get lost right away. There is a pretty solid tutorial for the combos, but soon after that, the game quickly falls into the kinds of tropes that only someone who loves old school RPGs can deal with; there's a convoluted plot in which the world has to be saved from a supernatural threat (again), jerky controls with lots of stats to oversee and upgrade, and even lots of typos and some Engrish in the menus.

Don't get me wrong -- HYBRID 2 is actually a lot of fun. If you've...

Reviews: Third-generation Kindle

Design

Amazon has continued to shave weight from the Kindle, bringing the latest model down to just 8.5 oz. Although the third generation is only 1.7 oz lighter than the first- and second-generation offerings, the savings becomes noticeable through an extended reading session. Weight is one of the selling points that differentiates e-book readers from tablets, such as ......

Seven Important Social Media Trends For The Next Year

Social media changes from month to month. Trends come and go quicker than the seasons change. The latest trendy site could be next years Myspace and the hottest new site probably hasnt even been conceived yet or is at the couple of guys in a garage stage. Rather than focusing in on the finer detail I have compiled the list below in broader terms with all the main players represented. All in all it should be an exiting year ahead in social media and these should be seven of the main trends

Jailbreak PS3 with iPhone or iPod Touch

We previously posted an entire guide on how to Jailbreak the PlayStation 3 with an Android Phone and also that iPhone Dev-Team member MuscleNerd confirmed that the hack would soon be coming to iPhones. Well guess what, it’s here folks! The PSGroove / PSFreedom has been ported over to jailbroken iPhones but the interesting thing is that it is not by the same team which MuscleNerd talked about. It’s actually by a hacker who goes by the name of NTAuthority! and he has used OpeniBoot method which was previously used to port Android on iPhone 2G, 3G and iPod touch.

Android 2.x now on 70 percent of all active Androids

Time to get down and boogie if you think the Android fragmentation issue is overblown. Google has dropped its latest platform version stats and Android 2.2, aka Froyo, has managed to corner a healthy 28.7 percent of all active Googlephones (those that accessed the Market within the two weeks leading up to September 1), rapidly closing the gap on version 2.1 and nearly matching in number the handsets still stuck on the Cupcake or Donut diet. When you consider that back in May those pesky 1.5 and 1.6 versions were on a whopping 62 percent of Android mobiles, you'll probably agree that phone makers seem to be getting their act together in terms of delivering Google's latest wares in a timely fashion. Who'd have thought it, the more practice they have, the better they're getting at their jobs!Continue reading Android 2.x now on 70 percent of all active AndroidsAndroid 2.x now on 70 percent of all active Androids originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 12 Sep 2010 07:31:00 EDT. What happens when you leave a skateboard and a tank...

You get all-terrain vehicle babies, is what. Ben Gulak, the youngster that brought us the Uno electric unicycle, is back with a new transportation device, this time aiming to woo military procurement types with a rugged and extremely versatile one-man transporter. The DTV (Dual Tracked Vehicle) Shredder has enough torque to tow an SUV, but is also flexible enough to turn within a circle of four feet and scale slopes as steep as 40 degrees. To be honest, though, nothing we say can do justice to just how badass this thing really is, you'll want to see the videos after the break for that. Our favorite part? The Shredder can be remotely operated and its makers even advertise its ability to carry offensive weaponry and serve as a "robot attack platform." What self-respecting supervillain wouldn't want an army of those?Continue reading What happens when you leave a skateboard and a tank alone in a dimly lit room? Sony's typically the equal-opportunity offender, poking fun at everything from Wii to iPhone, but the company's latest marketing campaign is unmistakably aimed at Microsoft's motion-sensing peripheral. Head on over to www.yaybuttons.com to interact with a two-dimensional PlayStation Move, which will pop out a series of quotes from Kevin Butler -- Sony's fictional VP of Realistic Movements -- explaining Sony's tactile advantages over Microsoft's Kinect. While members of the Sony Defense Force will surely eat this up in spades, the rest of us will simply enjoy this latest tussle, and go back to waiting for both companies to put their money by their oral socket and make more games worth playing.Sony launches anti-Kinect attack website, yaybuttons.com originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 12 Sep 2010 04:08:00 EDT. Hacker Teaches iPhone Forensics To Police

Ponca City, We love you writes "The Mercury News reports that former hacker Jonathan Zdziarski has been tapped by law-enforcement agencies nationwide to teach them just how much information is stored in iPhones — and how to get it. 'These devices are people's companions today,' says Zdziarski. 'They're not mobile phones anymore. They organize people's lives. And if you're doing something criminal, something about it is probably going to go through that phone.' For example, every time an iPhone user closes out of the built-in mapping application, the phone snaps a screenshot and stores it. Savvy law-enforcement agents armed with search warrants can use those snapshots to see if a suspect is lying about whereabouts during a crime."

Acer's dualscreen laptop leaks out with Core i5...

We knew dualscreen laptops were the future after our Toshiba Libretto review, but unfortunately for Toshiba theirs was a future attempted too soon. Acer, however, is apparently testing a rig that might be powerful enough to do the trick -- pictures bequeathed to Tech Review Source purportedly show a 2.67GHz Intel Core i5 processor (likely a Core i5-580M) with dual fifteen-inch multitouch screens, making both the Libretto and MSI's 7-incher look positively dated by comparison. Sadly, the publication's source says this device is "still slow and buggy," so retail availability is probably a long while off, but now you can tell your friends you too saw the future and it looked reasonably good. Peep a couple more shots of the laptop at our source link while you wipe your sweaty palms off.Acer's dualscreen laptop leaks out with Core i5 CPU? originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 11 Sep 2010 23:01:00 EDT.
